Chess by Pieces is a collection of designs that combines two classics, chess and LEGO® bricks, to make the ultimate coffee table chess set for the LEGO® fan in you.
As a backer, you will receive printer-friendly, easy to follow instructions in PDF format.
You will also receive a detailed parts list, so that you can:
- Build with bricks you already own,
- Buy used bricks online with a few clicks, or
- Ship every brick you need, factory fresh, to your doorstep.
There's a reason that chess has been around for centuries. It's a great game.
In support of chess, check out Brendan's incredible story from the Shut Up & Sit Down podcast;
Everybody loves LEGO®. Some people love LEGO® a lot.
Maybe for you, those little bricks represent the power to turn imagination into reality.
Maybe they represent the pride of successfully building something beautiful and complex.
Maybe you think the little Darth Vader minifigures just look so cute!
If you're like me, LEGO® helped build you.
Whatever your reason, the passion of a LEGO® fan runs deep.
Now, the Chess by Pieces design presents an elegant, sophisticated way to represent your fandom.
All this said;
LEGO® is a trademark of the LEGO Group of companies which does not sponsor, authorize or endorse this project or its creator. All Kickstarter backer support is for design and delivery only.
Ancient tradition inspires each piece.
Make it uniquely yours.
You'll be able to customize your design in any way imaginable. You build it, after all. Here are some ideas for inspiration.
- Use column bricks to add a splash of color! (19+ colors currently available)
- Make your minifigures into kings!
There's no limit to what you can do. Chess by Pieces just gives you a head start.
Since its inception, Chess by Pieces has undergone several renditions. Each piece goes through prototyping and play-testing with real LEGO® bricks to ensure sturdiness and real-world aesthetics. Because I couldn't afford to buy new bricks to fully build every new rendition, these renderings can most accurately show you what each finished design will look like.
Soon after the campaign ends, you’ll get an exclusive backer email containing all the information you need to start building your own Chess by Pieces design!
First, an interactive excel spreadsheet will help you discover which LEGO® bricks you need to build the design. Simply enter in bricks you already own, colors you wish to use, and other customizations, then watch the sheet calculate the rest.
You’ll also get a link to the Rebrickable online parts list for your design, which you can use to purchase quality used LEGO® bricks from multiple, trusted online resellers with ease.
Alternatively, all of the bricks needed to build any Chess by Pieces design are available for custom order directly from the LEGO® factory via LEGO® Pick-a-Brick.
Finally, use the printer-friendly, easy to follow PDF instructions to build your very own set!

You can order all the bricks you need for your Chess by Pieces designs online in under 5 minutes.
As a backer, you will start with an organized list of the specific bricks and colors needed for your design.
For new bricks, visit LEGO® Pick A Brick. There, you can custom order individual LEGO® bricks right from the factory.
Simply copy and paste each brick's Design ID from your parts list into the search, and select colors and quantities.
For used bricks, check out Rebrickable.
Rebrickable is a database of MOCs ("My Own Creations") that analyzes the parts needed for each model and finds the best deals available from huge online used LEGO® marketplaces like BrickLink and BrickOwl.
You'll get a direct link to the Rebrickable page for your design. From there, you can browse the online parts list and the best collections of the bricks you need from BrickLink and BrickOwl sellers.
Once you find a deal you like, you can add it directly to your cart!
Here is an example Rebrickable model by Peter Szabo so that you can see how it works yourself.

How much will bricks cost?
You wouldn't want to just sit and read instructions. You want to build something! Luckily, this is where you get to experience the full value of Chess by Pieces.
Every Chess by Pieces design has been meticulously reviewed and optimized for the perfect balance between price and style.
Only the cheapest, most effective, and readily available bricks made it into the final models.
The price per brick for each design averages at around 13 cents (USD) from Pick A Brick, which rivals many retail LEGO® sets.
Used brick prices from BrickLink and BrickOwl will vary, but are usually even cheaper.
Here are some estimated prices for a full set from Pick A Brick:
- Blitz - about $55 (+ tax and shipping)
- Elo - between $85 and $110, depending on your variation (+tax). Shipping is usually free for orders over $75!
- Stonewall - about $155 (+tax) & free shipping!
Similar high-quality, themed chess sets usually sell for between $100 and $500 USD.
Shipping for Pick A Brick orders usually takes between 1-4 weeks.
Hi! My name is Scott. I started Ray Wave Creative with a mission to channel my obsession with creation into the discipline of business.
What am I about? I could try to write it, or I could show you a picture of my desk.
I want to keep improving on these designs and offering products like this. I couldn't do it without initial backer support and feedback. If you think of anything you want to share, please comment!

Risks and challenges
Occasionally, Pick A Brick will temporarily run out of stock of certain bricks. The Chess by Pieces designs only call for simple, common bricks that are likely to remain stocked.
However, there is a chance that Pick a Brick orders might get delayed if this project really, really blows up. If that happens, it'll just be a signal to the people at LEGO that fans really love things like this!
This is my first Kickstarter project, so I intend to make it a good one.
I see a Kickstarter project as an exercise in building a business, and to build a successful business, you have to deliver extraordinary value. To do this, I've used a lot of time, experience, and research to give Chess by Pieces the most value I can.
Still, I need to earn your trust.
I'm keeping it simple. I don't offer anything I can't deliver. I don't claim anything I can't back.
I had permission from Kickstarter to offer the service of ordering bricks for backers at a higher pledge level. I thought this would be a great reward, offering everything with one click. In the end, that path required transactions that weren't in the best interest of backers, and I respect this process too much to offer you something like that.
I also don't have any stretch goals. I feel like they would only complicate things right out of the gate. If there is enough demand later, I'd love to add something simple and fun.
Finally, thank you for looking over this project! I hope it's earned your interest.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
