DAY 15: My Star Trek Friends Are Joining Our Mission!

Good morning, y’all!

We’ve had two amazing weeks so far, and we’re on the way to reaching our first stretch goal of $5,000,000. But now, we’re getting to the hard part. Together, we met our first goal so fast that a lot of people think this project is already over!

But you know, and I know, that it isn’t true! Our cause matters as much as any project that’s ever been on Kickstarter. Between now and July 2, we still have the chance to help so many more children discover a love of reading.

For over thirty years, I’ve loved sharing stories with children and meeting families. That’s why our pledge rewards already include the chance to attend a few special live storytime events that we’re calling Reading Rainbow Live!

But if you grew up with Reading Rainbow, you might remember that I didn’t read most of the books on the television show: on each episode, a special guest joined me to read a book.

To keep us moving toward our next goal, I’ve enlisted some friends to join us.

READING RAINBOW LIVE… with the cast of Star Trek!

Starting today, at 2 PM PST, we’ll be adding new pledge rewards for four special Reading Rainbow Live! events, where I’d like you and your child to join me and some special guests:

Reading Rainbow Live! is a series of one-time-only events where I’m inviting you to bring your child and join us for a few hours. My friends and I will read from a few children’s books. We’ll all watch a classic episode of Reading Rainbow together, and everyone will go home with some special goodies. And afterward, there will also be a smaller Meet & Greet reception where a small number of families can join us to take photos, sign autographs and talk!

These are going to be truly special events, so I hope you and your child will come out and join us. (And remember, we’ll be reading childrens’ books -- so please use at least one of your three tickets to bring a child along!)

We’ll release tickets in three rounds, starting with a few “Early Bird” discount tickets this afternoon at 2 PM PST. More will be available tomorrow at 11 AM PST, and a final round will be available on Friday at 1 PM PST.

That’s all for now. I’ll see you next time -- and I hope to see you at Reading Rainbow Live!

If you want to help us reach our stretch goal to support more classrooms and platforms, it's easy! Just retweet or share this message on Facebook and Twitter:

Want to help @ReadingRainbow while meeting LeVar & his Star Trek friends at live kids’ book readings? Now you can!

Guy in the green made my day. I watched this a few times just to watch him. I am so excited about this update! I also agree with others, if you could record the readings by the Star Trek cast, I would pay good money to get those recordings. (If you could get Allen Rickman to read a story too and record it, I would die happy. Or just get him to come to my house and read to me every night.Same with Patrick Stewart.)

    2. gail berg on June 12, 2014

Would be very interested in the RRL package(s), but without dates and locations, I cannot commit. :(

    3. Sarah on June 12, 2014

Where will the events be held?

    4. Zan Knox on June 12, 2014

The guy in the green shirt, lol.

    5. Nicky Lopes on June 12, 2014

ATTN Reading Rainbow; Your listing for $750 Steel City Con in Pitt incorrectly talks about Chicago.

Is there any information about who needs a ticket? Do all children need tickets or can the younger ones who don't need a seat (less than one or less than 2 yrs old) get in without one?

    7. Justin Kendall on June 12, 2014

Please tell me Brent Spiner will be reading something to kids with the same look he had in Independance Day! That would rock!

    8. Kaalo Lovett on June 12, 2014

Baby doll female cuts please. If at all possible.

    9. Jessica on June 12, 2014

Regarding the shirts, I'm in favor of unisex. More often than not, the "lady tees" are too short in the shoulders, and the pitiful sleeves always leave our armpits hanging out. While Gillette has a strangle-hold on our self-image, I want more *T* in my t-shirts. I've found unisex t-shirts that are soft enough in print and flexible enough in fabric to stretch for a woman's figure, without creating a spectacle, and without requiring HIS and HERS. I know it's more work on your part, but please?

    10. slot9 on June 11, 2014

I love the reading rainbow live idea!

    11. James Trexler on June 11, 2014

This...may just be the best update yet. Get that guy in the green into a Star Trek series! That expressive face deserves it.
Anyway, every update from this causes me to smile. I start to tear up just thinking of how inspiring it's been to see the positive response to the crusade to instill a love of reading in a new generation. God bless LeVar for his passion and dedication to making this world a better place through the power of literature and imagination. I can thank my mum for instilling me with a love of books, but I'm lucky to have come from a family which would never have let me go without reading. Even so, Reading Rainbow was a treasure growing up. As a young child, I would watch it every summer morning at my grandparents' house. Having graduated from college now, I've gone back to reading for pleasure and am always happy to have a good book in my hands. There's no question, reading can be a life-long passion, and bringing Reading Rainbow back will help so much in growing that passion in a new generation. don't have to take my word for it.

    12. Eric Pescatore on June 11, 2014

I am so proud and pleased to see this, its just amazing seeing people rally behind a cause and something deer to so many people hearts. I had a feeling something like this would happen and i'm so glad it did. I know we will get to that 5 million goal!

Also why hasn't the kick started linked to a face book account yet? the icon is greyed out... i have no idea what the links to facebook accounts do but maybe it will entice more to the cause.

    13. Kevin Roman on June 11, 2014

That guy in the green shirt is awesome

My husband and were raised on Star Trek and Reading Rainbow. We would love to attend these, but we can't afford it. :(
Could you record it and have it available for a more affordable donation. I know other Star Trek and RR fans who would jump at that chance.

