Vintage Trailer Studio!
For over a year I have been rebuilding a vintage travel trailer for use as my artist studio. This project is almost complete, but I need your help. Right now it is parked in my driveway, but I need to make it road worthy to travel from Portland, Oregon to Portland, Maine.
I have lived in Portland, Oregon for eight years yet feel that it is time to move back to New England. I miss my family and I am ready for a new adventure. My boyfriend Stuart will also be attending an arts education program in Portland, Maine. This starts in August and we need to move in July. We have saved up for the move, yet the elephant in the room has been the trailer. Is it going or is does it have to be left behind?
I have put so much work into making this space ready to be my creative space that it would be incredibly sad for me to leave it behind. Right now, it needs new tires, a spare, braking system, brakes checked, etc. It has to be safe for travel since the trip is over 3,000 miles. I have come up with three levels of goals for this Kickstarter. Keep in mind that this amount also includes Kickstarter/Amazon fees that I will pay as well as shipping of items.
Kickstarter has made it really easy to donate. You just click on the green "Back This Project" button. On the following screen, just click on your rewards of choice and then it will ask you to sign up. This is really quick and simple. It will then take you to Amazon where the payment will be placed. Really easy! Amazon payment system is very secure! Thanks!
This amount would allow me to finish making the trailer road ready. There are many little things that add up quickly: tires, wheels, spare, brakes, etc.
At this level, the first option would be to have the trailer shipped. This would be the most practical option because both Stuart's Subaru (his vehicle can't pull the trailer unfortunately) and the trailer won't have the stress of the long drive. There is also the option of renting a Uhual and pulling the trailer and driving Stuart's car. Once I get to Maine, I could invest in a vehicle that could pull the trailer.
My ideal goal would be to actually use the trailer to camp in along the trip. To really finish this project, it needs to have a means of getting around. Finding a used truck or v6 vehicle that is capable of towing is essential. We would pack both vehicles with our moving items and ship the rest.
Supreme (I can't believe you guys helped me this much) Goal!
The best way to finish this project is to make it capable of traveling and using as a mobile arts studio. It would be amazing to be able to take it out into the deep woods of Maine and camp in areas that are more relaxing and inspiring. Adding solar power to the trailer would be an incredible way of making this happen.
What needs to be done to make it road worthy:
I need new tires, wheels, a spare, brakes, braking system for vehicle and a sway bar. There is also registration that needs to happen before I can take it on the road.
I have come up with some great rewards for your donations. I would love to repay your generosity with a hand made one of a kind gift. I feel that my strongest gift could be a personalized drawing/painting of something that is near and dear to you personally. I really enjoy using my style to interpret photos that have a meaning to you.
Postcards: With every reward.
Each of the awards will have a Thank You post card sent from Portland, Maine. The print will be inspired by the trip. I also have a blog at www.rebeccashelly.com/blog called Behind the Laurel. I will post photos from the trip and email you when they are up. This is a great way of sharing my adventure with you! If you are interested I can also send you a .pdf of how I rebuilt my trailer.
Vintage Travel Inspired Poster. Reward #2
I have created this poster specifically for the Kickstarter. If you are interested in changing the wording, please contact me personally. It is 8"x10".
Welcome Sign: Reward #3
Have you wanted a personal welcome sign for people when they enter your trailer or home? Do you have specific colors that you would like to match your interior? I can have it say, "Welcome to my Aristocrat!" or "Welcome to my trailer!" Or "Welcome to the ------- Home." These are hand painted on wood.
Vintage Trailer Pillow: Reward #4
These are hand sewn pillows that I created for the Kickstarter. The fabric may be different than what I have shown here. Choose your favorite and least favorite color and I will make one that best fits your needs. Is your trailer red and want me to replicate that? Do you have something special about your trailer that I could embroider on it?
Little Paintings: Reward #5
This trip will be a major inspiration for me. I will be taking many photos and my next body of work will be based off of this trip. I will be making small pieces that will be similar to vintage travel posters. One of the major stops will be Yellowstone National Park. If you have a favorite place to travel along the way, please share it with me. It may inspire us to stop there and see it for ourselves.
Example of a few pieces inspired by my original Portland to Portland trip:
Custom Drawing: Reward #6
Would you like a hand drawn portrait of your trailer, home, family or pet? In the follow up email, please send me a few photos of something you would be interested having a personal drawing of. This is perfect for a wedding present, a gift to a friend or something for your own home/trailer. Here is the style that I would use:
Custom Painting: Reward #7
Here are a few examples of the style that I am interested in using for the commissioned pieces. If you have a vintage trailer, I can also create a painting similar to what I created for this project. In the follow up email, just send me a few photos that you would be interested in having the painting of. I will pick the one that inspires me the most.
Shows during May
While the Kickstarter is live I will have two shows in Portland, Oregon. The sale of the work will go towards this Kickstarter. If you stop by either of these and are interested in a piece, please email me and I will create a specific Kickstarter tab to the right that you can purchase the piece through. If you live in the Portland area, I can deliver the piece as well. The work is at an AMAZING price because I would like to find homes for them before the major move.

Risks and challenges
The biggest risk is not being able to make enough from this Kickstarter to take the trailer. It would be incredibly sad to have to leave it behind.
Safety is the most important part of this journey. The trailer, the truck, everything has to be in proper working order. An accident could happen at any time along the way. If this does happen, it won't hold me back from creating my rewards. I greatly appreciate what people are doing for me. This is a huge challenge to add to an already stressful move, but I feel like it is worth trying.
