What is the Radlicht Bike Lighting System?
Radlicht is a set of aerodynamic tubes that are connected to the spokes of your bike wheel. They're made from a very light and strong material, filled with a special gas illuminated with powerful LEDs installed from both sides of every tube. This makes the tubes ultra-bright but at the same time not blinding to drivers. Radlicht represents the first fully functional side lighting solution; more specifically, the first solution based on a spoke mounted design!
How Does It Work?
Radlicht works by creating the appearance of a brightly lit, solid colored disk as your bike wheel spins. All of the footage in our video was made using our prototypes.
How Heavy Is It?
Total weight with battery block is less than 100 grams (3.5 ounces). The tubes together weigh approximately 30 grams (one ounce). The weight of the tubes is distributed evenly around the wheel.
How Long Does It Work?
Radlicht works for more than 5 hours on a charge. The rechargeable battery block mounts on the wheel hub so it doesn't change the balance of the wheel. All parts are water and shock resistant. Radlicht has been tested over and over in rain and snow as well as in the city and forest to make certain that it survives any weather conditions.

Radlicht fits 20” and larger bike wheels with spokes. It is possible to install two Radlicht sets on one wheel in order to increase illumination or to mix two Radlicht of different colors on a single wheel.
Hubs: Maximum hub diameter is 60mm (2.5 inches).

Radlicht does not fit wheels without spokes.
Installation and setup take about 15 minutes and it is much easier if you remove the wheel from the bike. Simply connect the tubes to the spokes of your wheel and strap them together. Our Web site (http://radlicht.com/installation-manual) has step-by-step pictures to show you how to do it.
What's the money for?
The current Radlicht is a prototype design. We need to incorporate further design elements to get Radlicht to a production ready status; i.e. to a place where it can be used by everyone. The battery holding device is an initial design. We have developed over 10 different colors and double color tube designs that we are making available as a “Thank You” to our Kickstarter supporters. But we need your help to begin mass production and to make night time bike riding both fun and bright.
If funds remain, we will use them to build the working capital necessary for manufacturing the first production of Radlicht Bike Lighting Systems.

How Radlicht was born?
Our first prototype was just wires with lamps connected to the wheel. In the video Invention of Radlicht we have showed the soldering process, connection, and our test samples of different colors which backers will be able to get as a reward.

From the very beginning we have started with use of the battery block with 3 AAA rechargeable batteries. For our Kickstarter campaign we have changed it to the sealed USB rechargeable block that is much more practicable and convenient to use.
At the moment we have made more than 100 samples. And have made more than 1000+ hours testing.
Technical details of our latest prototype:
Tubes material: plastic;
LED: green, red, orange, white, pink, blue colors, 3V, 3 mm diameter;
battery block on prototype: 3 AAA rechargeable battery 1.2V 1100 mAh
For our last prototype we use plastic *(Polypropylene) tubes. Polypropylene is tough and flexible, reasonably economical plastic. Polypropylene has good resistance to fatigue, and it has a melting point of 171 °C (340 °F).
Polypropylene is recyclable!
The tube is filled with a purified gas mixture, and the gas ionized by lights between the ends of the sealed tube. Pure neon gas is used to produce only about a third of the colors. The greatest number of colors is produced by filling with another inert gases (for example, argon).
Our production plan and schedule
- December (3rd): Kickstarter Launch
- December: Agreements with manufacturing partners "CAC Polywarm" are finalized, all components will be assembled in Europe.
- December: Tools and components are ordered. T-Shirts printed. Postcards sending.
- January: Manufacturing begins.
- February/March: Testing and Shipping of first orders. T-Shirts delivery.
- April: Main shipping.
- May: All Kickstarter orders finalized.
Risks and challenges
*Supply chain delays. In production of Radliht many different parts are being used. Sometimes we are out of certain elements and have to wait for delivery, sometimes we need to redesign certain parts or create an alternative part. All this can slightly impact delivery schedule.
