January Update - Prologue

Posted by Lars Simkins (Creator)

Hello, everyone! (Wow, February already? Scary...)

Gameplay Footage!

I know you've all been waiting to see more of the game in action so I'll get right to it. Here's a quick video of our character creation system, plus a glimpse of the prologue sequence. (Note: all the standard disclaimers apply - still in alpha, still has glitches, etc.) Enjoy:

We have a multiplayer programmer

Remember how annoyed I was about our lack of a multiplayer programmer in my last update? Well Matthew Davey has joined the team and he's working hard to turn that frown upside-down. He's chipping away at a multiplayer implementation and making good progress. In fact if he keeps moving at this pace we may see multiplayer *mostly* finished within a month. (I'm as surprised as you are.) Huzzah!

I have more news but I'm going to save it for the next Doom Ray Special bit that's coming up - I expect Kyle and I will go over Steam Dev Days (including my experience of Valve's VR demo) and a ton of other fun stuff. Once that's online I'll post another update.

In the meantime keep submitting your Botanist / Building / NPC / etc. kits because I'm having a blast reading them - the Building kits in particular are a lot of fun.

It makes me happy to know that I'm still just as excited for this game as I was back when I first stumbled upon it. Keep up the good work! Can't wait to play it!

I hear you about the character model, but this is our solution to the problem of 'how do we make a character generator without having to make a character generator?' I knew we didn't have the time or budget to create a full generator with a ton of options & a preview model so it's destined to be a little abstract.

That said: Ryan also suggested leaving the family photo in view so you can see it change as you make your selections. That's something I'm looking into.

wow looks great. I am glad to hear the multiplayer is comeing along as well. To add to someone who mentioned a floating character model as a preview a better option (to add to the immersion instead) would be to have the picture that the uncle picks up visible to one side of the letter and have the details of the character filled in as you answer the questions. I really like the way you have approached it in the letter writing.

Kind of a unique character creator. Quite like it, though it would be nice to actually see how you'd look as well. Also, does that mean there will only be one short and one long hairstyle to choose between? Personally, I tend to spend quite a bit of time in the character creator in most games, to make sure I like the looks of my character..

Anyway, the preview looks good. Really like the atmosphere. Can't wait to try; really looking forward to this game! :-)

One thing that would make character creation a little less abstract and keep the focus better would be to include a floating little player model in the air next to the letter which would change as you mouseover the different buttons. A sort of preview model if you will.

Well, the character models (especially the hands) obviously need some work (I LOL'ed hard at Robert Hammersmith XD ), but otherwise, this looks to be a nice game. I particularly liked the character creation, it feels kind of natural. Oh, and I do hope that the walking animation is also in Alpha state.

Looking great. I don't want to steal the spotlight, but a Frontiers subreddit has been set up, and we hope to have a small community ready for the launch,
