About

Rats! We didn't meet our goal. Not to worry... the adventure is far from over. You can keep pace with Scott, Spoon, and Rabbittown Press by following their work on Etsy, Instagram, and online at www.rabbittown.press.

To be continued...

Augment your D20 tabletop role-playing experience with a handmade, letterpress-printed book for your spells and magical incantations!

With your help, I am going to raise enough funds to support the design and production of a handmade, letterpress printed spellbook. This book will be the perfect companion to every spellcaster's kit. Beautifully made with durable methods and materials, it will contain sixty pages of content including empty spell templates, spell lists, spell trackers, and ancient information pertaining to the various schools of magic.

About the Name

I searched my imagination long and far for the perfect name for this book. Early prototypes bore the name "Book of Spells." But whereas that could be confused with another riveting experience, the "Book of Smells," I've decided on something much simpler... Spellbook!

Sixty Pages for your Spellcasting Content

Here's what you can expect in the interior:

  • Pages 1, 2, 3
Title Page, ownership information (i.e.: "this spellbook belongs to ...")

  • Page 4
Blank page for a drawing or epigraph

  • Page 5
A list for tracking your spell slots

  • Page 6, 7, 8
A list with forty spaces for your spells. Each list item will reference a page in the spellbook and include a spot to mark the spell as prepared, as well as space for listing required components

  • Pages 9 through 49
Forty empty spell templates (one per page). Each template is bordered by an ornate frame and laid with rules for easy writing. Headers mark areas for entering component, duration, range, and casting information.

  • Pages 50 through 59
Nine pages of skillfully typeset content pertaining to the eight schools of magic

  • Page 60
Colophon. Includes printing and edition information.

Raising the Funds to Make this Dream a Reality

I've set my sights on $2,000 to fund this project. This amount will cover the costs of paper and book making supplies, machine maintenance fees, and administrative duties (project management, book keeping, packing, labeling, shipping). Any funds raised above this amount will allow the project to source higher quality paper and materials, expedite manufacturing processes, and provide other printed gifts to project backers.

Stretch Goals

  • $2,500 — Free "Bit of Fleece" included with all pledges!

  • $4,000 — Choice of paper stock color for all softcover Spell Books

  • $7,000 — Free 5-pack of letterpress printed character tents for all Silver and Gold pledges!

Scott McAllister, the Printer

Scott has been involved in the fields of design, fine arts, and print making for nearly a decade. His ability to create compelling visual experiences using simple compositions, expert typography, and whimsical illustrations is well regarded by his peers. This Kickstarter marks his first foray into the world of crowdfunding. If all goes well, he hopes to use this project as a launching point for designing and printing other Dungeons and Dragons related materials.

 Rabbittown Press, the Print Shop

Project rewards will be printed at Rabbittown Press, a boutique letterpress print shop located in Fredericton, New Brunswick, Canada. The shop houses four historic printing machines, a selection of wooden and metal type, and hot-lead casting machines, all housed in a century-old stable. You can read more about Rabbittown Press here.

Spoon, the Spokeself

Project updates, comedic relief, and diversionary commentary will be provided by Spoon, a roguish rabble-rouser and Scott's current Dungeons and Dragons character. If you haven't met her already, look a little closer... she's hiding in plain sight.

How It's Made

The black art of letterpress printing is a cherished, multidisciplinary practice of centuries gone by. It is one of the oldest forms of printing, having been invented by Johannes Gutenberg in the fifteenth-century. Raised letters, often made in wood or lead, transfer ink onto paper by means of an impression.

Letterpress printing peaked in popularity sometime within the last one-hundred years. Newer printing methods like digital and offset printing have largely replaced its commercial applications. Today, it use is largely relegated to the domain of specialty shops and print makers like yours truly. Owning one of these books is like owning a piece of history!

Progress So Far

I've put in a significant amount of love and hard work just to get to the stage this project is at today. Now there's plenty more to be done and I need your support to get onto those next stages! I'm very excited to have the chance to make these books a reality. Let's do this together!

Risks and challenges

The final product may not look exactly as shown. Complications during the printing process could result in print-time decisions that change the outcome. Rest assured, my highest standards of production will be maintained. I will never ever ever make a change that reduces the book's quality. In the event that such a complication arises, backers can expect to be informed via project updates.

Launching this Kickstarter is simultaneously exciting and terrifying. I've done my best to plan everything up front so the production processes run smoothly. But please note: anything could happen! I could get sick, I could lose an eye, I could turn into a dog! I'm rooting for the best, though. I hope you'll join me along for this inspiring adventure!
