About this project
Our 5-part Radio Dreaming adventure whisks you off to limestone hills, fragile boglands and honeycombe caves to encounter an inspirational mythology of voices, sounds, dreams and traditional Irish music. Themed episodes will spark fresh curiosity leaving you eager to go out and dream your own homeplaces alive.
We believe Art is for everyone. Radio is an exciting medium that reaches people in their own homes or cars, in cities, small towns or very rural settings. The aim of Radio Dreaming is to inspire others to share their own stories and perspectives and connect with their own homeplaces in new ways.
Starting in April, we will launch Radio Dreaming on radio stations around the globe simultaneously taking it back to its source at Marble Arch Caves Global Geopark in Éire/Northern Ireland through our Radio Dreaming Pod Tour. Our custom made “diddyvan” houses a mobile, solar-powered listening and recording suite, collaborative drawing studio and a Place Dreamer Tool-Kit to share with visitors. We will roll up at village greens, isolated farms and city centres, key Geopark sites and visitor centres for people to climb aboard to listen, dream and draw.
Look for broadcasts on your community radio station or request them! If you live in the Geopark we’d love for you to stop by the Place Dreamer Pod to share a cup of tea, have a listen to Radio Dreaming and take a peek at the novel Place Dreamer Tool-Kit stowed in the cannily designed back hatch area of the Pod.
WHAT IS RADIO DREAMING?
Dreaming draws on the rich experiences of our 40 day research trip to
the cross-border Marble Arch Caves Geopark. Starring characters like
Wild Bumble Bees, Rushing Rivers, The Starry Saxifrage, Margaret
Gallagher and her Traditional Thatched Cottage, Cave Rescue Specialist
Les Brown and the Buskers of Beleek, Radio Dreaming opens windows into other worlds. Expect to find new ways to discover hidden dreams and meanings within a landscape.
Building on our successful Radio Dreaming pilot broadcast, we have woven hundreds of DREAMING PLACE field recordings, interviews and soundscapes to create four new exciting episodes. The complete radio series explores edible landscapes, wild dreams, local traditions, myths of land and water, geology of limestone landscapes, tools for Dreaming Place, self-sufficiency and off-grid dreaming.
Why Community Radio?
With its powerful agency, radio is a potent place for experimentation, innovation and communication in the Arts. Radio Dreaming will be broadcast on art and community radio stations, as they serve specific and geographic communities and broadcast content that is relevant to local, specific audiences often overlooked by commercial, mass-media. We support stations that are operated, owned, and influenced by the communities they serve, for the people by the people.
Help us get Radio Dreaming on your favorite community radio station!
If you’d like Radio Dreaming to air on your local community radio station, contact us and ask your station to play the show. We’ll make every effort to get the series to air in your community.
Feedback + Kudos for Radio Dreaming

RADIO DREAMING PLACE-DREAMER POD TOUR
Our wee Place-Dreamer Pod is a micro-caravan and solar-powered listening space, recording booth and drawing studio custom made by Nigel Gurney of Diddyvans Teardrop Trailers. Inside the wood and aluminium pod is a comfy space for us to host visitors. Under the rear hatch is a specially designed storage space displaying our tool-kit of ideas for Dreaming Place.
little Pod will likely attract a fair bit of attention, which is fine
by us. During the Radio Dreaming Tour we’ll be sharing Radio Dreaming
episodes and drawings as well as collecting and recording new stories,
music and sounds and making new collaborative drawings for future
viewing in installations and on our website.
Host the Place-Dreamer Pod
If you live in the Marble Arch Cave Geopark area and would like the Place-Dreamer Pod to come to your community for a visit during our tour, please drop us a line!
We’ve been working on Radio Dreaming for nearly two years, since the DREAMING PLACE research trip that we took to Marble Arch Caves Geopark in Summer 2011.
We approach Radio as contemporary artists working in the fields of art, ecology and sound, so we bring a unique perspective, different from others working in sound or radio-based careers. We have thousands of hours of experience audio recording, editing, as well as project creation, management and promotion. We are highly motivated and quite simply love what we do. We are passionate about nature, culture, technology, people, places and things and strive to create projects that challenge and engage. Our arts practice integrates ancient technologies and time-tested traditions with novel techniques and technology to reconnect us with places and to help us realize that we are actually embedded within the ecology around us at any given location.
