The Damsel’s Tale pits two players against each other. One player takes on the role of Sir Ivan, a knight tasked with stealing a crown from a fiery cavern. The crown is guarded by the baby dragon Cinder (the other player) and it’s gigantic, ferocious and protective mother. Both the Knight and Dragon players draw a hand of 4 cards. They then simultaneously choose a card to play face down. The cards are revealed and the card with the lowest value resolves first.
The knight player plots Ivan’s path through the lair, trying to stay out of sight, avoid making noise and get to the treasure pile where the crown lies waiting.
Cinder’s player uses their cards to try to prove that there’s an intruder in the cave, to goad the Knight out of hiding and to try to remain calm through the ordeal. Cinders cries will attract the mother dragon out of the cavern depths and into the lair. If Cinder can time it right the Knight will be caught in the open when the mother dragon emerges and he’ll be treated to a toasting!
The 2v1 expansion extends the game to 3 players (we knew you could do the math) and comes with 12 new player cards with actions balanced especially for the format.
Plus an extra reminder card AND another 2 custom printed meeples!
The board features a new track printed on the back side especially for the 2v1 game. The knights will be jostling to race to the crown *quietly* while the dragon has double the chance of picking a knight off when mumma gets to the lair.
Well technically this was a bonus stretch goal but we didn't hear any complaints. A new Dragon and Knight character has been added to the pledge. Each come with a special ability and unique action card.
Thanks to our backers sharing the customs meeples Facebook post 75 times (!!!) we are excited to announce that the custom printed meeples have been unlocked!
Our carrier pigeons have been upgraded. We've taken on all advice, done more research into shipping and will be going with recommended companies.
Shipping is included in your pledge, to pretty much sum it up - free shipping to Europe, continental United States and Australia. We will pay all customs taxes for The Damsel's Tale as well as the shipping for EU backers.
There is a $5AUD surcharge for any other part of the world.
Tinderbox is a town that was born in fire as a part of Red Genie Games' first Kickstarter The Brigade, which successfully funded in 2017.
During the development of The Brigade we were lucky enough to attract the talents of writers Ivan Nevill and Ben Harnwell and artist Antonio 'Nunoh' Diaz of Lagoon Art Studio. Through their imagination and creativity, what started as a fun theme of fantasy firefighting soon blossomed into a rich tapestry of characters, location and backstory – and The Vague World was born.
Tinderbox Tales continues the expansion of the narrative with 'The Damsel's Tale', a short story included with the game that provides more detail into the history and politics of Tinderbox.
We have big plans for The Vague World, having already attracted the talents of many game designers eager to see their creations come to life as a part of this ever expanding fantasy landscape. To be part of the conversation, join us at the Vague World Adventurers Guild on Facebook.
And thank you to our incredible voice talents (thanks for all your help!)...
Risks and challenges
We have learned a LOT from the trials of our first board game project The Brigade which funded in September 2017.
Since then we have heavily researched a brand new manufacturer and have contracted a professional production manager to make sure that the design and quality of the games are up to a standard we can all be proud of.
There are always risks with any project that relies on outsourced manufacturing and fulfillment services but we are committed to providing our backers with the best product we can, no matter what obstacles we may face. We have ensured that any damaged or missing pieces were replaced and will continue to provide the best communication possible.
Part of the delays from our first Kickstarter project was artwork and production, both of which we are prepared for much better this time.
Thanks for reading our whole Kickstarter page!
Lots of love,
Ben, Alex, Jill, Nicolas, Ivan, Ben, Paul, Josh and Scott
