A story of survival, loss, strength, courage, endurance and of coming out...of a life lived undercover.
Hi I'm Ray, creative director of Stomp It Out Productions and this Kickstarter is to raise funds for our upcoming documentary film, Undercover.
It's about Richard Bert, a Brooklyn man born and bred. Back in the 80's, Richard was working as an Undercover narcotics officer for New York Police Department. At that time, the crack epidemic was really hitting the city and crime was at an all time high. As an undercover agent, Richard's job was to infiltrate the crime infested underground, and find out where the drugs were coming from. He was really good at his job and managed to get very deep and very close to the source. But the problem with living your life behind a mask is that sooner or later, someone is going to see behind it, and discover who you really are. And that's exactly what happened. but this isn't just the story about Richard's escape and survival from deep undercover, It's also a story about what happened next, it's a story about one mans' journey to find his true self, his true spirit and his true purpose.
Richard is a story telling master and his tale is gripping, heart wrenching and life affirming. When we went to film this documentary with Richard, we ended up getting a lot deeper than we realized we would. It turns out that for Richard, hiding his identity from some drug dealers was nothing compared what he was hiding from the rest of the world, and having a near death experience allowed him to see what was really important in life.
Essentially that's what this film is about. It's about stripping off the masks that we all wear, and finding out who we truly are…and who we truly are destined to be. For Richard, that question took him all over the world and led him to where he is today, helping at risk kids at an after school program in Brooklyn. His passion and his dedication to the kids he works with is amazing and he's doing great things not only for them, but for his community.
This film is very honest, and Richard took a big risk in exposing himself the way he does. It may result in him having to walk away from what is his greatest passion - and from kids that completely idolise him. But for Richard, he knows the importance of truth and the power of the message…and we all feel that his story needs to be shared and this film needs to be seen.
Undercover is almost ready to go, but we need help to bring it to you. Ongoing production costs involve two music licenses, fees for entering into film festivals and marketing. We are looking to you to help us raise $10,000. Let's get Undercover out and into a cinema near you.
There are a bunch of awesome rewards for supporting the film which you can check out down below, including the chance to get your own tour around New York by Richard himself - he will tell you his story in person and you'll be able to visit the actual locations that feature in the film…and trust me. once you've seen this film you'll feel like you've known Richard for years.
Please check out our website at www.undercovermovie.com and follow us on Facebook and Twitter - links down below. Let's honour Richard's bravery by sharing this with as many people as possible! Thank you!
Risks and challenges Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
The great thing about this project is that the film is made and almost ready to go, so now we just hope that people are interested and want to see it! DVD's are always a challenge, because of cost. We hope that we will receive a wide audience and be able to get enough sales to merit a good quality DVD production to provide with all the wonderful people that have ordered a copy via their Kickstarter support.
It's always a challenge to engage an audience, but we feel that Richard is an incredibly engaging character and hope that others feel as passionately about his message as we do!
Prior to this project we have also been working on another film titled,Stomp It Out, and are nearing the end of that project also. We purposely picked rewards that were very manageable for us and that we knew we could handle, on top of the rewards from the previous film which will reach completion around the same time. On top of that, many of the backers from our previous project, Stomp it Out, were friends/family and people from our own charity network. Those people recognized the charity element of the project and many of them didn't want a reward, so our rewards list for that film is actually quite short.
Film distribution is quite an unknown thing; you never know if or when someone is going to pick up the film for distribution and if/when they do, it's all steam ahead. So we are very much at the mercy of interested parties when it comes to larger distribution, but are also prepared to self distribute if this does not work out. This is something that we will have to play by ear depending on interest, but either way, we are on top of our rewards and will be ready to thank our awesome backers from helping us out!
