Hawaii Nights is a project that aims to produce a never seen before professional quality photographic documentary of the night sky in the publicly accessible inhabited islands of Hawaii. We have already produced an interesting collection of nightscapes in Kauai, such as these:
Our goal is to produce a collection that also includes night landscapes of Oahu, Molokai, Lanai, Maui and the Big Island. For about two weeks in the month of June, we'll hike the islands at night to carefully selected vantage points, and work tirelessly from 8pm until 5am to produce this one of a kind book and photographic documentary.
Can quality and novelty be guaranteed?
Rogelio is a world renowned astrophotographer and night photographer He is in fact considered one of the very best and most influential astrophotographers in the world today, having received numerous international awards and prestigious accolades.
Rogelio has extensive experience photographing the night sky, both deep-sky images and landscapes, having produced award-winning nightscapes in Yosemite, Big Sur, Death Valley, Lake Tahoe and many other places. Here's a few of his award winning images:
For many more images to sample Rogelio's work, check his photostream in Flickr or his own website, here.
What are the funds for?
All equipment is already paid for. Since the most popular pledges are the ones that get a copy of the book, we're counting on most of that money going to the production and publishing of the book (if you want quality, independent publishing is not cheap). Any other pledges (digital copy, licensing of images, sponsors) will simply help with the travel expenses. As they say, every bit helps!
Risks and challenges
Our biggest handicap - excluding unpredictable events that could happen to anyone at anytime - is the weather... An overcast night sky means we have to wait until next night. The good news is that, except for some very specific locations, the weather in Hawaii is usually cooperative in this regard. Also, working tirelessly at night for two weeks non-stop can put a toll in your body. Fortunately, this is something we are used to do and in fact enjoy doing.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
