A knitting book and much more
R:E:D: is a book to raise awareness of endangered animals through design.
A knitting book and an educational book.
17 endangered animals from 7 continents highlighted in 33 knitted jumpers, created by 7 designers from Copenhagen, Glasgow, Zürich, Sydney and Kolding.
17 stories of how the animals live, what threatens them and what we can do to help.
Stories, that when told on will course cross generational learning.
By knitting the jumpers, wearing them, telling the stories of the endangered animal, you are already helping the planet... To speak out for those who can not speak out for them selves...
Who are we
We are a core team of three authors writing this book.
Dorte Roermann, Polly Cevallos and Lisa Renner working together with 6 designers. Mentioned below. Further more there will be articles in the book by scientists working on zoology, animal welfare, biodiversity.
33 Knitting patterns is to come. We can now reveal 11 of them here. The rest will be surprises for you on the release day. But we CAN tell that they are great designed jumpers.
17 patterns in child sizes from 1 - 6 year.
18 patterns in teenage / adult sizes from XS - L and some XL.
We have used yarn from Madelinetosh Isager, ITO, Zealana, Önling, Manos del Uruguay, Handspun Hope, Keetle yarn and Purl Soho. And we thank you all for great support.
We have chosen endangered animals from every corner of the world. By using the IUCN Red List Polly Cevallos was able to highlight all the different threats that cause these animals to be in the danger of extinction. The forests being cut down, the global pet trade, bush meat, which is now also a global issue, Chinese medicine and over fishing just to name a few.But there is hope.
The little changes you make every day, can make a huge difference.
In the book you will find Scientific fact along with stories about the animals. The book will give your an possibility to understand the threats that causes extinction of species. And thus this book can also become a tool of cross generational learning. Still we will try to point at the hope: The changes that needs to be made to face a brighter future for the animals and human being.
7 designers from Copenhagen, Glasgow, Zürich, Sydney and Kolding, has among our 17, chosen each their animal to inspire their design. The challenge faced by this animals and their looks, their skin and feathers has been a basis of inspiration in the design proces.
Mea Andresen has created The African Wild dog Jumper (Girl Pover), The Rhino and Chimpanzee(Thumbs up). Laura Locher designed The erect crested Penguin jumper (Eyes and Feathers).
The jumper inspired by the Blue Fin Tuna (Tuna Parade) is designed by Emalie Dam. So are the little Blur Whale jumper (Making Waves). Bruno Kleist figured out the beautiful Beetle jumper design (show me)and has also designed the little Numbat (Find me if you can). Charlotte Kaae is behind the lovely Orange Bellied Parrot designed as a cropped jumper (Wings to Fly). Polly Cevallos is the creator of the the jumper inspired from the Staghorn Coral to come. And Lisa Renner has designed the Pangolin jumper (Sensitive) and the Polar Bear jumper (Polar Sunrise).
In the Book you will find beautiful animal photos, some of them price winning. Photographer Asger Mortensen will be shooting the fashion photos in late May. There will be aquarelle drawings by Lea Hoffmann, who has worked with world maps and animal illustrations for years. For the Kickstarter Campaign we have made posters out of three of Lea beautiful aquarelles. Choose your favorite for a reward. Or if you can not choose grab them all...

If we succeed in this Kickstarter, the book will be launched on September 19th on Fanø International Knitting Festival.
And later in London, Paris, Berlin, Copenhagen, Tokyo and New York. From every book sold after the Kickstarter Campaign, 10$ will be donated to dedicated, specially chosen NGO´s.
The support from the campaign will hopefully ensure the book is printed and in this way help us to speak out for those who can not speak for them selves.
Risks and challenges
This project is not just a knitting book and it is not only a scientific book on endangered species.
So it is important for us to reach out in both the knitting society and the animal wellfare society.
So the challenge is to make this book a valuable knitting book with great patterns for the knitter and an interesting book on endangered species and biodiversity for all those who care about the future of the planet.
We have experienced an tremendous interest for the R:E:D: book project as well amongst knitters as between people, who do not knit but simply care about the planet.
We have a great cooperation with the Yarn companies. Madelinetosh Isager, ITO, Zealana, Önling, Manos del Uruguay. All supported the project with Yarn or valuable knowledge... and the knitting fares as well as the Zoo´s. So we are confident together with our partners and with the help from the supporters of Kickstarter we will get this book out there.
