A young woman from Mexico journeys to Cuba in the wake of her brother's suicide, in director Kelly Daniela Norris' feature film debut.
Welcome to our Kickstarter!
Not only is this an opportunity to view the WORLD PREMIERE of our trailer (in the video, above), but also a chance to aid immeasurably in the completion of a very special and deeply moving new film. We are raising $15,000 in order to complete Sound Design, record a musical score, acquire necessary music and media rights, and produce screening prints - all so that the film can be ready for its exhibition on the festival circuit this Fall.
Let's get it done and get it seen!
Shades of Blue (Sombras de Azul) is the story of Maribel (Seedne Bujaidar), a young Mexican woman who grieves her brother's suicide by traveling to the place he'd always dreamt of going - Cuba. There, through tortured ruminations and the guidance of a devoted stranger, she searches for answers, and must decide whether to open herself up to love and loss once again.
The film reimagines my own experience of bereavement following the death of my brother, weaving together real memory and reflection with the sights and sounds of a country still taboo to many Americans in order to form a unique cinematic elegy. Ultimately, Shades of Blue reflects on one of life's great ironies - that if living and dying are one and the same, then to grow close to someone is to open yourself to pain, and to love is to suffer.
Thanks to an AMAZING and dedicated cast and crew, we shot the film this past Fall in Cuba, becoming one of the first and ONLY American independent films ever to accomplish the feat. (The film is a co-production of Mexico, Cuba, and the United States.) After months of intense collaboration with the film's editor, Travis Pittman, we now have a Rough Cut that I am extremely proud of; a true realization of a deeply personal and (hopefully) universal story that first grabbed hold of me nearly 5 years ago.
The hard part's over; the journey's almost at its end; all that's left is getting the film to its audience. ANYTHING you can give will help incalculably to that end... and those rewards (on the right) aren't too shabby either.
Thanks for reading, and enjoy the trailer!

Yes, but the process is quick, painless, and SECURE. Kickstarter is set to surpass the National Endowment for the Arts as the #1 source of Arts funding in 2012! Payments are made through Amazon IF AND ONLY IF the film reaches its funding goal.
Please share our Kickstarter and web pages with anyone you know who might be interested and/or willing to take part in the project:
Simple words of encouragement are also highly appreciated! Thanks again!
