Doormen are great! They greet you when you get home. They will open the door for expected guests. And they can tell you exactly who arrived at your home even if you weren’t around. Unfortunately, we can't all afford to hire a doorman.
Introducing the Keyforall
The Keyforall has all of the convenience and safety of a doorman at a fraction of the price. It unlocks the door for you when you get home, and it’ll watch your door and let your intended guests in too!
Imagine walking up to your door and have it authenticate your identity and simply unlock for you as you step up to it. No buttons on your smartphone to push or secret knock patterns; it uses Bluetooth and motion sensing to know when you're approaching. Never fumble with your keys again – unless you miss it; the lock still works with traditional keys.
The Keyforall isn’t a robot in the R2D2 sense, it’s a smart lock. It replaces your current lock but maintains the security of a traditional deadbolt. By combining the latest in modern technologies we have created a lock that will give you, your family, and your guests a richer experience.
- Instant Open - authenticates with your phones to provide instant access when you arrive at the door
- Entry Notification - know when your family arrives safely at home or when your guests arrive for the weekend
- Custom Access Codes - each family member or guest receives their own access code so you can monitor your kids and your plumber doesn't need to download the app
- Full Year of Battery Life - 4x AA batteries included
- Easy to Install - fits standard US deadbolt bores
- Intruder Alert! - know when your door has been opened by force
- Secure Design - secure exterior and encrypted connections to all software and hardware
- Integration with other home automation products
- iOS, Android, and web applications
The Keyforall combines a traditional deadbolt, a smartphone app, Bluetooth Low Energy, WiFi, and the Cloud to seamlessly make access to your home simple for you and your guests.
It replaces the standard deadbolt installation found in most US homes. Installation will only take about 10 minutes. In fact here's a video of Stephen replacing a standard deadbolt with a Keyforall in under 5 minutes.
By having the Keyforall be constantly connected to the Cloud you can do things like tell your Keyforall to share access with your guests from anywhere in the world.
When you share access your guests get a custom 6 digit code as well as access through the app. The code doesn’t rely on the app, so you and your guests always have a way to access your home even if your phones are done for the day.
The best part is that you can now see who’s opening your door and when they do it, even if you’re on vacation halfway across the world.
The Keyforall comes in two pieces. A deadbolt for your door, and a bridge that plugs into a wall near your door. The bridge will talk to the lock via Bluetooth so that the lock will have the latest codes and so that you will have the latest logs for your home. If the power goes out your lock will still run on batteries and pair with your phone and know the right key codes.
We're also working on an app to go with the Keyforall that allows you to configure and control your lock remotely. Here's a quick preview of it.
We’ve spent a lot of time to make all aspects of the Keyforall secure. This includes a strong security architecture and strong encryptions. All connections through the internet use the latest 256-bit SSL encryption standards. On top of that the access control is based on Public Key Infrastructure (PKI) encryption. Our baseline for security is that we as the designers and programmers, with full knowledge of the system and access to the servers, will still not be able to access your lock.
- TLS 1.2 256-bit Encryption for all network connections
- Bluetooth Low Energy
- 2.4 Ghz WiFi
- Fits into standard 2-1/8" and 1-5/8" deadbolt bores
- 4x AA Batteries (included)
We’ve made a lot of progress since we dreamed up the Keyforall in February. Since then we’ve been working full time to make it real.
At the end of July we installed the first Keyforall proof of concept in Patrick’s house to begin testing. We quickly discovered a handful of bugs that we were able to fix in our firmware and software. At the beginning of August we installed updated versions of the proof of concept in Stephen’s house. Then a week and more bug fixes later we installed a test Keyforall at Celia’s place in Boston.
Celia is a user experience designer as well as an Airbnb host, so we were really able to test and gather amazing feedback with her. Since then we’ve been able to make key design choices like going with physical buttons (a touch screen looks great, but they are awful to use when it’s raining out) and slimming down the footprint to fit on more doors.
We've put together an aggressive timeline that will allow us to ship rewards to you lovely backers in September and October 2016!
Risks and challenges
Our team has worked on a handful of Internet of Things (IoT) products in the past. We are confident that with your help we’ll be able to bring the Keyforall to market.
Of course there are a slew of challenges we, and all technology product creators, must overcome such as component quantities, manufacturing delays, app marketplace approvals, designing for manufacturability, etc. We have resources in place that we plan to engage if these challenges become overwhelming.
A risk we foresee, and see often on Kickstarter, is not being able to ship on time. Like many people say “hardware is hard.” We couldn’t agree more. We will make every effort to stick to our timeline and ship to you on time.
We also promise to stay in touch. We’ve all dealt with bad customer service before, and we do not plan to be part of that group. We will keep you up-to-date and reply to your questions and concerns in a timely fashion.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
