“Elequa, might hold the key to developing a solution to end the global water crisis.” -
DrinkTap.org / American Water Works Association

“I could readily envision electrocoagulation technology deployed in remote regions of the U.S - or elsewhere around the world, like remote regions of Mexico, where water demands are fairly limited and some form of power is available.” - Les E. Shephard, PH.D - Director at Texas Sustainable Energy Research Institute

“Elequa uses very little energy, is incredibly inexpensive to implement in comparison to other treatment options, can be added as an upgrade to existing water treatment systems and seems to have the opportunity to purify water in a more controlled way.” - Rivard Report

UPDATE:

The attention our Elequa electrocoagulation technology has received this past month has been phenomenal, and we are listening to your feedback. As we reach the halfway point we've decided to add a crucial aspect to our kickstarter one that will resonate with every single water drinking human being. If we reach $60,000 we will install our technology in the small town of Sierra Mojada MX. This community of 1,100 people cannot afford to clean its own water supply which has a high amount of a toxic naturally occurring element known as arsenic. Residents of Sierra Mojada must import water at an inflated price of about $2.50 per jug, with our technology we can reduce the price to $0.15.

At $2.50 per jug the average Sierra Mojada family will have to spend 1/6th of their income to meet the daily requirement of water. The Elequa system can reduce that cost to $0.15.

The Elequa: Sustainable Water Tech Education & Research Project provides an opportunity for backers/donors to fund a collective research and education initiative that will put a new sustainable technology into student's hands, and provide teachers and students resources to educate classrooms about water technology and conservation. When a student is sponsored with an Elequa testing model, they are encouraged to focus on water problems that are of interest to them or their area. Sponsored students will have access to our Elequa team and the other students and data in the research network. If you are a student interested in testing our technology please visit this link.

Elequa Student Testing Model

Students sponsored for the Elequa research network will receive a test system similar to the one pictured.
Students sponsored for the Elequa research network will receive a test system similar to the one pictured.
  • Test systems are capable of testing a wide range of contaminates.

  • Clear reactor for visibility of the electrocoagulation process.

  • Amperage meter and control included.

  • Small and Portable.

How the Technology Works

An Electrocoagulation (EC) reactor works by releasing positive ions which bond pollutant particles and separate them from water, making them easier to remove. When used in combination with other water treatment systems, EC is a powerful and efficient upgrade. When compared to other water treatment processes our technology reduces the energy and chemical inputs, and is low cost and simple to maintain.

What are the potential applications?

  • Solar Powered Disaster Relief Water Purification

  • Purification in Potable Water Treatment Processes

  • Hydraulic Fracking to Reduce Water Contamination and Consumption

  • Cooling System Waste Water Re-Use in Office Buildings, Hospitals, Data Centers

  • Waste Water Treatment Plants

  • Efficiency Upgrade for Existing Water Treatment Systems

Why use this technology?

  • No Chemicals Required

  • Less Water Waste

  • Low Energy input

  • Pollutants can be removed as a solid

  • Simple to upgrade and implement

Hydraulic Fracturing or Fracking Water

Hydraulic fracturing is a process of extracting natural gas and oil from the ground. Fracking in Texas has risen many concerns about it's water consumption and wastewater disposal. Texas drought conditions has water conservation on everyone's mind. The TSERI lab is testing the Elequa system as a treatment option for fracking wastewater. If our technology can increase the amount of water reuse, and produce solid waste as opposed to drainage or re-injection into the ground, there is less likelihood of groundwater contamination, and less water consumed overall.

Arsenic Removal

"Arsenic in drinking water is a global threat to health, affecting more than 70 countries and 137 million people, according to new research."  USA Today

The innovator of the Elequa technology comes from an area of North Central Mexcio which has a problem with high arsenic content in it’s well water. The Elequa system excels in arsenic removal from water. Elequa wants to produce a system for the town of Sierra Mojada, MX which currently cannot drink its own well water due to arsenic and is forced to import brand name water. By implementing an Elequa system we can remove the arsenic content and produce healthy inexpensive water for consumption. The community of Sierra Mojada can go from spending 1/6th of it’s income on water to 1/46th.

Small communities are not the only ones with arsenic problems, these problems can be found in large scale water treatment plants when  arsenic is concentrated in wastewater. The Elequa system has the potential to remove these contaminates as solid waste instead of through drainage where it can then become a strain on the local waste water treatment plant, or have the potential to contaminate another water source.

UTSA TSERI Labs are researching arsenic removal with the Elequa technology and will possibly join in the installation of a system in Sierra Mojada should we acquire the funding to do so.

Reverse Osmosis Concentrate / Wastewater

The current leading water purification technology is reverse osmosis (RO). RO purifies water very very well, but to achieve this, a large amount of water, energy, and chemicals are consumed in the process. Contaminates are microscopic and RO utilizes a brute force method of forcing only the clean water through a complex filtration system which capture all these tiny particles. Clogged particles in the filter are rinsed loose and sent down the drain with a high percentage of water.
The Elequa electrocoagulation technology however makes these minuscule particles bond together and become large enough get caught in much simpler filters. This is a huge change in the way we think about pollutants in water. By focusing more research on this technology we open the door to a high level of efficiency and capability to produce the exact type of water we need.

For now RO is a staple, and isn’t going anywhere. The Elequa systems can actually upgrade current RO systems as a pretreatment to make the  process more efficient and as a post treatment to capture and re-use wastewater.  At the TSERI lab some of our tests are with RO concentrate or waste, to see if we can remove enough solid for possible re-use.
