The Romans is a game in the best Ragnar tradition: highly thematic, epic proportions, crisp mechanics and, above all, fun! It's also an unusual Roman game in that each player creates an empire on their own unique mapboard in this third, and final Quantum game from Ragnar Brothers.
The artwork sets out to entertain, and we hope novices to historic games will embrace the genre in the way we did when we first joined the hobby. Ragnar Brothers' games help share a story together and encourage players to release their inner viking.
The Romans is for 1-4 players with each player combination working equally well. Game length is 90 minutes for the solo game, rising to 150 minutes for the 4-player game. This is a game that teenagers to full grown adults will enjoy, but no doubt there will be talented youngsters wanting to play.
In Essen people loved the game and repeatedly asked for two things - plastic miniatures (financially not possible) - AND a cloth map!
We can’t do individual map boards in cloth as all four are different, however we have secured a cloth sample of the Building array from our manufacturer and it looks terrific! So, we would love to include this in the game and are setting a stretch goal of £17,000 to cover the increased costs.
As requested by an early-bird backer, here is a slightly longer than 1-2 minute game overview.

... and a fun review by Giles Pound
Here's a sample of what's in the box and a taste of the game play:
Each player builds their own Roman Empire - none of that nasty fighting each other! The game has a simple AI system in which the Enemy gets to fight back.
Players compete by placing Senators into Buildings either to develop their position or to score points towards victory.
Buildings appear in random order, providing excellent game variety and replayability.
The game has two sets for both Romans and Enemy - so nothing too predictable!
Players win these by conquering the remote provinces of Britannia, Germania and Mesopotamia.
Players race to achieve Glory in their allocated province.
.... representing all manner of things in the Roman world. Each player has their own set of Senators / Generals, fleets and Native forces..... and of course....
Each player has a set of 18 pieces and boy, do they look good as they campaign and garrison your map!
There weren't any ..... simply because we couldn't think of anything that would genuinely improve this game ... and we didn't want to add on unnecessary tack.
BUT NOW..... HOW'S THIS ?
We have set the base reward for one game at just £30 plus shipping. The game will be as good as we can make it, and we want as many people as possible to enjoy the Ragnar experience.
As with the previous two Quantum games (Nina & Pinta and Darien Apocalypse) we will be happy to record the names of all Kickstarter backers within the game - individuals may request not.
What's Not to Like? features a complete 2-player game (played solo) in five videos. Please dip into these to see how the game progresses through the Eras.
The rules are still in the long process of graphic finalization. We will post these and update through the campaign.
Risks and challenges
Over a thirty year period, we have designed, produced and marketed twenty unique games (the last six of these with the help of Kickstarter). The Romans will be the twenty-first and final Ragnar Brothers game - retirement beckons. It's been a great adventure and a hobby through which we have made many friends. We hope you will help us to go out with a Bang! and not a whimper.
You will have noticed that there are no stretch goals for this project: we are putting everything we can afford into the game and want everyone to have the best experience possible. Provided we reach the KS target, that's what we will deliver. The production run for the game has to be a minimum 1000 copies, and if we reach or exceed that amount through KS, then be sure that only so many will be produced. It would be great to be able to say The Romans was exclusively available through Kickstarter.
We anticipate the game being dispatched by June 2019 at the latest, if hopefully not sooner. All our KS games have been fulfilled on schedule.
We would like to say a massive thank you to all who have supported us in the past and to anyone coming aboard for this final party. Especial thanks must go to our wonderful artist, Marco Primo, and his good wife Denise. Without their help we would have faded away long ago. Finally, a big thank you to Kickstarter and to all the people working there and making dreams into reality.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
