                                       __________

What we have developed is an audio file format (.ROA), as well as an audio player (Random Order Audio Player) to playback these types of files.

To associate, you may have heard of .mp3 or .aac files. While ours is not a compression method like those two, it is an audio format and it is something that we (Ryan & Matt) have developed from the ground up.

ROA combines audio files and plays them back in a predetermined, yet random, order. Predetermined meaning the sequence is laid-out (Beginning THEN Middle THEN End), but, "random", in that these sections may have possibilities (Beginning 1 OR Beginning 2 OR Beginning 3 THEN Middle 1 OR Middle 2, etc.). Because our format is new, it is not yet compatible with other audio players. So, we have created our own.

Why did we make a new audio format? What problem does this solve?

In the past, it was not feasible to have more than 2 or 3 recorded variations of a song (i.e. a Rock version and an Acoustic version - 2 files), let alone variations that could be mixed/matched every play-through. Producing (or even owning) 50 tracks for 50 combinations of variations to one song would not even be considered, and every time you played one of these audio tracks, it would be the exact same song and version every time.

The Random Order Audio format makes it possible for artists to create single audio files that can playback recorded variations for a nearly infinite number of combinations. Listeners are able to jump right in and choose a default combination, select their own custom version, or set the song to randomize.

For clarity, the listener is not creating the options in a song; simply choosing them. Variations are only what the artist has created and recorded. (i.e. If the artist did not record an acoustic intro for their track; the listener cannot choose it as an option).  Also, if the artist does not want the rock intro to play into an electronic verse; they can limit this as well.

There are a ton of audio players out there; why make our own?

Currently, you cannot make an .ROA song/file and post it on, say, Soundcloud, or play the song in any other audio player, because this format is neither accepted nor understood.

For companies of these other audio players (even something like your car stereo) to want to implement our format; it has to be used first. If no one is using it; why should they spend their time and money to implement it into their systems? And why would anyone want to make content for it, if it can't be played anywhere?

It's a bit of a Catch 22. So, we created our own (Free!) audio player to demonstrate our format and begin the demand.

Random Order Audio Player
Random Order Audio Player

The ROA Player is something that is an ongoing development. While it IS working and we have it as a FREE download on our website www.RandomOrderAudio.com (and it will remain Free), we are working on bringing it to more devices. Currently, our main platforms are PC and Mac Desktops/Laptops. If you notice any problems; please let us know! ROAComments@gmail.com   All feedback is greatly accepted! As every device can be unique, it will help us to make a more universally stable audio player.

We will perpetually be evolving and adapting this concept to the world around us; constantly looking for new ways to improve the experience of its users. Nearest future advancements include:

  • Availability on more devices/platforms
  • Save/Load functionality for personal Preset Orders (and the ability to share them!)
  • Simple-to-Setup Playlists. Not only of songs, but of variations/presets within the song playlist.
  • Custom skins and artist preset skins

(Timeline of improvements not currently set, but we will know more following the conclusion of our Kickstarter. At which time we will update you on our plans!)

                                       __________

With a functioning file format and audio player, it sounds like it's all squared away and ready to go. So, why are we seeking your help?

Currently, there are just two of us (Ryan & Matt), and only one of which is capable of tackling the coding aspect. We may have created a working file type, an encoder (software that produces the file), and an audio player, but that doesn't mean everything is finished. We're still in the early stages of where we'd like to be.

(As mentioned just above) Progressing our format and its capabilities to users is just one aspect, and expanding our player to more devices can be persistently time-consuming. All of these devices are constantly updating, which means we have to update our code, for each, almost as often.

A big piece standing in the way of completing all of this is a website. Developing a full storefront/community-driven website is a large task. For this reason, we have decided to ask for your help in obtaining a Kickstarter Goal that can fund our website and allow Matt (Programmer) to focus on the ROA Player and Encoder.

What will be on our website?

RandomOrderAudio.com is being made to have a localized space for all things ROA. It will be a site to download songs created by artists, our ROA Player (which is free!), and to learn what ROA is all about and how it works. With a storefront for artists to make a financial gain from .ROA (not just an artistic one!), this distribution will also fuel our ability to continue growing this format as well as develop its sibling media formats (explained in a video below titled "Future of ROA"). Artists may even sell tracks that are NOT utilizing the .ROA format (and we recommend this!). We call these "No-Variation Tracks." Find out more in Artist Video 1 & 2 here on this page.

