About

I've thought about getting serious in the studio again ever since Hurricane Katrina, when I lost probably hundreds of hours of demo tapes, lyrics and songs as well as musical instruments. Used to be I would spend a few hours a week, minimum, in my home studio laying down everything from song ideas to pretty good sounding demos - but even though I've now rebuilt the setup to go into all that again, it just gets harder and harder to carve out the time to make it happen. But honestly, it needs to happen -- and I think with some help from a few local friends (and maybe some remote help as well, hint, hint) I can put together a significant set of music that a lot of people might find worth hearing, and should also help kick start the band I've always wanted to form - an organic, friend-oriented ensemble that is versatile enough to play anything, loose enough to play everything and focused enough to play it well. The goal, ultimately, is to play for your friends, because they make the best audience, after all; and to engage both the audience and the band in an experience, not necessarily life-altering, but at least memorable. I'm hoping there is enough interest in hearing such a thing to get this thing done this year.

Risks and challenges

I think once we have the funding in order, it will be a pretty simple process getting the project done. The variables, as always with a recording project, are the availability of the studio and any musicians, plus the actual time needed to make sure things get done right. My plan at this point is to use only a couple of "extra" musicians and do most of the overdubs my self - but that may change. It really depends on the songs I decide to use. And THAT plan is to record between 15-20 songs and then cull out the best 12-15 for inclusion on the CD. It may be that I'll distribute some rough mixes to all the sponsors and get feedback on what should be included. We'll see.

All that being said, I want to try and make this project happen using local resources: I'm looking to work with Jesse Poole of Compound Digital Studios here in Natchitoches, Erin Bailey of La Shutterbug Photography out of Coushatta, Matt Bailey of Small Time Productions out of Shreveport and some of the many talented musician friends from here, there and elsewhere in the general ArkLaTex region. I've got a lot of options there, that's for sure.
