Game Theme and Mechanics
The English Lake District is blessed with the most spectacular landscapes and is accessible to novice and experienced ramblers alike. Marco Primo has captured over sixty scenes for the game and even now is creating a unique Christmas card for all our supporters.
So let's tell you more ....
Backpacks and Blisters is a game for 1-6 players that gives you the chance to explore its mountains, streams, villages and - oh yes - lakes.
Your day begins at 10 a.m. and you will walk to locations to score points until the evening. With money in your pocket and various pieces of Equipment at your disposal, you can do all manner of things. The player scoring most points at the end of the day will be declared the winner.
You will have to cope with all those real life rambling difficulties: your hand of cards reduces as the day goes on,
you can't rely on the weather,
pesky blisters may slow you down
and, above all, watch out for the Heavy Rucksack being passed your way!
Fortunately, Equipment is there to help you:
- and never forget the restorative power of buying refreshments or a bar of chocolate!
Target locations (Cairns) are set at the start of the game - but do you race to those close by or plan a route to others further afield? On your journey you may also visit locations dear to your heart and thereby fulfill 'Secret Desires' . There’s plenty to do and, of course, never enough time to do everything. Give it your best shot and get those walking boots on!
History and Future
'Backpacks and Blisters' is having a re-boot (little walking joke there...). We designed this game in 1993
and sold some three thousand copies to a world coming to terms with video-gaming at the expense of board games. Since then, many have asked about re-printing in full colour and we hope to make it happen with your help. In preparing the project we couldn't resist re-configuring some aspects of the game (including new Equipment tiles) and we feel these to be a great improvement on the original. However, purists have no fear; the traditional B&B cloth map is available to Kickstarter backers as a bonus item. This is still a game to pack in your rucksack and play at the top of Helvellyn!
Video Review and Demo
Please note that the demos use pre-production samples including prototype cloth maps.

Some Quotes from BoardGameGeek
' ... I love offbeat themes like this. Game-play is as good as it can be for a lighter game in this style. Highly recommended. I like this better each time I play.' - markabq (and not someone we know!)
' ... Charming would be the name of the game. A meander around the highlands, take-thating on your friends, and stopping to eat at nice places. Nice cloth map and quiet gameplay makes for an enjoyable time. Too bad my deal for a copy fell through years ago.' mi de (change of luck, maybe?)
'... A surprisingly good game, in that a tea towel with Kendal and the lakes and a hill walking theme doesn't grab you as an immediate winner; but persevere beyond those and you're likely to enjoy it. Certainly the chance to hit your target peaks, take a break for afternoon tea and catch the last bus home, after benefiting from a wee boost from a bar of chocolate, just before the lakes shut down for the evening is great fun'. - Celtic (the game in a nutshell)

Brexit and Ragnar Brothers
As you know, the UK has voted to eventually leave the EU and this has had a significant effect on exchange rates. The Pound Sterling has fallen somewhat against several currencies including the US Dollar and the Euro making our game a more attractive proposition for those outside the UK. Ragnar Brothers accepts the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune and is not increasing pledge levels, so please help us get this game out on time and for a very good price!
We have set quite a modest project target, because that will give us a better chance of reaching all theses enhancements.
Wooden Sheep die-line - will be 25 mm in length
Derwent Ferry die-line - will be 25 mm in length
Tourist bus - will be 25 mm in length
Mini-score marker - will be 15 mm in height
And as an added request please Like us on Facebook to spread the word....
Our artist, Marco has created over sixty images of the locations featured in the game on map and cards. In order to celebrate these we are featuring one on each day of the Kickstarter and, in addition to the full colour image we are posting a 'colouring book' sketch which can be copied and shared. If your children produce a terrific picture, why not send us a photo and we'll post it here. There could even be prizes !

Risks and challenges
Ragnar Brothers is an independent games company and we have successfully completed five previous Game projects on Kickstarter. We are confident that we can deliver Backpacks and Blisters at the quality you expect and on schedule (May 2017). The game has a spectacularly illustrated map board and we are also hoping to include some fun components to add even more character to the game experience - see Stretch Goals.
We are grateful to UK supporters without whom our games could not be produced. We are trying our level best to reach out to more gamers around the world, particularly to help promote the Lake District as a World Heritage Site in 2017. To this end we are continuing our partnership with Fun-again Games in order to reduce postal costs into the US.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