We’ve produced multiple sound works and installations. The illustrated radio journey, “How Far From Home Are We” sprung from a journey to Helsinki by land and sea and has resulted in a series of international broadcasts and exhibitions. The experience and momentum from these works puts us in a position to be successful with our current and much larger project, Radio Dreaming.
ANNA AND CLAIRE: A COLLABORATION
Anna and Claire’s imaginative and adventurous international collaboration began in 2007 while studying on the MA Arts and Ecology course at Dartington College of Arts in Devon, England. When they finished their studies and Claire returned to her native New Mexico, they promised to meet up again, but this time in Ireland. Together they continue to make audio journeys, radio broadcasts, drawings, sculptural installations and performative events. Working from their contrasting home places, Claire and Anna’s collaboration transcends the miles through internet technologies. Their collaborative works have been shown in traditional art venues and galleries as well as libraries, universities, museum bookshops, cafes, visitor centers, theatres, aired on radio stations and experienced on moorlands, trails, city bridges and even been taken out for walks. Dreaming Place, The Exchange, If you’d like to..., How far from Home are we?and now Radio Dreaming are projects in which people, places, creatures and things come together to Dream Place as the future unfolds. HOW CAN YOU HELP?
We have already dedicated thousands of unpaid hours to this project - planning, collecting footage, storyboarding, scripting, editing, promoting and blogging. This is our final push to bring all our hard work to fruition by launching Radio Dreaming out into the world. We work online together 90% of the time, but now we need donations to cover the costs of the Radio Dreaming Launch and Place-Dreamer Pod Tour.
How much are we asking for?
We only need £3,184 / $4815 / €3,654 to make our project happen! Our research trip to Marble Arch Caves was Lottery funded through an Arts Council England Grant for our original DREAMING PLACE journey to Marble Arch Caves Geopark in 2011. In December 2012, Radio Dreaming was given a very generous donation of £5,000 and Nigel Gurney of Diddyvans Teardrop Trailers has given us a £500 discount on the Pod that he is building for us. We have a £300 bursary from Fermanagh District Council (N.Ireland) and we have support in-kind from Marble Arch Caves Geopak. Your generous support will help to close the remaining budget gap and enable this project to go forward!
WHAT WILL YOU GET FOR SUPPORTING OUR PROJECT?
For those of you that provide financial support for Radio Dreaming, (THANK YOU!) we have a fleet of fun REWARDS designated in the sidebar. Among them, original, hand-drawn Dream Cloud Postcards sent directly from Marble Arch Caves Geopark to you or the person of your choice as the Place-Dreamer Pod Tour unfolds, as well as exclusive online Radio Dreaming links, prints of our collaborative drawings and much more! With your support, Radio Dreaming will begin airing in April and you’ll be able to listen to all five Radio Dreaming Episodes on a community radio station near you! Please get in touch with us to request Radio Dreaming on your local radio station. If you live in or near the Marble Arch Caves Geopark, you could request a personal visit from the Place-Dreamer Pod! And of course you also have the warm feeling for helping two motivated, hard working, visionary artists!
Become a Radio Dreaming backer and receive original Dream Cloud Postcards drawn especially for you and sent during our Radio Dreaming Pod Tour!
Or receive limited edition Glycee prints of our Dreaming Place collaborative drawings!
Risks and challenges
Among our biggest challenges will be to get the Radio Dreaming series out onto as many radio stations as possible. Communicating and negotiating scheduling with each new radio station can be time-consuming work, however we have good connections to other stations through the community radio stations that we are already working with to help overcome this challenge.
During our Radio Dreaming Place-Dreamer Pod Tour, we’ll be wild camping, in hilly border country without ready access to basic services, including water and loos. Mobile coverage is patchy in the Geopark, so arranging appointments and interviews will be harder than at home. Rain will likely be one of our biggest challenges, as it may deter visitors. Our pod carries two batteries, so we can make the most of any sunshine. If we run out of solar power, we will need to search out campsites or other locations to plug in and charge up from the grid. This will take additional time and may incur additional expenses. We are minimising the risks by being well prepared. We have friends and contacts and a degree of insiders’ knowledge of water sources, camp spots and public facilities.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
