Slumbering Oblivion III - H.A.D.E.S. Rising
28mm scale scifi miniatures
Coming off the heels of two successful Kickstarters, Reclusive Phoenix is happy to announce our third project. This is the second project in our Slumbering Oblivion 28mm scale game line and the aim is to produce the human armies to face off against the forces of Cthulhu. The human army is known as H.A.D.E.S. (Human Alliance in Defense of Earth and Sea) and is under the command of the new human alliance called the Aligned Nations of Earth.
For more information on the status of the full game, check out Update #7 here.
TL:DR / The Short Story
We are trying to fund the human army miniatures for our upcoming Slumbering Oblivion 32mm scale tabletop war-game. The initial goal is to fund the creation of a 5 model unit manufactured out of resin. The more funds we raise, the more units and models we will produce and the quicker the game will come to fruition. This is also an EU friendly campaign in the sense that shipping will be fulfilled from US and UK locations which should help cut down on additional taxes and fees for international backers.
Current Funding Goal: $6,000
Also unlocks a free miniature for backers at the $49 early bird level or higher
Next Goal: $7,500
GECS are not the only fighters that battle the hordes of the enemy. By far, the most numerous soldiers are standard humans that make up the infantry.
There are many other models to fund. Here are just some of the units that we hope to fund once the initial funding is reached.
As stated these miniatures are scaled to 28mm. However, even within that scale there is a lot of variation in games that claim to be 28mm. These models are closest to true scale and a standard 6' human is 28mm to the eyeline. Which means GECS being 7'-8' tall will be slightly taller. That's all good and fine but what does that translate to as a miniature? How does it compare to other '28mm' miniature lines? Here is a picture with my miniatures 3D printed so you can get a visual image of their scale.
I do have to stress, the miniatures I printed out for this picture are NOT final quality, far from it. I just printed some out on my FDM printer so I could do a quick scale shot and the printer is not capable of picking up the fine detail that will appear in the final product. The final models will be the normal high quality you have seen in the past and come to expect with my miniatures.
Eisenkern trooper is the property of Dream Forge Games and the Space Marine is the property of Games Workshop. All rights belong to their respective owners. They are only used for comparison purposes.
The other good think about having some rough 3D prints is that they will help with the play testing! Better than cardboard markers anyway :) Now I just need to make a larger game board...
The Longer Version
This Kickstarter is the continuation of a idea that started many years ago which was to bring two of my favorite genres, sci-fi and horror, together as a war-game. And not just any horror setting but the world created by HP Lovecraft in his stories of Cthulhu. There are several great Cthulhu games out but most are set in early 1900's when humans had no serious weapons that could be brought to bear against the minions of Cthulhu.
But what about a near future setting where mankind had powerful weapons and the forces of Cthulhu no longer work in the shadows but have declared open war on humanity? That is the world of Slumbering Oblivion.
The year is 2175 and the war has been raging for almost a century. Humanity is barely hanging on and is split between fortified cities on Earth and colonies on the moon.
In our first Kickstarter we funded many of the miniatures that comprise the Cthulhian army which you can find available now on our site here: https://reclusivephoenix.com/store.
Our second Kickstarter was based on the Slumbering Oblivion world but not directly to the game itself. It was aimed more at the hobbyist, offering a massive Avatar of Cthulhu and a couple of character busts.
This third Kickstarter continues where the first left off. Now we need to fund, H.A.D.E.S., the human army that will face off against the degenerate spawn of Cthulhu.
The initial goal here is to fund the initial squad of 5 GECS (Genetically Engineered Cybernetic Soldiers). However, there are many more designs that can be unlocked once we pass the initial funding goal. How many we get to is entirely dependent on how well the funding goes. But before we get ahead of ourselves lets take a look at what the initial models look like:
I. R. E. = Interdiction and Rapid Engagement Troops
H.A.T.E. = Heavy Armor Tactical Elite
#5 - This will be decided by backers during the Kickstarter. We'll start a poll with options on which model should be part of the initial squad.
Beyond these models there are many more to unlock.
H.A.D.E.S. is comprised of many fighting units but they fall into 4 main categories.
- GECS (Genetically Engineered Cybernetic Soldiers) - These are the elite fighting units of humanity. They are genetically engineered to be at the peak of human performance. They are larger, stronger, and faster than a normal human. They are also equipped with cutting edge battle suits that increase their abilities even further. There are three categories of GECS:
- Infantry - The backbone of the human defense is still the basic human being. What they lack in qualities of the GECS they more than make up for in number. They are by far the most numerous of the human defense forces.
