About

As it stands now, the campaign has failed. But that's okay! The game is still coming out in force on 30th of May! Make sure you guys wishlist the game on Steam so you can get a notification when it comes out.

Hello everyone, we hope you enjoyed watching the trailer! Let's get into it shall we?

This game is for Windows only right now. The game will be distributed DRM-free and backers will also get a Steam key as soon as the campaign ends!

Before we move on, it should be known that Gaia is in pre-Alpha and the reason why you can download an early version, if you're an 'Wolf' backer, is so that you know that a lot has already been invested in this project; it's not just an abandonware.

Now a bit about the genre

Gaia is its own genre as it was inspired from a bunch of totally unrelated games, such as Rimworld, tower defense games, RPG's like Skyrim and survival games like Subnautica. You could describe it as a RPG, survival base building game.

 A bit of Gaia story

In the game, you, the player, control Amanda, a treasure hunter on a quest for finding the original planet from which humans evolved. It is said to host incredible ancient technology, one which can bend time itself. However, as her ship approached this particular planet at the edge of the galaxy, something went bad with its engine, which caused a chain reaction of explosions from which only Amanda survived as she crashed on the planet in an escape pod. From this point, you will decide how the story continues and ends.

 A bit about game play

Here's what you can currently do and what the game offers:

° Gaia contains intelligent AI, such as coward AI (for example, deer) that runs away from you if you come too close, passive AI like most other wildlife, aggressive AI like most monsters and all space pirates, or territorial AI like wolves and sand scorpions. The AI is quite intelligent in its decision making. It can figure out the best targets to attack, such as a turret that poses a threat to it, or the player if it has ammo on him. It spreads out so that they don't all bunch up in one place and they can retreat from combat if they're running low on health. AI have some pretty deep stats as well, not just a health bar and a damage counter, They can catch fire and then spread that fire as they try to run away... They can accumulate radiation and then die from it.

° And much more.

A few more details

Difficulty:

Gaia is based on a dynamic difficulty setting. Although in the beginning you can choose multiple modes such as hard or easy, the difficulty of the game will change as it progresses. It is based on different factors but mainly on the AI storyteller you chose as well as wealth, a stat which most items and buildings have. The more wealth you have, the higher the difficulty is; so raids will consist of more difficult AI such as space pirates landing near your base using dropships.

AI Storytellers:

Gaia also has three AI storytellers. Each storyteller provides you with a different type of game play experience.

Building:

Similar to RTS games, you place a building when it shows that the location you chose is valid. However, GAIA also comes with a socket support. Walls and other support parts have sockets that accept different types of 'buildings', such as a picture frame on a wall, or an assembler on a floor. Some buildings don't need floors, like turrets or solar panels which need to be built outside on the ground.

Human needs:

There are quite a few human needs in Gaia currently. These are hunger, thirst, rest, leisure, oxygen, hygiene, bladder and sanity. Most needs work as you'd expect. If your hunger drops too low for example, you'd lose some max health. But some needs impact other things like sprinting speed and sanity. Your mental sanity depends on a few factors, such as being clean, being well rested and being joyful. If you lose too much of your sanity, bad things will happen. You might start seeing things that aren't normally there or you might pass out and may or may not wake up.

A bit about future plans

We want you to be able to have a big say in the development of Gaia. The way the game is currently being developed is by packages. The basic idea is to work on a package, finish it and move on to the next. This way, the game can grow according to what the community wants the most while also maintaining a playable version at all times. Below you'll see a few of the features that have not yet been implemented but which we'd like to see some day in the game. Please note that it's not a roadmap or a plan. These features may never actually make it into the final version. These are just options that I'm providing to the community so they can decide in which way we take the game after the Kickstarter ends.

We've already done the Endgame package and the Steam community chose building an escape ship a few months ago. I'll be holding polls over which package to implement next after every major update to the game. You can find a LOT more info about the different packages here.

A bit about the author

My name is Radu and I've been the sole developer of Gaia so far. A bit about me: I made a few mobile games before as a hobby, as well as experimenting with Unity 3D for several years. Like many of you, I'm passionate about games and the goal with Gaia is to give something back to the community, something amazing hopefully, as you'll be the judge of that.

Why the funding?

Some of you may think 'wow that looks like a finished game' from seeing the trailer while others may think the complete opposite, or are less inclined to trust the trailer. The truth is, a majority of the base game is done and the game really does play as in the trailer.

Indeed, the game has been in development for almost a year now and I have gotten to the point where there are things I can't do, such as audio and art. So a big chunk of the money raised through this campaign will go towards hiring a professional 3D modeler.

The game also lacks its own music, so another chunk will go towards hiring someone who knows their way around audio. And of course the last big chunk will go towards hiring an artist, a person who can actually draw and design.

I want to read more about this, where can I find more info?

You can find a lot more information on my dev blog or the forums. You can also check out the Steam page here!

When will the game be available?

If you're a Wolf tier, you can get the game as soon as the Kickstarter campaign ends. Bear in mind that the game is in pre-alpha, so there are probably some balancing issues as well as some bugs, though I've been working these past few weeks on squashing every bug my testers and I  could find.

A dozen or so people have had access to the game for a while now and they do enjoy the game play.

When will the game be completely done?

It will go through several Alpha phases before it can be qualified as fully done. After the first public alpha, each alpha after that will consist of major content that will add on to the game, sort of like a DLC, but free. Development could go on for a long time, but anyone who gets the alpha will continue to get updates up to the final game.

Is the game DRM-free?

Yes it is, no DRM at all.

Will the game come out on Mac and Linux?

Maybe. The game runs on the Unity engine, which does support mac and linux. However, there are no immediate plans to add support for these two platforms in the near future.

How do I know it's not just abandonware?

As many of you know already, a lot of game projects on crowd raising websites do not actually deliver a product that meet expectations or don't even deliver a game at all! Hopefully this fear has been addressed by providing you with a real, working and not-so-early version of the game.

Another big concern is the fact that this game doesn't have many people working on it, as a team, like most studios do. But it does have one dedicated and passionate individual, who has been putting in a lot of effort, time and personal financial resources into it already. The reason I waited so long before starting a Kickstarter and going public is because I had to make sure that this project will come to completion. You can read what the testers of this game think about it or you can watch some videos of game play.

Any plans for multiplayer?

Not for the foreseeable future, but if the community consistently asks for it, then sure why not! Right now I'm focused more on the existing features of the game.

Can I make videos about it?

Yes anyone who owns the game can. If you don't and if your videos have at least 1000 views, then please email me.

What kind of music vibe are we talking about here?

Right now, there's only ambient sounds in Gaia. However, with the help of this campaign, there'll eventually be radio stations with different types of music styles that you can choose to listen to as you play. Think GTA-V or Mars Radio from Surviving Mars with its chill songs and amazing jokes.
