It’s the end of summer, and photography school dropout Gab and her friends pay a visit to their town’s infamous “murder mall”. The trio are excited to explore the eerie relics of a time long past, but Gab ends up finding much more.
VALERIE is a story about loneliness, the forgotten space between being a teenager and adulthood, and finding your place in the world.
I began writing VALERIE two years ago, at a time when I was between jobs and not entirely sure of what the future held. I wanted to write a comic about that feeling of being adrift in your 20's, as well as coupling that with the decaying environment of "Dead Malls", abandoned and lonely monuments to the lost glamour of consumerism. Naturally, abandoned places have links to the paranormal, so the idea of having a ghost inhabit this place made sense, as well as ghosts themselves representing feelings of loneliness and being lost.
This trifecta of ideas set the stage for a story about being stuck. Like the glimmering landscapes of malls in the 80's and 90's, childhood has too long passed and as Gab explores the abandoned mall and meets its ghost, Valerie, the two come to terms with their own vices and uncertainties.
Although VALERIE currently exists as a completed webcomic, I had always planned to release it as a physical edition. While the webcomic made VALERIE accessible to everyone, as well as garnering an audience for it, a physical edition that you could hold and actually own never left my mind.
I felt Kickstarting a physical edition would be a good way to cover the cost of production as well as giving people access to exclusive extras, such as postcards and stickers, as well as original sketches. A PDF/digital edition of VALERIE will also be part of the Kickstarter but unlike the webcomic it will contain additional pages of concept, colour scripts, character sketches etc.
SHIPPING: I ship worldwide and will be shipping all rewards via international standard post in order to minimise costs. Please allow 1-2 weeks for your rewards to arrive if you are an international backer/live outside of Europe.
Risks and challenges
As VALERIE is already completed and all bonus content has already been assembled, the main risk lies in securing funding. I am hoping to give people the incentive to support a physical edition of VALERIE by offering perks the webcomic version lacks, as well as a high quality product that backers will receive in a timely manner.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
