About this project
Our First Restaurant
Where can I get your food every day? It's the first question everyone asks at the farmers' market after tasting a RawDaddy cone stuffed with vegan cuisine. Finally, we have the answer: At our first restaurant!
RawDaddy Inc has served 75,000 cones and has spent four years finding the best farmer's markets to suit our unique food. The restaurant is our latest project. Don't worry, RawDaddy Inc won't leave the streets, our tents, or our peeps. Nor will we stop our catering business. We are adding a brick and mortar location - a hip, quick and fun concept restaurant - so you don't have to wait seven days between your RawDaddy cone meal fixes.
Filling a Fast Food Gap
It's an idea whose time has come. RawDaddy's flagship restaurant offers what's missing from dining experiences around the world: nourishing fast food.
A Union of Cuisine & Cones
Serving meals in a cone is a game-changer, if we don't say so ourselves. In 2007 RawDaddy's founder James Hall invented the vegan meal in a flaxseed cone to challenge the idea that fast food always comes in a bun or taco shell. Skeptics might assume Hall would be handicapped by limiting ingredients to so-called healthy food like fruits, vegetables, and nuts. In fact, he's found that as soon as people hear the word healthy, they think the food won't taste great, but taste is what Hall is all about. Hall is so inventive that his ingredients are a celebrated culinary asset. In fact, you might be surprised to learn that two-thirds of RawDaddy customers are omnivores.
A Meal in a Cone
Praised as the "MacGyver of raw vegan cuisine," Hall amazes the most picky eaters - all the Mikeys* - who never thought living food could taste good. Using flavors from around the world, Hall reinvents sushi, lasagna, and even a Ruben in the form of living cuisine, all dished up in layers, drizzled with sauce, and overflowing from a cone. He even serves dessert cones with names like Pilgrim's Cream and Chocolate Cookie Dream cone. It's the most delicious and energizing food you could possibly eat. And, yes, it's also healthy, but please do us a favor and don't tell anyone.
* Mikey: The boy in the 1970s LIFE cereal ad, remember? "Hey Mikey, he likes it!"
Two years in a row, RawDaddy's Farmers Market Booths (yes, food served out of tents) took second place in the Best Vegetarian Restaurant category in the ABC7 Bay Area A-List contest, beating out San Francisco brick-and-mortar favorites like Cafe Gratitude and Greens.
And, well, this isn't exactly an award, but if people are saying this (see video clip @ 2 min 11 sec) about a RawDaddy cone, wouldn't you like to try it? O yeah.
The first restaurant will open in the San Francisco Bay Area. This is our Kickstarter project. Again, we are not abandoning our farmers' markets or catering business.
Someday, when 200 to 300 RawDaddy's restaurants dot the landscape from coast to coast, wouldn't you love to say you helped with the first one, way back when? This is your chance. We'd love your help.
A Restaurant and a Food Truck!?
The second most asked question: What about a food truck? We hope so! If we raise enough funds to buy and outfit a food truck, we will do that as well, allowing RawDaddy to bring our cuisine to you anywhere in the Bay Area. Since Kickstarter is an all-or-nothing proposition, we are focusing our goal on funding the restaurant only. Our baseline Kickstarter goal does not include the food truck. We have a hankering there is enough enthusiasm to do both the restaurant and food truck, so we hope you'll prove us right and we don't go home eating vegan crow.
Our living food cuisine is created using ingredients that are predominantly organic, seasonal, and local whenever possible. We do not use processed starches, sugars, meat or dairy products. We combine today's most recent culinary discoveries with the world's age old recipes and methods to produce our own nutrient-rich, fresh, and low-heat prepared fare. Every item we make is vegan, gluten-free, dairy-free, egg-free, soy-free... and loaded with taste! RawDaddy ingredients are planet friendly and the cones are consumed without the need for utensils or other packaging.
How We Will Use the Kickstarter Funds
Kickstarter funds will be applied to designing and tricking out our first retail space (it's gonna be cool!), including building out our kitchen and dining areas. Raw food restaurants have different kitchen requirements than most restaurants, for example we don't need a grease trap, an oven, or a hood but we do need a dehydrator bank and counter space for blenders, so there will be considerable conversion to a workable space for RawDaddy Inc's restaurant.
As mentioned above, if we exceed our goal enough to fund a food truck too, we'll buy one, trick it out and equip it.
Fabulous Gifts for Pledging
Please help us make this project a success. We hope you'll think these pledge gifts are great!
If you want to party your way to RawDaddy's success, check out our exciting events and catered meals.
If you want to shop with James Hall himself or, get this, challenge him to recreate your favorite dish into a cone filling, he can do that too! The challenge cone would be a particularly fabulous gift for someone on a limited diet - James is particularly good at re-creating different cheeses into raw vegan versions that people drool over.
If you want to name a cone after you or someone you know or you just have the most creative name ever, we have you covered. (Subject to mutual approval.)
If you want some chocolate haystacks, cones to stuff with your own fillings, or a couple bottles of our signature drinks like chocolate hempmilk or hibiscus nectar, please make a pledge.
If you'd rather have some RawDaddy schwag like a "Who's Your Daddy?" Tshirt, a logo hat, or a "Bagnostic" tote, we have options for you, too.
If you are more civic-minded, gift the students at a school of your choice (in the San Francisco Bay Area) with a class from James Hall.
We hope you'll like some of these options and choose to help RawDaddy today. We are sincerely grateful and excited about our restaurant project!
Risks and challenges
Prior to starting RawDaddy Foods, James Hall ran a successful multi-million dollar computer company for fifteen years. Hiring the right people and maintaining quality product is paramount to James Hall's business philosophy.
Risks include fluctuation of quality and price of food inputs, employee turnover, finding the right lease, and securing the best location for this type of restaurant.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
