1 cup Science Fiction,1 cup espionage, half cup of superheroes, and a dash of romance. Top with a generous heaping of snappy banter!
The Scifies Anthology is going to be a comic book featuring several stories written by me and illustrated by a host of seasoned as well as up-and-coming comic book artists. Our goal is to tell stories that are full of smart and interesting ideas, engaging characters and witty dialogue. I'm also a big believer in diversity and so will be making it an important part of this creative work, not only in the characters we create, but also in the people that create them with us.
Why I'm Doing This
Lots of reasons. But here are the top three:
- One of my life missions is to always promote diversity and this comic book WILL BE truly colorful if you know what I mean
- To help budding artists get their work and name out there and try to expose non-comic book readers to some great stories (not just mine)
- Because as a writer, when you have stories to tell, you can't NOT tell them.
How You Can Help
- Make a pledge. Any amount will be appreciated and will contribute towards making The Scifies Anthology.
- Tell your friends about Scifies. Help us reach out to people who can support this project.
- If you pledge, you will get access to the work in progress and we welcome any feedback, suggestions and ideas to help make The Scifies Anthology the best comic book it can be!
All the stories are written by me, Ramon Gil. Helping us on this project are artists like Rudy Nebres (DC/Marvel), Len Peralta (Geek-a-week), Ryan Orosco (Darna), Lui Antonio (Red Sonja), Gilbert Monsanto (The Darkness) and Jeric Acayen. Also included is veteran letterer Janice Chiang and critically acclaimed writer/editor Noel Shaw. You can see their bios here. http://www.ramongil.com/blog/?p=333
What You're Helping Pay For
The money raised through this kickstarter campaign will be used to pay everyone who has contributed (Art is work and artists should always be paid!) as well as production costs including printing, shipping, internet and other logistical expenses.
The final product will be a printed comic book and hi-res digital copy to be distributed at comic cons, comic shops and to the backers, a website that will showcase the stories in each issue, and depending on how much we raise now and in the future, more issues, like 3-4 times a year.
I'm a big fan of interesting high concept ideas, the struggle of everyday life and Aaron Sorkin dialogue. I'm hoping that moshing all that into a story will produce some entertaining tales. Here are what's in store for the first issue.
“Life with Superpowers” - What happens when you introduce a “superpower-granting armlet” into the complicated dynamics of a romantic relationship between a struggling, insecure guy and his more successful girlfriend. Illustrated by Gilbert Monsanto.
“The Digit Debacle” - Earth has just made contact with an alien race for the first time. But a little misunderstanding on the math may lead delicate negotiations straight to disaster. Pencilled and inked by Lui Antonio.
“The Men from DARPA” - A group of bumbling yet brainy government scientists go on an adventure to retrieve an object from the future from an ex-girlfriend. Art by Jeric Acayen.
“Race Encounters of the Third Kind” - Discover the dark side of modern agriculture: racism against Filipino farm animals! An amusing story with art that will make you smile. Funny pictures by Len Peralta.
“The Facebook Phenomenon” - Two superheroes battle it out with a supervillain while comparing Facebook pages. Swiftly drawn by Ryan Orosco.
All stories written by Ramon Gil and edited by Noel Shaw. Letttering by Janice Chiang and Fresh Concentrate.
The Thank You Gifts
All the premiums are listed under the Pledges section, but here are some images to help get your mouth watering. If you have any suggestions for pledge levels and gifts, I'd love to hear it!
So please support The Scifies Anthology and help add something special to the rich artistic culture that is the American comic book.
Thank you all who helped us reach and exceed our goal! They say that greatness begins OUTSIDE your comfort zone, so I'm upping the goal by $1000 to $5420! If we can raise that in the remaining 8 days, I will include a section that shows the process of creating this comic book and all backers will get an advance preview of Scifies issue #2! So keep making those pledges and help us entertain you!
Risks and challenges
After working 20 years in advertising and graphic design, I have extensive experience managing print production projects, supervising and art directing creatives and marketing and promoting products. The only real obstacle is everyone finding the time to get the work done but we're allotting ourselves enough time. We'll also be posting the work in progress so our Kickstarter supporters can give us feedback on the work as we do it.
Most of the stories are already half way done so we're in good shape. We're trying to get something out in time to promote during the summer comic convention season and help get the word out.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
