About this project

AS OF AUGUST 24, OUR PROJECT IS FUNDED - THANK YOU FROM #rdcHQ! <3

Our Summer Project

The Rural Design Collective (RDC) is teaming up with New Artists Productions (NAP) to create a WordPress website for their inspirational youth theater group! New Artists Productions provides a quality theater program for youth on the rural Oregon coast, presenting them with opportunities that otherwise would not be available if it were not for the vision of Dan and Anita Almich, the program’s founders. New Artists Productions was originally founded in 1999 with a goal of helping young people and youth organizations make audition tapes and CDs. The program blossomed over the years, with over 325 young performers from ages 6 to 19 participating in the program. New Artists Productions has also helped performers pursue their interests post-program through placement in national venues such as Carnegie Hall and national talent competitions as well as providing guidance in college theater recruitment. The Rural Design Collective is honored to help this organization upgrade their web presence to reflect their real-world accomplishments!

How We Will Use The Money

The funds will be used to pay two mentees a summer stipend while they are hard at work building this site for New Artists Productions. If we make more than our goal we will use it to continue to fund our good work into 2012, and will provide our backers with a plan for surplus funds! Point.B Studio is donating their time and facilities. Please note that the group we are working with this year, New Artists Productions, is a 501(c)(3) organization and they have kindly offered rewards that are tax-deductible. There will be a tax deduction (less the material value of the gift) or a full deduction for amount if gift is refused.

We will be building the site during our 2011 Summer Mentoring Program, and sharing what we learn to help other non-profit organizations of this nature benefit from our work. All code that we create will be open-source and our course will be available in its entirety. We need your help to make this the best site it can be!

Our progress will be documented at http://sixes.cc/wordpress-track during the program and amended post-program. Right now, we are having a lot of fun learning about WordPress - and how to use it to build a full-featured website.

Thank you for supporting the Rural Design Collective!

The Rural Design Collective is a not-for-profit professional mentoring program which furthers the education and experience of residents of rural Southern Coastal Oregon who are interested in working with web and/or media technology by involving them in real development projects. We are located in Curry County which is one of the economically poorest in rural Oregon, yet home to many resourceful residents and progressive creative people. We focus on work that advances important social causes  and/or helps make a difference in our local community. We also emphasize an open learning model as well as working with free and open programs and technologies. We release all of our work as open source so anyone can build on it and benefit from it. You can learn more about us at http://ruraldesigncollective.org/

Our 2011 crew is at http://sixes.net/rdcHQ/about/meet-the-rdc/ ... You can also follow us on Twitter! @rdcHQ!
