What is a prototype?

A prototype is a preliminary model of something. Projects that offer physical products need to show backers documentation of a working prototype. This gallery features photos, videos, and other visual documentation that will give backers a sense of what’s been accomplished so far and what’s left to do. Though the development process can vary for each project, these are the stages we typically see:

Proof of Concept

Explorations that test ideas and functionality.

Functional Prototype

Demonstrates the functionality of the final product, but looks different.

Appearance Prototype

Looks like the final product, but is not functional.

Design Prototype

Appearance and function match the final product, but is made with different manufacturing methods.

Production Prototype

Appearance, function, and manufacturing methods match the final product.

About

Ancient civilizations have been harvesting and storing rainwater for thousands of years. There is evidence that as early as the 3rd century BC, people were harvesting rainwater and using it for drinking and watering crops. Recent events, such as the water crisis in Flint, Michigan and the record-setting drought in California, have revived interest in rainwater harvesting as a solution to global water issues.  In addition, Rainwater harvesting is gaining ground as a clean technology because the water is caught and stored locally rather than pumped to your home.

We designed the RainJug to be a perfect starting point for any adult or child interested in rainwater harvesting. It installs in minutes with no tools required- all you need is an empty jug! Better yet, it can be scaled and customized with a variety of DIY projects.

RainJug Kit easily attaches to any US standard 1 gallon milk jug. It is made from food safe HDPE plastic and weighs approximately 1 lb. The DIY kit ships flat packed in a legal envelope.

Risks and challenges

RainJug has already been developed and we have the ability to manufacture and ship the product. All we need now is your help in spreading the word about RainJug and the benefits of rainwater harvesting. Your donations and feedback will help us gauge public interest in this technology, as well as assist us in reaching out to as many people as possible.
