'It was filmed using the Redcard'
A normal looking piggy bank and a doll…. is it really?
You can see the twinkling spy camera from one of the eyes of the piggy bank.
What is at the end of the familiar curtain and curtain rod?
Oh no! There is a twinkling lens found in the hole of the curtain rod!
What is that near the window?
Oh, there is a camera lens here too.
Hello everyone! My name is David Lee, the leader of this team
I'm a person who really loves traveling.
Traveling to different countries every year, meeting new people and experiencing new cultures is one of the most precious parts of my life.
But no matter where you travel, no matter what accommodation you go to, one can experience paranoia because of this possible threat…
That's the threat of spy cameras
With the universalization of global travel, traveling became very convenient, and with access to some available services, one has the option to stay in homes at relatively low prices instead of expensive hotels.
But we've heard a lot of news about spy cameras that are found there.
There will be nothing more devastating than having a video somewhere on the internet which forever exposes my personal life, leaving me forever scarred all because of a journey I left for my happiness.
So I made a teamed up with friends in the engineering and designer industry.
I started brainstorming for solutions where one can quickly and easily get away from the threat of spy cameras. Meanwhile, we were hinted by a security expert with 26 years of experience on TV.
While the service for spy camera detectives are available on the market, if you search for portable infrared detectors they use, most of the devices are worth 300 dollars or more. Having these detectives come for a visit is just as expensive and adding this on top of ones travel expenses is definitely not budget friendly and is time consuming.
Using a material called cellophane can be another solution but it is easily crumpled up, making it difficult to carry around.
So we decided to make something more efficient and reasonable, and after a lot of research and effort, we made the Redcard.
With this Redcard, anyone with a cellphone can easily detect the lens of the spy cameras.
1. Let's make it strong!
A regular cellophane is not suitable because it is hard to cut and easily crumpled.
You can bend around all you want with our Redcard.
Cellophane is thinner than paper and can be easily wrinkled up. This makes it inadequate for frequent and long term use. One can use the coating method by pasting cellophane to a see through card but cellophane will start to scratch up and moisture will weaken it, making it impossible for semi- permanent use.
Then a designer who has knowledge of diverse range of materials found a wonderful one.
After testing, Redcard proved that it does not easily wrinkle up or rip because of its thicker attribute. Thickness made it very easy to cut it into the form we originally planned and there was no difference in the performance of the lens detection.
2. Let's make it portable!
It was very important that we made it easy to carry around anywhere. Size too small to cover lenses and flash was not compatible, and too large or too small to cover would reduce portability.
As a result, I thought that the most standardized size that I could carry around anywhere in my cell phone case, wallet, bag, etc. was 54mm x 86mm, the size of my credit card.
When I cut it to the size of a card, the edges were very sharp, leaving my hands with bloody cuts. So we rounded up the edges and left them to a professional to make it safe.
3. All in one
It's really uncomfortable to carry a manual with you on your trip; therefore we thought it was important to provide a clear explanation. Please scan the QR code located on the bottom corner for a clear instructional video to avoid any confusion.
How does it work?
1) Cover both the camera and the flash with a Redcard.
2) Turn on the flash and keep it on while pressing the video mode.
3) Move the camera from various angles on suspicious areas for spy cameras.
4) If you have a small shiny object, it can be a spy camera.
4. You can save the next victim
And I thought again. it could be a way to protect me from illegal spy cameras, but how can I get one step closer to a world without illegal filming?
It has to be cheap first.
If its affordable, a lot of people can use Redcard and find more spy cameras. I thought this would reduce the number of illegal shooters, reduce the frequency of installation, and filming of spy cameras. So the world can be a little safer, right?
We need your help! I will do my best to make the Redcard affordable.
'Principle of the Redcard'
This is similar to the principle of infrared detectors. LED light, which is illuminated using Redcard and cell phone flash, have a wavelength of 600-700nm. The superimposed curved surface of the lens reflects the light of this wavelength back and is displayed in white dots on the mobile phone screen.
'Target amount and sponsorship plan'
Funds from Redcard will also be used as a cost to make the site for prevention of illegal filming and support for victims so that the Redcard will not end up just as a card. It will be used to open programs and projects to prevent illegal filming so that Redcard can spread and change the world. And If this project is successful, our next project will be a web webcam cover for $1.
Risks and challenges
Redcard’s precautions and weakness
1. It is a simple lens detector, not an all-purpose camera detector
It’s not an all-purpose spy camera detector but a simple one.
We believe that it's the easiest way to find a spy camera at a reasonable price.
The Redcard does not have the ability to track down frequencies like some expensive equipment and track where a spy camera is literally located. It's hard to find one with your naked eye, but if you use it the correct way, and flash it with the right angle, one will be able to find the spy camera. (Poke it with a pointed object, such as a hairpin or pen, to see what it is.
2. Writing can be erased
The description and design on the Redcard can’t be erased by hand, but can be easily erased by sharp objects or rough surfaces. This is because the material is smooth and does not have the ability to absorb ink on its own like paper. While the front can be coated to make it more wear-resistant, the coating will reduce transparency and reduce the performance of the product. We will continue our research to find out if there are better alternatives!
3. Do not over bend or fold the card
Redcards are also flexible and recover their original condition quickly, but if one over bend the card to a certain point, the Redcards will not be able to recover its bent sides. We wanted to make this clear just in case someone may be unaware.
4. If you take a closer look, you'll find little scratches
The material itself is strong, and as it is stored and shipped from the factory, which can result in some scratches of its own. But it's almost invisible and will not have any impact on its efficiency. In some cases, however, please contact us to request an exchange if the scratches are very serious.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
