About this project
There's a special story behind these suits! It all started with a truly adventurous friendship between my grandfather, Robert 'Bob' Bernard and ski racing buddies Norma & Joe Lausmann. Norma began designing and hand sewing neon ski racing suits in the early 80s. She hand picked psychedelic prints and created a style never before seen on the mountain. The trio raced into their 80s around the world, competing in Downhill and Slalom Masters Ski Races - often winning Gold, Silver and Bronze in their age class.
The ski suits took on a new life when I (grand-daughter to Bob Bernard) got my hands on the them. I found that they were as big a hit off the ski slopes as they were on, at events like Coachella, Burning Man and Daybreaker!! The quality of Norma's suits is better than any unitard I have ever worn. They've lasted generations and proved to be both functional and fabulous.
Fast forward 35 years... Racysuits is now a budding brand ready for its first large production! Exploring more places than ever before - ski slopes, beaches, parties and festivals - all around the world. From the snow covered slopes of Montreal and California to the beaches of Australia and Mexico, to parties in New York City and the Nevada desert, Racysuits is ready to take on the world!
Starting with Norma's ski suit design has allowed us to recreate a one piece suit that embodies the functionality and durability of a professional ski suit. The ergonomic pattern is designed to provide you with increased flexibility and range of motion. Racysuits can support your every move, whether you're racing down a mountain or getting down on the dance floor!
After a year of testing, producing samples, and getting customer feedback we've added a few NEW FEATURES!
The ZIPPERS on the arms and the legs make fore easy dressing.
There are TWO NEW POCKETS that will fit your phone (even the big iPhone 6), your ski pass, credit cards and any other essential items. One pocket on your left arm and one hidden breast pocket for your secret treasures.
We will emphasize the 2 LAYERS again and again! Most one piece spandex suits are made with a thin layer of material, revealing everything . . . including the burrito you ate for lunch. Our 2 layer suits give you the ultimate body smoothing support making sure your neon booty is looking extra fabulous at all times.
Our print selection is inspired by some of the very first Racysuits hand sewn by Norma. We've worked to create a new collection that will satisfy all of your neon dreams.
Our custom prints will be digitally printed on a blend of Poly/Elastane fabric. The medium weight compression shape-wear fabric is body smoothing and 4-way stretch. This blend of fabric retains its shape and color, as well as being UV resistant and efficiently absorbing sweat.
The lining fabric that is in contact with your skin is carefully selected. We chose an elastane blend fabric that is soft to the skin, breathable and moisture wicking - keeping you dry and warm! Poly blend fabrics are also stain and odor resistant, helping you stay fresh through multiple wears.
Below are our 3 new prints that'll be produced if this Kickstarter is successful. If you choose a Racysuits Unitard Reward you will get to select one of the following designs!
Our 4-way stretch fully lined suits are extremely forgiving, providing a body smoothing effect that is flattering on all body shapes. They're designed to be tight and hug your body, creating an aerodynamic design similar to professional downhill ski racing suits. We have added two new sizes to our collection now offering XXS, XS, S, M, L, XL, XXL. Thanks to 4way stretch materials our suits fit a wide range of body types!
We're dedicated to keeping our production in the USA. The best part is we'll be able to visit our factory throughout the production process and monitor quality every step of the way. We've also done small batch test runs with our New York factories. You can see the outcome of these on our website. Having pre-existing relationships and experience with our factories is incredibly helpful. This Kickstarter production run won't be a guinea pig - we've already worked out the the kinks! Special thanks to Maker's Row for creating a community of Makers and Manufactures helping us bring production back to the USA.
If we're lucky enough to reach our pledge goal in August (crossing our fingers, toes and eyes) we'll email each pledger and ask for sizes, prints and shipping info. All rewards will ship as soon as we receive them. Be sure to check your rewards delivery date for an ETA.
This is a very exciting time in my life. I'm lucky enough to be working on a project that I'm incredibly passionate about - rediscovering the zest for life of generations before me. The best part about this project is the community and family behind it.
My grandfather met Norma and Joe Lausmann when he first joined the USSA Far West Masters Ski Racing Association. Their friendship took them on trips around the world, racing in competitions globally. Bob Bernard , Norma and Joe Lausmann are legendary members of the Tahoe ski community. In the 1980's they spearhead the full time adult training program at Squaw Valley and Alpine Meadows that still continues to this day. Bob Bernard was also one of the founding members of the Far West Master Junior Scholarship Program that supports deserving junior racers.
He held community positions such as Chairman in the Far West Devision, National Masters Chairman and USSA representative to FIS Masters Committee. He also spearheaded the Spyder Masters Alpine Team along with the founder of Spyder Active Sports, David Jacobs.
Bob Bernard's enthusiasm and commitment to the ski community on a national and international level has landed him a nomination to become an honored member of the U.S. Ski & Snowboard Hall of Fame (application pending).
None of this would be possible without the support and encouragement from Norma Lausmann, now 93. She remembers every suit she ever made, every race she ever won, and attributes her speed and success to her favorite Racysuit - black with neon pink polka dots.
Wearing Racysuits brings this lifestyle back. Imagine all of the things you love best in life, the acts, the motions, the adventures, and the people that bring you the most joy in life. Now, throw a Racysuit into the mix and tell me life didn’t just get a lot more fun!
Building Racysuits is going to take a lot of hard work but the payoff is more than worth it. Seeing people of all ages skiing, surfing, dancing, and playing in Racysuits around the world is the best reward there is! I flip out every time I see a customer share a Racysuits photo.
Thank you again for all your support! I look forward to decking you out in spandex ;)
Thank you to everyone who supported this campaign. Music by Joakim Karud, photography contributions by James Thompson, Christian Torres & Mike Michlin. Video Production & Editing by Ryan Homsy & Djordje Radovanovic.
Risks and challenges
We know with any project there are many moving pieces which bring risks and challenges. We're starting this Kickstarter with our feet already wet. Heck we've already dove all the way in! We've completed a small production run which is available on our website. Thanks to our pre-existing relationships with our manufacturers we've spent the last year testing and improving our design and optimizing our process.
We work with local companies so we can monitor the quality of production every step of the way.
Timing is always a challenge. If we're successfully funded we'll work diligently to get your orders into production. We'll make it our mission in life to deliver your suit on time and ensure it blows your mind!
We promise to keep everyone informed as our production process gets underway and plan for a timely delivery in January.
In the meantime we suggest you plan your ski trips, do some squats, and practice your dance moves. Let's get Racysuits ready!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
