About this project
The story is told by Kate...
The Start: How we all met
I started collecting vintage clothing in 2006 when I moved to Los Angeles. Meagan and I met in 2010 in LA through her cousin, whom I grew up with. We bonded over our love of all things vintage, especially clothing. We both worked retail jobs that weren't doing much to fulfill our creativity and both hated watching the waste that the fashion industry creates. Greg is Meagan's friend and they both currently live in Virginia. I met Greg when he came to visit Meagan in LA. We went for a hike, talked about life, and became friends. Greg is on board as a cameraman, and we'll likely have another join us.
The Facts: Our Mission
Meagan and I want to create a web series about a cross country journey we are going to take: we will travel the U.S. in search of awesome, recycled clothing, and then resell it in other places. We are finalizing our route, but planning on hitting some of the biggest flea markets across the U.S.! Places like Daytona, Florida, New York, NY, and the world's largest flea market in Canton, Texas! The towns we shop in will be everywhere in between. We will interview the people we meet along the way, making stops in all sorts of places, big and small. We will incorporate makeovers, to show that anyone can wear thrifted, vintage clothing. As well, we will create photo shoots with the locals and collaborate with photographers and other artists. We'll show you how you can make money from your closet, where to donate things you don't want or need anymore, or how to save items before they get tossed (DIY projects). Think American Pickers meets Fashion Hunters style series!
We plan on being on the road for about a month and a half. Along the way you get to follow our blog where we'll be sharing our stories, sharing some videos, and of course, sharing the rad vintage that we find! Feel free to interact with us!! Of course we'll update our location in real time so if we're in your town please come and meet us, hang out, and shop if you'd like!
When we return to LA we'll get busy editing and cut the footage into a web series for all to watch.
Any donation will help. We are a small, entrepreneurial group of people. We are not asking for a lot, just the basics to get us started. We are a very motivated group of people who intend to see this project through to the very end! The money raised will be for the production costs and crew. Everything from camera equipment, hard drive storage, the crew (camera men and editors) and small fees to set up at flea markets. Your donations earn you free clothes, art, watching us get tattoos, and even a hometown visit!!! Although my site is primarily women's clothing I will be expanding on mens items with the help of my new partners!
No Money- No problems!
You can also contribute by sharing this video. Send it to your friends and family and ask them to share it also! A simple act of kindness! The wider the net, the better the chances! OR, you could HOST us! That's right, we will be travelling across the country and we want to cut down on costs by staying with friends. Let me know where you're located and if you're on our route, I'll contact you to set up a stay. We don't mind camping in your backyard if that's all you've got!! We are happy to earn our keep too....Just picture it...Kate's cleaning your closet, Meagan's touching up your roots, and Greg's fixin' dinner on the grill. Whatever it takes!
I have been dreaming of doing this for a very long time. I recently got laid off from my position at an existing resale company, because my "position was no longer available." I was attempting to push myself creatively at my job and my employers cut one of the very few creative positions. I loved my job and the people I worked with and for, very much. I was devastated when it happened. I felt like I was losing a family, a support system and safety net all at once. But what else can you do? You pick yourself up and you move on. I got an internship shortly after, working with a stylist for Rodarte, and have taken other styling and wardrobe related jobs in between in order to keep moving ahead.
Now is the time to create this show! We will make this trip and this film regardless, but it can't be done to its full potential without your help!
A VERY SPECIAL THANKS TO:
Lauren Tracy, an inspired young film maker for making this video for us.
The Other Side of Morning: For letting us use their song "Rise and Fall" from their album, Letters From Your Love, The Madman, and supporting us in our journey of artistic freedom.
Consultants: Rebecca Silva, Chuck Dickinson and Soroosch Aidun
And of course our families for their continued and undying love and support!!
