We are Rare Mags. We collect magazines so you can collect magazines.
Rare Mags is going to be in the heart of Stockport Old Town. We'll stock alternative titles on creative subjects from architecture to graphic design, photography, fashion and illustration. We'll also specialise in alternative culture magazines on subjects from new writing, cycling, tattooing, music, food and drink.
At Rare Mags we have a huge passion for printed media, immersing ourselves in sourcing hard to find, excellent magazines from around the world. Because we want to create a great space to look through our magazines, we will be setting up a small espresso machine alongside a seating area, giving customers the chance to browse and chat about fantastic magazine content. We will also be hosting open, welcoming launches, supporting great local artists and designers as well as giving the public chance to discover new small scale creative output.
In return for your support we will give back to the incredible creative and industrious community in Greater Manchester which we have grown up with for years. We are Martin and Holly and we live in Stockport. Martin is the founder of Henry Press, a small printers and publishers. He had art classes from the age of 7 at Stockport Art Gallery, studied at Stockport College and has lived most of his life in Stockport. Holly is from Bury, but we’ll let that one slide. She studied 3D Design at Manchester Met and is a keen cyclist. This is our home and we love it and want to play our part in not just growing a business, but supporting the community and bettering our surroundings for everyone.
Our stock will come from far, wide, and close by. We’ll work just as readily with a small press publisher in Japan as with a local photographer who is making their first zine. We want fairness, ethics and a complete lack of greed to form the backbone of our business.
We will form part of a thriving community of new business in Stockport Old Town. Through our background in magazine retail, publishing and printing services we’ve gained an understanding of what customers want, and how to give it to them. Because we are the fanatics too, we know how important it is to obtain the highest quality content.

Risks and challenges
The project is fully costed. We have secured a premises, with an initial two year lease. We have a good relationship with the landlord, who lives above the shop.
To keep costs entirely controlled and managed we are manufacturing the shop fittings and shelving units ourselves. This means that we can make the units freestanding and movable to other locations should the need arise. We also love designing and making so the process from start to finish will be a complete pleasure.
We have opened accounts with some key independent suppliers and have many contacts directly with magazine and print makers locally and around the world.
Two exhibition and zine projects are ready to go with eager, talented young creatives at the helm, alongside securing a series of limited edition prints from 6 local artists.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