    15. Ben Zuo on June 11, 2014

I would LOVE to go! But gotta save the tickets for the kids, they need this more than I want to see stars :)

    16. Michelle K.T. Illg on June 11, 2014

OMG. What an epic update. O_O If only I had a child...!!! Perhaps I could borrow a friend's?!? Does my 'dogter' count, lol? She's very well-behaved and likes books (not to chew on, either!), and would love to meet all of those wonderful people almost as much as I would...;u; Um. Well. I would absolutely totally consider buying a webcam presence at the readings for a smaller pledge if that were at all possible.

    17. Ivan Askwith on June 11, 2014

@Sara & @Sylvia: the Kickstarter page is where the tickets are available! They're offered through new reward packages that start at the $1200 level, or $1700 for the events with the private Meet & Greets!

    20. Sara Thorsten on June 11, 2014

It's 5 after 2pm for do I find these tickets?

    21. Josh "Panda Cub" on June 11, 2014

@Geoff that is a good point.

With that being said I am sure that they could get the waiver granted since this would be for a good cause and it would be a very good PR move on their part to grant the waiver if one is needed.

    22. Cherron Garrett on June 11, 2014

I'd also do another update on Friday, (pay day for many) get people when they have a little extra to spare. That's when I originally donated, and am planning to donate again on Friday, when I get paid!!

    23. Geoff Klein on June 11, 2014

guys, the problem with live streaming or taping has to do with union rules. they would have to get a waiver to do either..

    24. Jennifer Brill on June 11, 2014

Add me to the list of people who would absolutely pay for access to these via an internet livestream, or a digital recording to download! I'd feel awkward going to one in real life since I don't have a kid to take, though.

    25. Elizabeth Deahl on June 11, 2014

i would rather have it as a recording than a live event. this is a special moment i want to have forever

Ritchie Tiongson on June 11, 2014

Wow. They're pulling out the big guns. This ranks up there as one of the awesomest Kickstarter updates of all time. O__O

I'm with the others, I couldn't make a live show/stream but I would love to buy a digital recording/stream of it after the fact.

    30. Geoff Klein on June 11, 2014

who can lend me some money so that i can go to all the days?

    31. Kristin Anderson on June 11, 2014

This makes me both rue and lament how poor I am. Access to an online version of this would be the best thing ever. When I read this I made a sound that even dogs couldn't hear.

    32. schala on June 11, 2014

By the way, I love the shocked fan in the update video. Tell him he's great. :)

    33. schala on June 11, 2014

I too would love to have an option to buy videos of the events! Because of my schedule I probably wouldn't be able to see a live stream, sadly.

    34. Georgeann Muntin on June 11, 2014

I 2nd, 3rd, and 4th the suggestions below to allow a online access version. Or a copy of the sessions recorded. Might make it more uncomfortable for the people paying the larger pledge to be there though. you know want it all... Great perks though makes me cry to see the Star Trek crew come together ONCE AGAIN to save the world!

    35. Karen Brown on June 11, 2014

WOW, now if you can, as others have noted, also have a stream version, or sell the video to these, that'd be another way to earn donations. I can't be there, but I can definitely get the video or livestream, etc.

Elizabeth Surton on June 11, 2014

I would LOVE to be able to buy access to a recorded version of these, too. It would be great to be able to watch at home whenever is convenient for my family, loud and distracted toddlers included.

      Matt on June 11, 2014

I second (thousandth?) the need for a stream/recorded version for backers to pick from. Unless these events are close by, I would be unable to attend the awesomeness :(

Sarah Doebereiner on June 11, 2014

Thank you! So which one is that? That's the one I'd like most to see. ^^ Sorry I'm not sure computer savvy so I may have missed it.

    39. Constance - Chantress of the OO on June 11, 2014

Another request for streaming video! A great way to get more pledges for those of us who can't make it live.

    40. Josh "Panda Cub" on June 11, 2014

@Sarah only episode 4 it seems for Patrick Stewart. Personally I would have liked it if they could get both Patrick and William to do it on the same day as one event.

    41. Missing avatar

Sarah Doebereiner on June 11, 2014

I'd love to go to the Patrick Stewart episode. Will he be at all of them, or only the 4th round tickets?

    42. Josh "Panda Cub" on June 11, 2014

I would pay for a live stream as well :-) perhaps you could offer the live stream to the other events for free to those that pay for tickets to see one of the events in person. those that just want the live stream only could pay for a single stream or a package deal with all of the streams.

    43. Patrick Murphy on June 11, 2014

I'm assuming West coast only? Paid streaming would be smart since I can't fly to CA for this but would love to see it.

    44. Forar on June 11, 2014

Wow, this is amazing! It's great to see so many Star Trek alumni adding their time and efforts to this project in such an amazing way.

    45. Panther Berg on June 11, 2014

I echo many others - I would up my donation if I could have a streaming version of the live shows.

    46. David Yu on June 11, 2014

Wow! Too bad my kids are too young to enjoy this (they need to learn to walk first). But I do think it would totally make sense to have a new tier with access to a stream of the Star Trek Reading Rainbow events. I would absolutely pay for that.

    47. Kathy Wykes on June 11, 2014

I agree with others... would add to my pledge for a live feed of the Star Trek version of Reading Rainbow live!

    48. AquilaSky on June 11, 2014

!!! This is the best thing ever!! Would it be possible for the readings to be streaming online? You could create an add-on that provides special access to watch the event streaming!

    49. Tina Samaniego on June 11, 2014

Well. Looks like I'll have to find a child so I can justify getting this reward. Awesomeness.

    50. Austin Pressley on June 11, 2014

So Deanna Troy and 7 of 9 are going to be in the same room? Shut up and take my money.
