About this project
$120k Flooding-Mesh Protocol: the Duo can join as a node and also be a Wi-Fi gateway for the whole mesh network. Please check our Update #4 for more information and how to help us & our backers to reach the goal.
- $50K Python Support: we will add a Python interpreter
The Duo is a thumb-size development board designed to simplify the process of building Internet of Things (IoT) products. The Duo provides everything you need—Wi-Fi, BLE and a powerful Cloud backend, all in a compact form factor that makes it ideal for your first prototype, a finished product, and everything in between.
We’re also introducing the RBLink, an expansion board for the Duo that allows you to attach additional sensors and modules without any soldering. You'll have all the tools you need to get your prototype up and running in no time.
Wi-Fi + BLE
The Duo is your Bluetooth gateway to the Internet of Things. It allows you to communicate with your projects both over the web and with your phone, enabling a wide range of cool interactions. Would you like to build a front door lock that can be opened using a phone and whose settings can be changed wirelessly to give access to additional people? Maybe connected lights that turn on as your phone comes in range but can also be controlled when you’re miles away from home? Wi-Fi + BLE also means you can do make your wearable products extra interesting by adding things like beacons and data collection. Oh and robots! Whether you’re in the same room or halfway around the world, the Duo gives you all the connectivity you’ll need to control, interact, monitor, and play with your awesome new creations.
Wi-Fi & BLE Bridge Demo
RedBear Duo connects with eight BLE Peripherals as BLE Central and iPhone via Wi-Fi, background information available on our website.
There are a few things that are important to all connected devices—here are a few details:
Connectivity: How does the Duo communicate with the outside world?
The Duo contains both Wi-Fi and BLE capabilities. This means your project can communicate locally with Bluetooth enabled devices and can also connect to your local Wi-Fi network to interact with anything else on the web. The Duo is built around the Broadcom BCM43438, a Wi-Fi 802.11b/g/n plus Bluetooth 4.1 (Dual Mode) combined chipset. They share the same 2.4GHz antenna and can run at the same time. This gives you the flexibility to utilize the most suitable wireless technology(s) for your project.
Development: How do I program the Duo?
The Duo gives you four development platforms/languages to choose from:
Arduino IDE - The most popular development platform used by makers, it's easy to learn and comes with plenty of references guides.
Particle Web IDE, Dev and CLI - A development platform that allows you to program your Duo online and wirelessly. You can be miles away and still be able to do your tweaking of your Duo.
Broadcom WICED SDK - An advanced development platform where you can do low-level tweaking. With the WICED SDK, Duo can support Classic Bluetooth which you can build audio or streaming data devices. If you have Apple MFi license, you can even develop your Apple HomeKit project with Duo and WICED.
We will also provide sample projects and sample code for both Android and iOS on our website and our GitHub page.
Live Programming Demo
Cloud: What about the Cloud?
Thanks to our partner, Particle, every Duo will come out of the box with built-in Cloud service. With just a few clicks you will be connected to the Cloud seamlessly. Not only that, the Cloud service is FREE for the lifetime of your Duo*. You can push any changes and data via Cloud right from the start.
Add-Ons: How do I use the Duo with modules such as LED lights or sensors?
With the RedBear RBLink you can easily attach modules from the Seeed’s Grove System to your project. No need to pull out your soldering iron--just attach your sensors and actuators with jumper wires to the RBLink and you’re ready to go. Looking to attach your own sensor or peripheral? The Duo is breadboard and solder friendly, so you’re never limited in what you can connect to the web.
We don't work alone. We connect with other IoT companies to bring Maker community together and better user experiences.
BlueKitchen - We are collaborating with BlueKitchen to integrate their BTstack with the Duo.
BTstack is BlueKitchen's implementation of the official Bluetooth stack. It is a dual-mode Bluetooth (BLE + Bluetooth Classic) stack, with small memory footprint and available as ANSI-C source code. BTstack is free for non-commercial use.
Blynk - You will enjoy 50% discount on a single purchase of Blynk paid services when they're live.
Blynk is a the most user-friendly mobile app constructor for the Internet of Your Things, working seamlessly with the Duo. Blynk helps you simply snap together an amazing interface from various widgets, upload the example code to the Duo and enjoy seeing first results in under 5 minutes! It works perfectly for newbie makers and saves tons of time for those who know how to code already.
Particle - You can use all Particle online tools and cloud messaging service with Duo free of charge* for development and prototyping.
The Duo is pin and sketch compatible with Particle's Photon, you could run your existing code with no/little change or simply add in the BLE code if you want BLE functions. In addition, all shields/add-ons for Photon should work with the Duo too.
Particle offers a suite of software tools to help you prototype, scale, and manage your Internet of Things products. These tools make your Duo cloud ready right out of the box.
(* Inclusion of the RedBear Duo in commercial products is not covered by these terms and will require a $2/device fee to Particle unless otherwise negotiated.)
Seeed - Our integration partner on the RBLink board and the creators of the Grove System to keep prototyping quick and solder-less. Seeed will also manufacture all our Duo and RBLink boards.
Seeed is a hardware innovation platform for makers to grow inspirations into differentiating products. Seeed helps makers to productize their ideas/prototypes using their in-house engineering, supply chain management and agile manufacture forces.

You are able to pledge for a variety of combinations of rewards. We'll be delivering a small first batch of rewards in January with the rest to follow one month later. The Duo is already tested and functional and we are confident that the first batch of boards will be ready to ship to backers in January 2016.
If you're interested in getting more of an item, or creating a combination of boards not listed in the rewards section you can make a larger pledge to get additional quantity of items. Simply add the extra corresponding costs to your total pledge amount:
Duo - add $22 each
RBLink - add $11 each
Grove Starter Kit - add $43 each
Early Bird pledges will have priority in terms of delivery. We will try to include all pledged items in one shipment, but the extra pledged items are subject to production availability. If we need to make more than one shipment, we will bear the shipping cost of all additional shipments.
Shipping & DeliveryWe have tried to keep this very simple and affordable. We will ship ANY QUANTITY, ANYWHERE in the world for $5!
That’s right, any quantity!
After the campaign has ended, we will send you a survey form to fill in the delivery and contact information. The shipping address can be different from your billing address.
RedBear or RedBearLab
We are the same team that developed nine IoT boards under the name RedBearLab.
We are changing our name from RedBearLab to RedBear and we will slowly migrate to a new domain redbear.cc.
We’ve decided to go on Kickstarter to help bring RedBear to more makers all over the world. We are also excited about the feedback and activeness of the Kickstarter community.

Risks and challenges
RedBear has been working in the DIY space since 2012 and we have released nine IoT boards to date, so we have experienced a good share of risks and challenges in the past.
For this campaign, we have completed development and have working prototypes in our hands so we are ready for pre-production. When manufacturing, there are always concerns around the production and logistic time frame. However, we have the experience to minimize any controllable hiccups and deal with uncontrollable circumstances. We have over twenty resellers worldwide including Arduino, MakerShed and SparkFun and will use our expertise to deliver the Duo ASAP in excellent condition.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
