About the illo Project
illo - birth of the cool is a 3D action puzzle game for iOS and Android platforms. For the first time in the history of his world, a tiny illo is leaving his home, his tree, sucked into a baffling gap in the sky. Designed for players over 7 years old, illo - birth of the cool promises to be a unique gameplay experience - no other game will move you like illo.
Here's a little summary of the game:
illo was born in 2006 and is still growing in scale.
illo is the central character of an original videogame, the only points in common with other videogames is that it has a beginning... and an ending!
illo's environments are unlike anything else on the videogame market.
illo is not violent: it can be played by anyone over 7 years old.
illo requires a touch screen, tilt sensor and microphone – it’s fully interactive!
illo is controlled via touch and microphone and in combination with the "bKg" button, you can interact with different creatures and backgrounds.
illo - birth of the cool was born in the mind of Luca Eliani, an artist and Italy’s premier voice over actor for Disney Studios. If you ever saw Donald Duck speaking Italian that was Luca’s voice you heard! Being surrounded by art and cartoons for years gave Luca a certain perspective of the world, one which is a little more colourful, and little more fun and a little more wonderful.
illo - birth of the cool is a product of that perspective. All the concepts and sketches you will see here have been created by Luca and it was this singular vision which began exciting a lot of people.
He knew that the best vehicle to begin the character’s journey should be on a platform where everyone could access a ‘little bit of cool’ so he looked towards mobile and tablet gaming where people could play illo everywhere at any time and experience a little of what he feels and sees.
Enter, Massimiliano Di Monda. Massi makes videogames you see, in fact, together with Fausto and Francesco at Raylight, they’ve made some very good games. As soon as Massi saw the sketches he realized Luca had something special and unique in the videogame market and so began the development of illo - birth of the cool.
Luca and Massi want illo to be enjoyed by everyone, everywhere. They thought ‘how cool would it be if we could get people to invest in our vision and come on the journey with us’. Kickstarter fitted the bill perfectly.
So, here’s the pitch ladies and gentlemen – we need you to help us raise $270,000 to bring illo to the Apple iPhone, iPad and Android handsets and tablets. Not only will this funding help us develop the game, but also we will promote and launch the final game globally to market. We see illo’s journey as a long one and with you help, we can start now.
We’ll be posting regular updates about the progress of illo as we move forward, posting new video updates, concept art, screens and developer interviews. But we want you as part of the project. Our backers’ only forum is where you’ll give us your ideas and provide feedback to our updates and let us know your thoughts. We can’t promise to answer everyone (we’re only a small team) but we do promise to read everything you pitch to us, your ideas, thoughts and feedback.
We also promise that if we take on one of your ideas, not only will it help us make the game that you want, but we’ll shout it from the roof tops in our video updates! Once the game is nearing completion, we’ll release a Beta test version on a first come, first served basis, but we’ll let you know when that’s coming up. It’ll be at this point that not only will you be investors, but also QA testers and we’ll need all of your feedback before we launch to the waiting world. Then, once the game is perfect – you’ll be getting it first – not any App stores, but you, the backer.

We have created a wide range of backer rewards for peoples budgets but the more you invest, the more you get back and closer we get to our target $270,000 – but it’s up to you, we want you to enjoy backing illo so pledge what you can.
All we ask is for you to look at the concepts and trailer and see what Luca sees. We aim to fully recreate his designs and vision and bring it to market for everyone to enjoy.
illo is an action/puzzle adventure;
illo is unique.
The game is designed to plunge the player into an uncharted territory governed by dynamics that need to be mastered in order to survive and progress. The player witnesses illo's premature awakening in the wrong place, i.e. in an unexplored environment, populated by weird and wonderful creatures and where the sequence of events is neither modular nor foreseeable: a unique wonderland.
illo's appearance is stripped of all visual redundancies that would complicate the game mechanics; in fact, its minimalist ambience is created with colours, animation, very clean design utilizing light and shadows. It is this simplistic visual approach which is one of its core features. illo promises to be unlike any game you have played to date.