- Warlocks - It was not until the war started that most humans were even aware of Warlocks. In reality they are humans who have harnessed psychic power. And while the name Warlock is really a misnomer as they do not wield magic, the name has stuck with them.
- Robots - There have been many advances in robotics and while true AI has not yet been achieved, autonomous robots are a regular sight on the battlefield. These are used for any number of purposes from hauling cargo to augmenting fighting forces on the ground.
More information on upcoming models will be provided over the course of the Kickstarter. But here is the start of our goals map...
As we get close to reaching a goal another one will appear on the ammo belt curve. There are at least 30 different goals available so let's see how many we can open!
I would not be where I am without a talented team of artists backing me up. The graphics (ie pledge manager, character cards, video, etc.) are done in-house but none of that would be possible without their amazing artwork to drive it. Here are the folks who's art you've seen so far....
Danny Cruz - drawings and concept art
Hector Moran and Alejandro Castiblanco - 3D character models
Greg Semkow - Environmental Art
Below are current pledge levels available. Over the course of the campaign more levels may become available. It all depends on how successful we are. Note: pledges do not include cost of shipping. This will be collected via pledge manager when items are ready to ship.
Tip Jar - For those that just want to put a few dollars in for support and not receive any rewards other than our gratitude!
IRE and HATE - $22 - At this level you can choose one IRE model and one HATE model at the reduced Kickstarter price. Selections will be made at the end of the Kickstarter when the pledge manager goes out to backers. ERP* for the miniatures is $27 so this is a savings of $5 off retail.
*ERP - Estimated Retail Price
HADES Squad (Early Bird)- $49 - At this level you get all five (5) of the initial models unlocked when the project funds at the reduced Kickstarter price. Backers at this level are also eligible for any add-ons or other items unlocked over the course of the campaign. ERP for the miniatures is $66 so this is a savings of $17 off retail. Also includes free Lillaen miniature.
HADES Squad - $54 - At this level you get all five (5) of the initial models unlocked when the project funds at the reduced Kickstarter price. Backers at this level are also eligible for any add-ons or other items unlocked over the course of the campaign. ERP for the miniatures is $66 so this is a savings of $12 off retail. Also includes free Lillaen miniature.
Over the course of the Kickstarter, we hope to unlock additional models and poses. Unlocked models will be added to the section below
IRE Trooper (ERP $12) - any unlocked pose add $10 to pledge
HATE Trooper (ERP $15) - any unlocked pose add $12 to pledge
Lillaen (ERP $12) - add one to your pledge for $10
Shipping will be collected via the pledge manager once the Kickstarter has ended. This is an EU friendly campaign! Shipping is from two locations, one in the United States and the other in the UK. So for all our international backers this should help most of you avoid additional taxes and fees as well as exorbitant shipping costs.
Back with confidence...
For those on the fence about backing due to concerns about this being a small company, I totally get it. I have been where you are now many times on Kickstarter and been burned on several campaigns. So I totally understand fears around either not getting what you backed, it taking months or years to actually receive it or long periods of silence post funding. That is why I design my campaigns based on what I KNOW I am capable of delivering. This means very specific goals and not a whole lot of fluff. I'll offer freebies where I can but not to the detriment of the overall project. My goal is to always under promise and over deliver. This may not result in tons of freebies or a super exciting Kickstarter but at the end of the day you are going to get what you backed. And you don't have to take just my word for it now that I have two previous Kickstarters under my belt. Both were funded and quickly fulfilled with updates on a weekly basis. As stated in my video, this is the next stage in bringing the Slumbering Oblivion war game to life. After this its the rules and game complete! So if you back, you can back with confidence. Hopefully my previous successes have helped earn your trust. Here is a visual guideline that might help:
Risks and challenges
The primary risks would be a loss or change of an artist or vendor I currently use. However, this is quite low as the artists and casters I use are all established and I've worked with several years and have a great relationship with them. Should the worst happen though, I do have backup contacts I could use if it becomes necessary.
Another risk is to the timing of delivery. The level of this risk will vary depending on the success achieved by this Kickstarter and how many miniatures will need to be made.
While I've backed many projects and assisted several creators on their projects, the reality is that this is only my third Kickstarter as a Creator. The first two went well and delivered ahead of schedule and I learned quite a bit from them. While I feel that I've covered all my bases their may be something I haven't considered which could impact the project or timelines. If anything does come up then I will be sure to inform everyone as I aim to be as transparent as possible and keep everyone up-to-date. I feel this risk is slim but nevertheless it needs to be stated.
The stars align, Cthulhu wakes and dominates the world. In this case I will likely be quite mad, curled up fetal and unable to speak without screaming...so you're on your own and all bets are off.
