About this project
Pirates are cool! Aside from being covetous, rum-swigging, no-rules-having bad-asses, you know what makes them so freakin' awesome? Their flags!
Take the Jolly Roger—one of the most iconic symbols in recent history. It was flown by men and women of fortune to show the world that they would not be ruled—that they were free.
I want to make the same statement. I'm opening a pirate flag screen-printing operation to create personal Jolly Rogers to sell at comic conventions, Renaissance fairs, art shows, and other events.
With the help of scurvy dogs like ye’selves, I'll be able to take my art to a whole new level with the magic of screen-printing. You get a handmade black flag of your own to hoist high, and I get to live free from the shackles of the 9-to-5. Do we have an accord?
Who be the Cap'n?
I'm Xander, a freelance illustrator & graphic designer based in San Francisco, California. I've drawn two weekly web-comics for over 4 years - 6th Circle & The Historically Accurate Adventures of Jack & Voytek, and you can see the rest of my accomplished portfolio here - RedGrimRune. I've been drawing since I could lift a crayon, and I haven't stopped since.
I also happen to have an actual historical pirate in my family's history! Who better to print your black flags than someone who already has the sea in his blood?
I want to give everyone the means to fly their own flag & show the world what you stand for. From coffee to comic books to state pride, there will be a flag to make just about anyone's inner-buccaneer smile. Once this campaign succeeds, I will be armed with all the tools I'll need to make my passion for creativity and pirate-ness come alive!
Each flag is printed by hand in my home/studio/cave right here in San Francisco. While the actual printing process is done by me & my crew, the screens themselves are burned by local screenprinter Rick Kitagawa of Lords of Print.
The flags will measure approx. 20x30" and include 2 brass grommets. Each side of the flags have been reinforced with a buffer stitch to keep fraying to a minimum.
THE JOLLY ROGER LIBRARY:
Here be the "Rogers" so far - Each of the following designs is available as a flag or as a 5x7" print!
In addition to the black flags, here be some buccaneer-inspired art!
UPGRADE! Any and all pledges will be getting this exclusive 4.25x11" print - Crew of Jones no. V. It's printed on high-quality Moab matte paper:
Kickstarter Exclusive! 11x17" Cap'n Barbossa print - "Apple?" signed by Xander Kent.
11x17" Cap'n America signed print by Xander Kent
Kickstarter Exclusive! Blackbeard - The Man From Hell 11x17" signed print by Xander Kent
Kickstarter Exclusive! Joli Rouge 11x17" signed print by Xander Kent
Kickstarter Exclusive: The rocking dead! My friends of The Dread Crew of Oddwood have turned into the undead!
Each map print is a composite of a number of drawings, hand-illustrated by Xander & his Quartermaster (and friend), Kyle Knight, an accomplished amateur cartographer.
The map itself is a chart of the greater San Francisco Bay Area, detailing spots of danger, treasure, and, yes, there be sea monsters out there!
The paper is unique - fibrous & parchment-like, but strong enough to handle being put through a printer.
While each map print will feature similar illustrations, no two maps will be the same! Xander has drawn a small library of monsters, geography & symbols that will embellish every print in a different location with a different icon - making your map unique!
All the info above pertains to the "Map Print" pledge. The "Hand Drawn Map" pledge, of course, will be wildly different, and will be illustrated by hand by Xander Kent.

Risks and challenges
I am no stranger to deadlines - while I, as an artist, tend to set lofty goals for myself, I, and my dedicated crew of loyal miscreants will do all we can, between our prior obligations to work & family, to create, pack & ship all the rewards within the aforementioned delivery times. We have done many events that imposed a hard deadlines on our creative schedules, and we've never disappointed. We don't plan on starting now.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
Approximately 20x30 inches.
For this project, I'm limited by the size of the silk screens themselves. Right now, the largest screens can get my hands on measure 14x18". The image within has to be smaller than that frame, so the "Roger" design tends to measure approx. 11.5x15". Later, once the operation gains sturdier legs, (and I get a larger studio space), I'd be more than happy to print larger flags! I'll keep you posted as this develops.
Yes! At the $350 pledge level, you can submit your own design to be added to the "Jolly Roger Library"
Yes! Once Operation: Crossbones succeeds, I'll be fully-equipped with enough screen-printing supplies that I can start taking custom orders.
There will have to be a minimum of 4+ flags ordered before an order can go through - just so I'm not burning 1 screen for 1 flag. Get one for each band member! Give them to your families! Or, here's an idea - sell them at your shows or on your online store! I'll be doing bulk orders!
Hey, an artist needs his fuel!
The $100 pledge doesn't just buy you a flag, it pays for the silk screen, the burning service & supplies from by friend, Rick Kitagawa, as well as the rolls of black canvas, which needs to be bought in bulk - not to mention the time & skills it takes to draw the design & hand-print each flag individually.