Wait! If illo is so cool and unique, why hasn’t a publisher snapped it up?
We’ve pitched it to a number of our publisher partners and while they love the concept and character, they’ve asked for an advanced demo which we cannot produce without any funding. But then Kickstarter came along and we thought ‘what a great platform to get people to invest, share our vision, develop the game and publish illo ourselves' so that's what we decided to do.
Why should I support this project?
Yes, why should you? In life, you should support things which you care about or believe in, not just throwing money at something because you’re ‘told’ to. If the idea of illo moves you, if you think it’s cool and you’d like to play it, then please back us – we want people who want to contribute to the illo idea and the ‘development’ journey we’re embarking on.
Who are you guys, anyway?
Luca Eliani – the Creator of illo
Luca discovered videogames at 7 years old in beautiful Roma, Italy and has been playing ever since. Around that time he remembers drawing, painting and designing his unique ideas for the first time. Luca has made art the focus of his life and his career and he produces it wherever and however possible. He admires art in all its forms and when he is not producing his own unique pieces, he works with Disney Studios bringing their cartoon characters to life. But, he knows that videogames are an equal form of expression and he isn't afraid to say that videogames are the most important art form of the 21st century. As an artist, art lover and videogame fan for over three decades, it was always assumed that sooner or later Luca would develop a game of his own. That's why we’re here. What if you go over your minimum goal?
If we get more money over our minimum goal, it’ll go back into the game where we can look at expanding illo’s universe with more levels and characters and porting the game onto more platforms like XBLA (Kinect), OUYA and Nintendo Wii U.
When will the game be finished?
We’re looking at November 2013 to launch illo to the global market.
How will the game be delivered to me?
Via the App store or individual Android manufacturers app stores and digital downloads.
When will I get the rewards?
Physical rewards will be finalized (designs approved and put into production) between the end of the funding campaign and the game’s delivery date. We’ll try to ensure that all digital content will be sent to every backer as soon as possible after the funding date. In regards to physical rewards, again, we’ll get these to our backers as soon as possible. We’ll let everyone know when to expect them via our updates.
I am located outside the USA – can I pledge?
Of course you can, we live in a global village after all! All you need is an internationally approved credit card in order to be properly processed by Amazon Payment Systems (which is the payment method used at Kickstarter.com). If not, there are other ways you can pledge (like using your PayPal account), but those will only be available once the minimum funding goal is achieved. Therefore, it is very important that all fans push for us to cross the minimum goal as quickly as possible!
I made a pledge – but forgot the shipping costs! What now?
Each reward pledge requires international shipping costs to be added where a physical reward has been detailed (e.g. concept artwork, CD, etc.). We estimate that an average of $15USD should be added . If the campaign is over, you can always send us additional funds via PayPal. Check the illo official website for more detailed info at the end of the campaign.
I already pledged, but changed my mind and want to raise/lower my pledge…can I do that?
Yep! All you have to do is access your account and retype the pledge amount you are willing to commit to. Your commitment is only locked when the campaign ends. So push your fellow illo fans to support us until the very end!
Will the game be available in languages other than English?
illo will be localised in all the major languages.

Risks and challenges
illo - birth of the cool is an original IP and is a unique and complex project, but having Raylight as a partner with their 12 years of developing AAA games for mobile and console, Luca’s vision and the project gaining its full funding, illo on iOS and Android will be launched to market in 12 months’ time.
Once the funding is received, the development process will be in milestone stages (one per month) where we will define internally how the elements of the game are developed and in which order. We’ll be reaching out to our backers once a month and looking at their ideas and suggestions and it’ll be at this point where we can say if we’re taking any ideas forward.
We’ll be presenting our backers assets within the game such as character designs, environments screenshots and artworks as they are being developed but we won’t be updating every day, every week – our team is small and unfortunately we won’t have time for this – our focus will be production.
But we’ve built our social media network with illo Facebook and illo Twitter, illo’s own website www.illothecool.com and updates through our partner’s sites. All of this means that anyone wanting to find out about illo and wants to join in, all the channels are connected to the project so just ask your questions and everything will get back to Luca and the Raylight team.
Throughout the production, we’ll be updating the press too. Character Communications Ltd www.charactercomms.com, is fully on board to spread the word within every market if needs be. We’ll be pushing illo to all media outlets from now until launch and once we get to launch, expect a comprehensive launch campaign as well. We expect a lot more games and lifestyle press engagement in the future and we’re planning for this now.
However, when you’re making a game with such unique qualities such as illo, there may be problems which raise their ugly heads. Having an experienced studio like Raylight helps us to avoid the majority of problems with their detailed planning and scheduling, but there can be delays with any video game production with even the most respected studio and game franchise.
We are going to create something original and bring some fresh ideas to market so potentially, fine tuning the gameplay mechanics could delay production. Also, other problems we could encounter could range from code bugs within the multiple platforms increasing QA time, new software from Apple or Android which could affect the code or even Mount Vesuvius erupting and cutting off the Raylight studio with molten lava coursing through the streets of Naples!
These things can happen, but please be assured that the team have planned out this entire project over the proposed 12 months, from concept to bringing the game to market, and we have looked at every possible scenario which could affect production and we’re confident everything is in place.
We are actually in the final stages of the pre-production and completing all the tools that we will use to build the game, to limit the majority of the risks during the production.
BUT, if we encounter even the smallest suggestion of lava (or absolutely anything else!) which could cause delays to the project, we will update our partners and explain the situation. There will never be a scenario where we ‘go quiet’ and you have to chase us – we’re using your money to make this game and we will never forget that.
We believe in illo – and even to get to this stage in the KickStarter process, a lot of people have worked for free with complete abandonment and enthusiasm because of this belief! illo has captured the imagination of a lot of experienced people and we hope you as well.
Because if you don’t like illo and don’t want to play illo, you won’t pledge and if you don’t pledge we can’t make the game.
The overall budget of $270,000 is the minimum this project will take to produce. But if we go over this budget (which we hope we can with your help), all additional monies will go into additional platform development.