                                      __________

                                            Artist Info Video 1

Imagine if Playstation or XBox were created, but didn't have any games for you to play on them. Strong consoles. Great storefront networks setup. However, meaningless without content, right?

Artists need to know Random Order Audio exists and that it's free and easy to use.

It is FREE to use our encoder and to create songs for the .ROA format.

Just like always - an artist writes and records a song.

The only difference? At any time down the road (Right away, 1 year later, whenever!), an artist may add as little or as much extra content as they want to their song (an .ROA file can even be played without any extra content!); place these audio files into our encoder to say what goes where and when, and they're done!

If an artist wants to distribute their song as an .ROA file; all we require is that they also distribute it through our website (once it's ready!). Song pricing will be up to each artist, with only a set minimum! (Artists will be able to distribute their songs for free or at any price above our set minimum)

What is the process of creating an ROA Track?

  • Create a song.
  • Go into the studio with all of your variations and possibilities ready.
  • Record your song & its variations.
  • Individually Bounce (into .WAV files) the sections of your song (or any place that contains a different possible outcome) into single audio tracks. (i.e. Bounce Intro 1 & Intro 2. Bounce all 5 Verse 1's, etc.)
  • Contact us (ROARecording@gmail.com) to receive our encoder - a FREE piece of software that will let you setup your song so that users can choose all of your options in our ROA Player. (we will also explain how to utilize this easy-to-use encoder. It's as simple as setting up this bullet point list!)
  • You're done!

                                         The Future of ROA

The core concept of Random Order Audio is not at all limited to audio. Audio is not only the proving grounds, for many reasons, but it is the perfect place to begin this journey into a new world of media customization.

Imagine your child learning something new every time you read them their favorite bedtime story. Imagine if your favorite scary movie never stopped scaring you. IMAGINE being able to personalize every bit of media in a realm of artistic freedom without it ever being overwhelming. Customization as simple or as involved as you want it to be. This is the goal, and audio in just the beginning. Random Order Audio will begin a new age of options.

                                                Larry Elyea

One of the very first people we approached with Random Order Audio (and boy were WE lucky!) was the oh-so-fantastic, and phenomenal, Producer/Engineer, Larry Elyea. He really jumped on board and is still as excited as we are to see this unfold.

His list of accomplishments goes on and on (and for good reasons!), but a small list consists of:

  • major label clients: Corey Taylor/Slipknot, Five Finger Death Punch, Jimmy Eat World, Authority Zero, Beastie Boys, Eminem, Snoop Dogg
  • commercial clients: Sony Playstation 2, News channel 3, Az Diamondbacks
  • local clients: Digital Summer, Eyes Set To Kill, Soundmankillz, Adelitas Way, Tragedy Machine, The Spider Hole, Comfort for Change

And has received awards and accomplishments, such as:

  • The New Times awarded Mind's Eye Digital "Best Studio in Phoenix" in 1996 and 2007, which was the only two years they have offered an award in that category.
  • 12 bands have been signed to Major Labels after completeing demos/records at Mind's Eye Digital.
  • "Larry Elyea has become the most coveted producer in Valley music"-Arizona Republic

Larry may say luck had a hand in his success (this is this honest, down-to-earth Larry that I'm talking about!), but I believe it's without question that, while luck may have played a part in producing him an opportunity, his status in the music industry is all his him!

I have, also, had the opportunity of being a client in his studio. He has support down to a science. Never stepping on your feet or pushing an idea of his own, yet always offering great insight and suggestion to the end result mix of your song. He just wants you happy with your song, and this is exactly the kind of treatment you will receive when you work with him as part of our Kickstarter Artiste Reward tiers.

                                              Digital Summer

Digital Summer is not your “typical” rock band by a long shot. The core of the group is held together by brothers Kyle and Ian Winterstein. Along with being professional musicians, the brothers manage to maintain additional professional careers of a completely different style. Front man Kyle Winterstein is currently a Firefighter/Paramedic/Technical Rescue Specialist in the Phoenix metro area. His brother and guitarist, Ian Wintersteinis a Flight Medic on a helicopter in a nearby city. These additional careers are what drive the lyrical and emotional foundation of what Digital Summer's music is about. From death and tragedy to passion and endurance, the songs on a Digital Summer album come from their real lives and their very own experiences."We're not looking to write about Hollywood glamour."Says guitarist Ian Winterstein,"We write about real life and hopefully our fans can relate."

