About this project
Darien – stand against the Apocalypse!
1698: The hopes of a nation set sail for the Isthmus of Panama. The Gulf of Darien promised much for the Kingdom of Scotland; independence from England and a chance to stand as equals with the great trading countries of Europe. However, the fate of this New Caledonia would be beset by famine, pestilence, war and death. In under 18 months this brave attempt to carve out a new frontier would end in disaster. The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse turned their eyes to Darien and found it an affront to the order of nature. Mortal sinews and stamina would not prove sufficient to overcome the visitation of inhuman wrath and by early 1700 the only remnants of this outpost of humanity were overgrown graves and derelict huts. The Horseman had triumphed.
Can you do better against infernal forces ? Can you build a thriving community that defies the Four Horsemen?
In this game for 1 - 4 players you will make that arduous journey to Darien and you will attempt to survive all that the Four Horsemen can send against you. Darien Apocalypse can be played cooperatively or competitively; succeed against the Horsemen with or in spite of your fellow adventurers – you choose. The fate of a nation rests in your hands!
A four player game will be 2 hours and there is a lot of player interaction in both cooperative and competitive game modes - your actions will have effects on the other players and the novel Action turn system means that all players need to pay attention to what the Active player is doing and make a decision as to whether they want to spend their more limited Action tokens on the same Action. Rules will be uploaded as soon as the presentation/format of them is complete.

Here's further explanation of the game from What's Not to Like?
First an overview of the game with Ragnar trial components and rather optimistic Kickstarter launch date!
And then, with a mock up using near complete artwork....
And finally, for those of you who were missing Phil....
The game will have a rich array of components:
As with all Ragnar Brothers games there's going to be plenty in the box! But here's where we are looking for extra support.
The game requires sixty-eight playing pieces. In the past we have used top quality wooden prismatic figures, as in Promised Land, DRCongo, Nina & Pinta and Backpacks & Blisters.
However we would love to go further and to raise the thematic feel of the game to another level. So, we commissioned a 3D sculpt of a Horseman of the Apocalypse figure.
... and subsequently our manufacturers have produced a 40 mm mini-fig.
Our hope is to produce the game with four of these Horsemen (Pestilence - white, Famine - black, War - red, Death - yellow) at this size 40mm and sixteen Shadow Horseman (same colours) at 25 mm height.
As you can see we are well underway with this, but that's not all. What would really dramatise the game further is to produce mini-figs of the Scots themselves; twelve per player. We are at the provisional artwork stage with this....
We would then like to enhance the game by using plastic barrels to replace wooden cubes (packing crates).
And finally, what about the four ships in plastic - large enough to fit up to twelve Scots in each. Quite a dream for Ragnar Brothers.
So, this brings us to Stretch Goals and here they are:
We're now asking for your support to make this terrific game a terrific reality. As ever we are keen to hear your ideas on how we might make the game even better and look forward to hearing from you. Meanwhile please have a look at the rewards on offer.
Risks and challenges
It's nearly thirty years since we produced our first game (Angola), but rumours of us retiring from the hobby have been exaggerated. What keeps us going is the desire to be innovative and to keep pushing the boundaries of game design. In Darien Apocalypse we have taken the story of Scotland's ill-fated endeavour and used a quantum multi-world approach to make a novel exploration of positive as well as tragic outcomes.
Ragnar Brothers is an independent games company and we have successfully completed six previous Game projects on Kickstarter. As usual we have fulfilled our commitments on our previous project before embarking on this one, We are confident that we can deliver Darien Apocalypse at the quality you expect and on schedule (April 2018). .
We are grateful to all our supporters without whom our games could not be produced. We are trying our level best to reach out to more gamers around the world and do our best to keep a tight rein on shipping costs.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
