Runes & Regulations is a 2-4 player strategic card game that combines the aggressiveness of a horde of dragons with the passive-aggressiveness of a suburban unicorn.
Immerse yourself in this world of magic and the mundane by summoning mythical pets and casting powerful spells, all within the comfort of your own home.
Plus, as usual, we have Kickstarter Exclusive stuff for you to enjoy if you back the project! And who knows? Maybe there will be a surprise or two during the campaign... we'll have to wait and see.
Oh, and btw, our last game won the 2019 People’s Choice Award for Toy of the Year (THANK YOU EVERYONE WHO VOTED!!!!!) and the box for this one is a lot bigger. Just sayin’.
The Nefarious Neighbor expansion opens the Runes & Regulations game up to 5-8 players, and it completely changes the dynamics. In this expansion, a dark sorcerer with horrifying powers (and intentions) moves into the neighborhood, forcing other players to decide whether to team up or continue to quibble. The Nefarious Neighbor steals Creatures from other players and performs dark rituals to mutate them into frightening beasts. That neighbor plays with their own standalone deck (included in the expansion pack) which includes Corrupted Creatures, Curses, and Dark Runes.
The Nefarious Neighbor’s powers are so immense that their Corrupted Creatures cannot be destroyed, hexed, or stolen; however, the expansion also includes cards to shuffle into the Main Deck to help other players fight back and thwart that neighbor’s villainous plans.
Here are some early concepts of the Corrupted Creatures:
One of the most interesting parts of the Nefarious Neighbor expansion is the introduction of player role cards. In addition to the Nefarious Neighbor, other players will have the opportunity to take on a new role (in secret). These roles provide you with a second win condition that nobody else knows about, giving you the opportunity to surprise your neighbors with an unexpected victory. Since only the Nefarious Neighbor’s role is known, each other player around the table is left to wonder what role their opponents might secretly be playing. These roles include things like Mr. Griffin (who wins if they successfully summons 3 Griffins), the Henchman (who wins if the Nefarious Neighbor wins and Henchman has no creatures on their Lawn), and the Humane Sorcerer (who wins by successfully saving a Stray Dog or Alley Cat).
Runes & Regulations by itself is a super fun and interactive game, and we designed it to stand entirely alone. I say this because the game really works without the expansion, and we didn’t even start working on the expansion until we had the original game completely finished and play tested. Getting to add on this expansion was a dream, though, and getting the opportunity to actually make it a reality because of the support so far on this project is incredibly exciting. The introduction of this expansion just makes the game so much more dynamic (and really creates two different games).
BUT WE STILL NEED YOUR HELP!
We are still in the process of designing the Corrupted Creatures for the Nefarious Neighbor deck. These Creatures are going to be atrocious, awesome, and pure evil. We want you to suggest ideas for these creatures in the main comments section, and this is how I’d like it to go:
For each suggestion, I want you to start your comment with “For a Corrupted Creature, I think it would be cool if…” (and then include your suggestion).
With these suggestions, we are looking for specific features or attributes that can be Frankensteined together. For example, you might say “For a Corrupted Creature, I think it would be cool if it had 6 eyes,” or “For a corrupted creature, I think it would be cool if it had purple dragon wings.” Our Art team is going to look at these suggestions and combine them into amazing fearsome mutant creatures. Maybe we will end up with a Creature with 6 glowing eyes, purple dragon wings, curved horns, and a unicorn tail, for example, which would be pulled together from 4 different suggestions from 4 backers. I think it’s going to be a super fun and collaborative way to pull this expansion together!!!
Social stretch goals are a way that you can help the project keep growing and reaching more people! We appreciate your support, and we hope you’ll help invite people to our Unstable Games community.
During our last campaign, these live drawing events were so interactive and fun, and we want to create more of that magic with you!
Here is some of what you can expect:
- Turning pets into Mythical Creatures
- Drawing massive beards on your photos
- Designing new Creatures and artwork
- Drawing you as a sorcerer
We will be using BackerKit again for handling add-ons. Two weeks after the campaign ends, we will send out a BackerKit survey, and you’ll be able to tell us which add-ons you want (along with your shipping info). You can either purchase add-ons separately in BackerKit after the Kickstarter has ended, or add up all of the add-ons you’ll want and increase your pledge now. The choice is yours!
As we’ve done in the past, US backers can purchase add-ons with no additional shipping charges, and backers anywhere else in the world will be charged just a flat $5 (for any number of items you want!).
For the past few years, our team’s mission has been to design highly interactive games that are worth playing over and over. Through our work, we’ve identified four core values that are so important to us. These values have helped us at every turn in designing our games and running our projects.
Integrity: Because we believe there is never a reason to compromise on our ethics, we always choose to do what we believe is right, even when faced with compelling reason to do what is easy. This is so important to us and guides all of our actions as a brand. On our last Kickstarter campaign, we encountered several issues where we messed up, and it cost us tens of thousands of dollars to rectify those issues instead of brushing them aside to save the money.
Curiosity: Because our passion for progress outweighs our fear of failure, we always choose to listen actively, seek opportunities to learn, and challenge accepted thinking. This value has been so important because it is the way we get better. Starting from our very first project, we’ve made listening our biggest priority. We know we have so much to learn from you, and that’s why we want to make sure we take every comment into account and do everything we can to make our projects the best they can possibly be.
Compassion: Because we believe every person is undeniably inherently valuable, we always choose to act with empathy, lean into vulnerability, take care of ourselves, and celebrate the successes of others. As a team, this has been a really important value that has meant facing challenging conversations head on and always looking out for each other. It also guides the way we try to moderate our comments, because we want everyone to treat each other with the respect and dignity they deserve.
Community: Because we believe in the importance of meaningful connections, we always choose to bring people together and build relationships through shared experiences. Our Kickstarter community has been so important to us, and we have done everything we can to create those shared experiences throughout our campaigns. We hope you’ll join us in doing the same with Runes & Regulations!
And with that, I'd like you to meet the team that made this game possible!
Risks and challenges
While we are confident in the preparations we have taken for this campaign, we would be naive to assume that no risks or challenges lie ahead. With each new project we’ve launched, we’ve come across new problems to solve, and we expect Runes & Regulations to present its own unique risks and challenges that we’ll have to overcome.
During our last project, we fulfilled 96% of backer rewards on schedule. That's obviously lower than our 100% on-time target, and it’s caused us to do a deep analysis to identify the problems that contributed to this less-than-perfect delivery experience for our backers. We found several places we can improve our shipping plans, timelines, and internal communication to prevent similar issues from arising on this new project. This time around, we want to make sure every item in every package is accounted for well in advance (with plenty of buffer inventory in case anything unexpectedly comes up) to ensure a stellar experience for our backers.
There are certain parts of the process we can’t control. For example, sometimes packages get lost in shipping or held up in customs. That said, for each of these potential issues that we’ve identified, we are working on risk mitigation strategies (such as keeping buffer inventory and building extra time into our timelines for international orders). We really appreciate your patience with us as we’ve learned and grown through the last few campaigns, and we feel super confident going into this new project that we have set ourselves up for success!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
