About this project
Beer Scholar - the first and only study guides for the Certified Cicerone® and Certified Beer Server exams
The Beer Scholar study guides contain everything you need to pass your Cicerone Certification Program exam. The bulk of the study guides contain the material you need to learn in a well-organized and condensed outline format that tracks the Cicerone Certification Program syllabi. In addition, there are sections on what to expect on the tests, how to study effectively, and tips and tricks for ensuring you pass. As you would expect, the Certified Cicerone® (CC) Study Guide is significantly more robust than the Certified Beer Server (CBS) Study Guide and also addresses preparation for the tasting portion of the exam.
I'm raising money on KickStarter because I want to give you much more than just a PDF file of a Word doc. I want to have this Certified Cicerone® study guide professionally formatted and printed, I want to give you flashcards, practice tests for the CC exam, and I want to do all that right now. Going forward, I want to produce free video tutorials, continuously keep the Study Guides up to date, and offer them in more formats. Maybe I'll even commission a flashcard smartphone app if those products prove popular. I'm willing to work cheap for a project I believe in, but it still takes a little investment to get off the ground.

Extras: Flashcards & Practice Tests
The Beer Scholar Flashcards and Practice Tests are great additions to the Study Guides. They'll help you learn the material and test yourself on it. Go into your test with complete confidence because you've memorized the material and even taken several timed practice tests already!
Flashcards: These print-at-home sets of flashcards give you another way to test yourself, memorize the mountain of info you need to learn, and take your studying on the go. The cards include material from all sections of the CBS or CC syllabus, including all the required beer styles. The CBS flashcard set is a smaller subset of the CC flashcard set. I've seen other sets out there, even free ones, but they are typically riddled with errors and were clearly been made by people before they ever took the exams. The Beer Scholar sets have been created by Certified Cicerones® who know what you need to learn.
Practice Tests for the CC Exam: You'll receive three (3) full practice tests. By the time you've taken and graded these, you'll know what you need to brush up on and whether you're ready for the real thing. You'll also get a feel for the timing and exam length. The Beer Scholar Practice Tests contain a mix of questions similar to what you'll see on the real written portion of the Certified Cicerone® exam. They feature multiple choice, fill in the blank, and essay questions, plus an answer key so you can grade yourself. The questions cover all five sections of the CC exam from beer service to styles to pairing.
About the Beer Scholar Study Guides author
Hi there beer geeks and KickStarters! I'm Chris Cohen. I'm a former attorney who is currently working to open a top beer bar in my adopted hometown of San Francisco. I'm a Certified Cicerone®, a Certified BJCP judge, a contributing beer writer for SeriousEat.com, a beer program consultant, and the founder and President of SF's biggest homebrew club, the San Francisco Homebrewers Guild. I was totally confident when I walked into my Certified Cicerone® exam. I applied the same techniques I used to pass the New York state bar exam to passing the CC exam. Now I want to help you crush the Cicerone Certification Program exams, too!
When will you get your study guide?
Are these study guides or the author associated with the Cicerone Certification Program?
I'm lost. What the heck is the Cicerone Certification Program and why should I want to get certified?
The Cicerone Certification Program is to beer what the Sommelier certification process is to wine. The Cicerone certifications are a great way to prove you have a certain level of beer expertise and for those in the beer industry, it shows you're serious about your work. Alternatively, maybe you just want some beer geek bragging rights. Here's an article by Chris Cohen about the various beer certification programs and a very small taste of the advice you'll find in the study guides - Serious Eats: Which Beer Certification Program is Right for You?
As I mentioned in that article: "As you study for the Cicerone tests, you will learn to properly pour beer, select and clean beer glasses, clean tap systems, pair beer and food, plus you'll gather knowledge about beer styles, brewing ingredients, off flavors, and world beer cultures." It's really fun and important stuff to know for us beer geeks!
The Cicerone Certification Program focuses on testing your beer knowledge. They demand a high level of competency to become certified. For that reason, the Cicerone Certification Program's certifications have rapidly become the industry standard and are growing in popularity. To attain your Certified Beer Server certification you'll learn the basics that everyone who loves beer or works in the beer industry should (but definitely doesn't) know. To attain your Certified Cicerone® certification, you really need to be an total expert on everything to do with beer, from styles to service to food pairing.
You should consider purchasing these guides if:
- You're already planning to take the CBS or CC exam.
- You love beer and want to know everything about tasting, pouring, serving, pairing, and styles.
- You are considering entering the beer industry and want to greatly increase your chances of getting a good job.
- You are already in the beer industry and want to raise your game so you get that promotion or can make a career move.
- You want some serious beer geek bragging rights.
- You're a Sommelier and want to expand your skills and get with the beer revolution.
- You love one of the above people!
A huge thanks to everyone who has helped make this happen! If you're going to take a Cicerone exam please pick up a Study guide, if you know beer geeks who may be interested please spread the word by social media!
Extra special thanks to:
Tom Tripp for creating the video.

