UPDATE 2: We've created bonus rewards for our backers. If we hit $5,000, we'll send every backer a cool little magnet for the fridge, filing cabinet, or anywhere else you can think of. If we reach our first stretch goal of $7,500, backers who pledged $25 or more will also receive a handy desk calendar with a different photo each month. Nice!
UPDATE 1: Thanks to our awesome backers, we've reached our first goal! We're so excited because now we can get UPCs for our packaging - this is a big deal and will bring us more opportunities down the road. We'll also be able to implement a free delivery system within Portland as well as purchase some much-needed kitchen equipment.
Who is Rain/Shine/Sweet?
Rain/Shine/Sweet is a Portland-based confections company made up of two people; Steve Gerrity, the culinary genius and creator of our delicious products, and Melanie Miller, the master of all things administrative. We joined forces in February of 2013 to start a company that produces truly exceptional candy. We currently sell our confections online, at farmers markets in Portland, and local stores around town.
Caramel and brittle are our passion, and we know that the best products require extra effort to achieve true excellence. We take the time to cook in small batches and hand package each piece, ensuring the highest quality candy possible for your enjoyment. Our caramels and brittles are currently 70% organic and/or locally sourced - when you cook with the best ingredients, the results are something worth indulging in!
"Steve has taken ordinary candy recipes and has added a magical ingredient that I like to call, "Portland Essence", to create sophisticated layers of flavors that play quite well with one another." -Mark B. (Read the entire review on Yelp)
How We Got Here
Steve was partway through a PhD program when he came to the realization that it wasn't really what he wanted to do. Having been an avid consumer of candy all his life, all it took was one summer afternoon of making peppermints to prompt him to enroll in pastry school. There he learned how to make all sorts of delicious treats, his favorite being classic sugar candies. After working at various pastry jobs, Steve is excited to be bringing his confectionery knowledge to the forefront in his own company.
Melanie was partway through her career as an Office Manager and Bookkeeper when she decided to go back to school. She especially enjoyed taking business classes at PCC and PSU that allowed her to fill in some of the gaps in her administrative knowledge. After graduation, Melanie could no longer resist the entrepreneurial spirit that runs in her family and she jumped at the chance to partner up with Steve. She is thrilled to be putting her business knowledge and experience to work for her own company.

Our Goals for Growth
We've put a lot of thought into our goals and how reaching them will help us move forward as a company. You can see more details about them on our campaign site.
Successful projects are the ones that have a network of people who aren't afraid to use those share buttons under the main video. Become a part of the Rain/Shine/Sweet network by helping us spread the word! Meeting some of these stretch goals would make a huge difference for making our products even better and improving the way we do business. We can't do it without wonderful backers like you, and we are so grateful for your support.
We can't wait to send you rewards! Unless you choose one that states otherwise, we plan to have your rewards to you in the weeks (not months) following the end of our project. That means that you should have them by the holidays! (International backers may not receive rewards until January, depending on delivery times outside of the U.S.) Mostly we are offering our caramels and brittles because it's the best way to show that you are supporting people who make a fantastic product, but we've thrown a few other things in, just to keep it interesting.
Risks and challenges
The biggest challenge for Rain/Shine/Sweet, now and in the future, is competing in a mature industry. There are large companies out there making caramels and brittles, and their size enables them to be more efficient and cost effective than us. However, we see our smaller scale operation as a benefit. Rain/Shine/Sweet's confections are created entirely by our hands, allowing for more attention to the product during every stage of production, which ultimately delivers a much higher quality experience to our customers.
Rain/Shine/Sweet is small and, like all small enterprises, is subject to an increased risk of failure. To stay in business, owners of small companies must go beyond turning their passion into a great product or valuable service, they also need to have the knowledge and desire required to run a company. Rain/Shine/Sweet is fortunate to have both: Steve has used his culinary skills to create truly excellent caramels and brittles, and Melanie has the experience and drive to handle the administrative aspects of a company. Together, and with your support, Rain/Shine/Sweet has tremendous potential to be a success!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
