Thank You Backers!
Thanks to you, this project has been a mile-high success. We’d also like to thank Lloyd Alter at Tree Hugger and Ben Schiller at Fast Company for publishing our story. And of course Kickstarter for choosing us a Staff Pick and as the November 12th Project of the Day.
As promised, we will be donating dozens of copies of VERTICAL CITY : A Solution to Sustainable Living to schools around the world! VerticalCity.org
For every copy of VERTICAL CITY : A Solution to Sustainable Living sold, we are donating another copy to an educational institution somewhere in the world!
This massive - 9” x 12”, 619 page - multicolor, seminal work is hard bound and beautifully printed.
To complete this book, authors Kenneth King and Kellogg Wong interviewed more than 30 of the world's top architects, urban designers, engineers, microbiologists, transportation and sustainability experts to discuss the concept of a Vertical City as a potential solution to many of our world's greatest problems, including rapid population growth, environmental destruction and the loss of arable land.
A Vertical City is a series of interlinking, environmentally friendly, self-sustaining, mega towers that extend as high as a mile skyward.
By building Vertical Cities we can save energy, support our growing population and preserve our horizontal spaces for food production, nature and recreation.
This bilingual book, written in both English and Chinese, contains over 200 photographs, charts, sketches and diagrams that illustrate the emerging technologies of Vertical Cities and their potential implications for society. It features:
Adrian Smith+Gordon Gill, the architects behind Kingdom Tower, soon to be the world's tallest building.
Dickson Despommier, author of The Vertical Farm: Feeding the World in the 21st Century.
Anthony Wood, Executive Director of the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat.
Detailed Vertical City sketches by architect and author Kennith King.
and much more.
VERTICAL CITY : A Solution to Sustainable Living is the first and only book of its kind but this Kickstarter campaign is about way more than the book.
Our purpose is to promote the Vertical City concept as a potential solution to many of humanity's most pressing problems and to inspire others to create their own solutions, Vertical City or otherwise.
Because of the size and quality of this book, it will cost us $106.50 per book to printing the first run of 4,000 copies. In addition to the expert contributors, our team has invested thousands of hours into this project including research, development, translation and design.
For every copy sold we will send another copy on your behalf, to a school, library or similar institution for free! You can choose a specific institution, industry or region, or let us decide for you and we will notify you of the recipient.
and Shipping is Free!
You are probably asking yourself, "given that our costs are high and we are giving half of the books away for free, how does it make any sense to sell them for only $150?" Well the truth is, this project is not about making a profit, because we are clearly not going to do that. My personal goal is to honor my father's lifetime architectural practice aimed at making our planet a better place to live. As a team our goal is to start a world wide conversation about vertical cities. If this happens with your help, then the project will have been a big success.

Born in Shanghai, China in 1933 and currently living in New York City, Kenneth King is an ecologically-driven architect with more than 40 years' experience. He is known for the Montazah project in Alexandria, Egypt and the Mokkattam project in Cairo which has become a model for waste management in developing countries.

Mr. Wong has participated in award winning and well-known projects like the School of Journalism at Syracuse University, Everson Museum, the Overseas Chinese Banking Corporation in Singapore and the Bank of China Tower in Hong Kong.
As the son of Kenneth King, I am hosting this campaign on behalf of my father who is currently in China.
Our team is a group of architects, entrepreneurs and visionaries who believe that Vertical Cities are a potential solution to many of humanity's greatest problems. We meet regularly in Portland, Oregon.
Our Mission is to create a healthy, harmonious, sustainable and dignified life for everyone through the emerging technologies of Vertical Cities.
This is why we are Dedicated to Building the World's First Vertical City. The building that 100 years from now people point to and say "That changed everything!” We aren’t there yet, but this Kickstarter campaign is the foundation.
