About

Ghost on the Water, began nearly 3 years ago at the tail end of the Standing Rock movement in late 2016, when thousands of indigenous folks descended upon Washington DC to voice their opposition to the Dakota Access Pipeline, just as many thousands more of their brothers and sisters were being violently repressed back in their reservation for protesting its construction.

Although that particular battle was lost, the struggle endured by the Standing Rock Sioux was witnessed worldwide and the larger war against the fossil fuel industries gained many more supporters and momentum than ever before.

Our project will add an important perspective to this conversation by addressing these issues in the context of a history that is inseparable from what has been happening in indigenous communities for hundreds of years, but is only now touching the rest of us.

- The video journalism piece that put us on the road of Ghost on the Water -

As we stand on the threshold of a climate disaster, the erasure of indigenous knowledge and culture carried out more than 500 years ago may yet turn out to be our costliest mistake.

The documentary revisits the narratives of colonization and explore the spiritual roots of environmental justice across America, from Columbus to Standing Rock, while confronting our unsustainable energy paradigm and attempting to rescue indigenous knowledge to help us forge a new one.

How the money will be used

We need your help to cover the costs for upcoming trips to Sioux City, Iowa and New York City where two historic gatherings will take place in the following months and which are to be included in our documentary.

Sioux City, Iowa will be the site of an unprecedented event in this nation. Democratic Presidential candidates including Bernie Sanders, Marianne Williamson, Julian Castro among others will discuss indigenous rights before Native communities in the first ever Native Presidential Forum.

Later this fall, the UN Climate Action Summit will bring together many climate leaders from around the world to New York City in what will likely be the most dramatic climate summit to date, given the increased urgency of the issue, along with a exponentially larger youth climate movement.

We will be covering as much of both events as possible and seeking on-camera interviews with organizers and attendees. Part of this fundraiser will also be used to defray some of the on-site production expenses, but will mostly go towards travel, lodging and food.

Risks and challenges

This fundraiser is meant to cover a very limited portion of this documentary's production. But it is a very important part of it and with your help there's very little that could possibly keep us from our goal of covering these two momentous events.
