This is a Kickstarter Campaign to raise funds for a print run of issues #1 and #2 of the comic book series called The Hard Code by Ramon Gil and Trevor Von Eeden. The first issue is done and saw a small limited release in 2015 and the second issue is at the lettering stage. We would like to print 500 of each for supporters and comic con and local sales.
The year is 2268 and androids are part of everyday society as supposedly "equal" citizens. NYPD detectives and casual lovers Garcia and Drake, an "artificial person" herself, discover that androids are losing the "hard code" that has kept them subservient for a hundred years. Tensions rise as incidents of android disobedience multiply. As people's fears and bigotry increase, the world government considers rounding up all "blue skins" into internment camps. With the aid of Allegra, a mysterious woman from Drake's past, they must uncover the mystery behind the disappearing codes before full-scale war breaks out between man and machine. This comic explores the issues of race, slavery and sexual relationships.
“The Hard Code is an exciting sci-fi crime story with a well thought out and developed plot, which pulls you in from the first word balloon. The smart and tense banter between Detectives Drake and Garcia will have you checking in on their tumultuous relationship for issues to come. A refreshing take on the age-old man vs. machine.” - Theresa Romano, Writer at The Mary Sue
The Hard Code is a dream come true as I get to work with one of my favorite artists, Trevor Von Eeden, who was a major influence to many of today's comic book illustrators. Already a professional comic artist at the age of 16, he was the co-creator of DC's first African American superhero, Black Lightning and was a regular Batman illustrator during the 80s and 90s having pencilled the now famous tour de force, Batman Annual #8.
As mentioned before, we would like to print 500 full color copies each of the first two books for supporters and comic con sales. Anything over the target would go towards the making of Issue #3 and possibly #4. A few copies of Issue #1 were produced in 2015 for local cons and issue #2 is close to completion. Issue #3 and #4, which completes the series, are plotted and being scripted.
“It is an honest pleasure to find...a writer who... understands that drama doesn’t have to be all dramatic, and humor doesn’t have to be all belly-laughs.” - Robert J Sodaro, The Examiner
Written by Ramon Gil with art by Trevor Von Eeden. Inking for the Hard Code #2 by Lui Antonio and series colorist is Macarena Cortes. The final covers will be done by Norm Ilag.
If we reach the stretch goal of $4691, I will add two never-before-seen short stories to your Hard Code issues! The first one being, THE ORIGIN OF THE BEE illustrated by Roy Allan Martinez and TELEPORT, a Twilight Zone-like tale written by my very own brother Joey Gil and illustrated by ME!
LET'S DO THIS!!
Risks and challenges
I've had three previous Kickstarters, two of which were successfully funded. The one that wasn't taught me a lot (like don't launch your KS campaign in the middle of NY Comic Con!).
Aside from Kickstarters, I've successfully produced 4 issues of Scifies, 3 issues of Men from DARPA and various one shots including a 78 page trade paperback Scifies Greatest Hits with a foreword by Tom DeFalco.
There is no danger of this books not getting completed. We just need money to print them.