James "Ex-Ghost" Keenan (Vocals/Programming/Bass) and Scott Passamonte (Guitar) met in college and put together a band to record the concept series’ debut album, The Apneist. The band completed a self-produced nationwide tour in 2009 covering over 8,500 miles, including performances and interviews at Comic-Cons in Ohio, Baltimore and New York City, where they released The Apneist album and The Apneist Comic Book Issue #0. James and Scott returned to the studio in March 2011 to record the 2nd and 3rd albums in the series, Vita Nova and Crystal City. The album trilogy covers an expansive range of electronic inspired pop rock.

In May 2012, A Life of Science released their first full length novel, "A Life of Science: The Apneist."

A Life of Science's performances consist of frontman James "Ex-Ghost" Keenan mixing the live tracks, manipulating live vocals, playing keyboard, and finger drumming on a LED drum pad. His high energy electronic sets highlight the fun, dancey side of A Life of Science's catalog.

                                       The Spider Hole

"The Spider Hole has been kicking up Phoenix dust since the late nineties, when founding members were still in their teens. The Spider Hole's nostalgic spin-cycle of rock ‘n’ roll, cabaret, goth, and alternative has defied genre classification and continues to evolve with each new era. Known for their quirky, honest, passionate performances, The Spider Hole puts on an unpredictable range of stage shows that can be garish and gimmicky, or subdued and sentimental, depending on the night."

                                           ROA Interview

The four core members of The Spider Hole come from diverse musical backgrounds. Vocalist Ethan Scott draws influence from The Doors, Tom Waits, Oingo Boingo and David Bowie, while bassist and co-founding member XerXes Quinn grew up listening to The Grateful Dead, Primus, and Garbage. Guitarist Aaron Kilen has played in mostly experimental metal bands for the bulk of his career, and drummer Chad Payne got his start in gutter punk. The space where all these mindsets overlap is being ever explored and expanded by The Spider Hole for a sound that is uniquely theirs, yet still familiar.

ROYAL SPEND, the band's second feature-length recording, was released in November, 2013

Forging form of polar dichotomy, the sound seamlessly flows from beautiful to brutal, landing its genre bending classification somewhere between rock, alternative, and metal."

Risks and challenges

To address the possible risks and challenges of completing our project, let's break it down to:

1. What needs to be done?

Upon a successful Kickstarter (where we have obtained our goal and received funds):

A) Backer Rewards (So you can collect our promises!)

B) Complete the Website redesign and make it functional (the whole purpose of our funding goal!), so that artists can learn about ROA, and have a place to distribute their songs so that their fans can experience them!

C) A finished, polished product; aka our ROA Player.

2. Where can these situations fall apart?

A) We have done our best to choose reliable sources for producing the perk rewards, but things happen. If we have any issues, we'll do our best to work through them to produce quality items or find another manufacturer who can tackle the job. Unfortunately, that may result in delays, but we'll do our best to deliver all of the items as soon as we can ship stuff we're proud to brand with ROA. We'll be sure to keep you notified!

B) The website is also another aspect related to good choice of manufacturers (of websites, in this case). We have already had meetings with the company (great track-record) to develop our website and put in time and money to establish what needs to be done, by when, and for how much. This time spent has produced written strategy-and-execution plan. Once we have the funding to move forward with the development; we're good to go. Given the detailed plan-of-action with them, surprises should be mitigated, but rarely does everything go as planned. For that reason, we have added a cushion for incidents in our funding goal, and have been assured that we can work towards a fixed budget ceiling.

C) This will be an ongoing challenge, but we believe it's a task we have already proven we can conquer. With your help, Matt will be able to direct all focus to the Random Order Audio concept. After all, ROA IS the project at hand; Our Player and the functionality of our format (driven by our encoder – a piece of software that takes audio files and spits out a complete song full of options and customization); not just a website for bands and their songs. With more feedback (as every device and machine is different and ever-changing) we can develop a more stable and functional Player for everyone. Software is a journey. It would be difficult to ever say "This is the final product." We will perpetually be evolving and adapting this concept to the world around us and constantly looking for new ways to improve the experience of its users. By this understanding, we already have a product you can experience. We can't wait to make it even better and to put it into more hands.