The members of the SF Homebrewers Guild and the Bay Area beer geek community for continuing to inspire me to dive deeper and learn more about beer.
Risks and challenges
I've personally backed 45 projects on Kickstarter. Nearly all have delivered a cool product more or less on time. I expect to do the same for my backers. I aim to exceed your expectations with these study guides.
The Certified Cicerone Study Guide is 99% complete. If any problems occur, they will likely be complications in printing or shipping. Since backers may currently be studying for the CBS or CC exam, receipt of the study guides is time sensitive. I'll be sure to communicate any significant problems or delays to backers right away.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
Until the Kickstarter is ended and the books are produced and listed for sale elsewhere, the only way to get one is by purchasing one through this KickStarter campaign. They'll likely be more expensive after the Kickstarter ends and they are made available on other websites. Support Beer Scholar and get your Study Guides for the best price!

The online Certified Beer Server exam costs about $80 to take. You can virtually guarantee passage by purchasing and studying the Beer Scholar $10 CBS digital Study Guide ebook. It's a no brainer.
The Certified Cicerone exam costs nearly $400 to take. Only 1 of 3 people pass the test. That's just crazy, don't be one of the many who flunk. As someone who's interested in beer, you probably read about it, but good luck getting through the long list of books the Cicerone Certification Program suggests you read in preparation for the CC exam. The Beer Scholar CC Study Guide organizes and condenses all that info into a single comprehensive book. In addition, you'll get tons of info on what to expect on the test plus tips and tricks for passing. Walk into the test with total confidence and crush it. It's a no brainer.
The craft beer industry is exploding, get on board! The Cicerone Certification Program's certifications are a great way to prove you're serious about your work in the industry and that you have a certain level of beer expertise. Alternatively, maybe you just want some beer geek bragging rights. Here's an article about the various beer certifications programs and a very small taste of the advice you'll find in the study guides - Serious Eats: Which Beer Certification Program is Right for You (http://drinks.seriouseats.com/2014/01/difference-between-beer-certification-programs-bjcp-beer-judge-cicerone-doemens-beer-sommelier.html)
Among the reasons the Cicerone Certification Program® has been so successful is that they make their exam syllabi public and encourage people to teach to their tests. Most beer certification programs have students take an expensive course and then hand them a certification. The Cicerone Certification Program actually tests your beer knowledge. They demand a high level of competency to become certified. For these reasons the Cicerone Certification Program's certifications have rapidly become the industry standard. and they will only grow in popularity.
The Certified Beer Server study guide is sold only as an ebook. The study guide contains everything you need to know to pass the online CBS exam. The CBS test covers much less material than the Certified Cicerone® test, the CBS study guide contains the set of information you need plus tips specific to the CBS test.
The Certified Cicerone® study guide contains everything you need to know to pass the intense CC exam. The material in this guide is specific to the CC test, from the complete set of information you'll need to know to tips for passing the tasting portion. The Certified Cicerone® Study Guide is the product of years of beer experience and months of work by the author to distill everything you need to know into a single comprehensive guide.

Chris Cohen, the creator of the Beer Scholar study guides for the Cicerone Certification Program exams, is a big fan of Kickstarter and has supported 45 Kickstarter projects to date (check out Chris' Kickstarter profile: https://www.kickstarter.com/profile/rebelscum). Chris is a Certified Cicerone® (the proof! http://cicerone.org/user/66171), but he is not employed by or otherwise associated with the Cicerone Certification Program®. His study guides have been created independently of the program's control, that's why he can provide you with tons of great tips and tricks for how to pass!

You're not the only person to ask about the timing of the delivery of the study guides!
My every intention is to get these out the door by the end of April, like the pledges indicate for their "estimated delivery." I know there are tests happening constantly and that this timing is inconvenient for some of you. I cannot send anyone a pre-publication copy, apologies if you're signed up to take the exam before then.
Here's the longer winded answer:
The books are largely complete. They're being finished up, edited, and the publication details and delivery options are being considered carefully. The goal is to get them out rapidly after the Kickstarter ends, but the experience of having supported 46+ Kickstarters has taught me that it is often the case that people underestimate how long it will take to get final production details worked out and to ship the product. That's why, to be safe, we're saying the material will be out at some point in April.
I absolutely believe I'll get these out the door in April, but I can't absolutely guarantee it. The primary reason is that I have to send them to a publisher and I don't know for sure that they'll be as quick as I want them to be. I haven't yet settled on a printer, but all the ones I am considering are well established professional organizations. Another thing I don't know is whether they will send the books out to you directly or whether they'll have to mail them all to me and then I'll have to repackage and ship them from my home. There are also designers and editors that could potentially slow things down. These are all things I'm working to figure out right now and they could all impact the final arrival date for the guides.
I wish I could give you a totally direct answer, an arrival date. Trust me, I really want to know all this stuff right now, too! Whatever you decide to do, thanks so much for your interest and support!
