The Temperamentals chronicles the founding of the Mattachine Society, the first sustained gay rights organization in the United States.

Reward Update

If we surpass 100 contributors of $10 or more, you will also receive a nifty "The Temperamentals" button.

Last year, we successfully funded The House of Bernarda Alba right here on Kickstarter. The show was a great success - receiving excellent reviews and performing to sold-out houses for much of the run.

This year we continue on our mission of producing works that speak of civil rights by asking for your support to fund the Northwest premiere Jon Marans' The Temperamentals. This highly theatrical piece recounts the founding of the Mattachine Society, the first sustained gay rights organization in the United States, told through the love affair between Harry Hay and Rudi Gernreich.

In this time of great advances in gay rights it is time to remember what lengths the original gay activists went through and the heartbreaking sacrifices they did to make their point and be heard. Their evolution is quite astonishing.

Funding this project allows us to pay for all the production costs related to bringing The Temperamentals to the Northwest: rehearsal space and theatre rentals, build sets, costumes, lights, and most important puts us in a position to pay our actors and crew for their time and effort.

The income recouped during The House of Bernarda Alba has taken care of overhead expenses and supported two other Arouet productions: Lawfully Wedded, a series of plays on marriage equality; and the upcoming The Hen Night Epiphany, a play that deals with domestic abuse. We plan to continue to do present similar works after The Temperamentals.

Since Arouet is now an associate member of Shunpike, part of your contribution may be tax deductible.

Risks and challenges Learn about accountability on Kickstarter

Our biggest challenge is paying for the production. We reserved our space a year in advance. We have already cast some of Seattle's finest actors. The same design team from The House of Bernarda Alba is secured, they have been planning for months and are all familiar with the space.

The challenge faced by this production isn't abstract: we need money to build the set; rent, borrow, or buy period costumes; pay the license fees for the show and to cover our rent. Once the show is funded, we all get to work doing what we know how to do best.
