Having backed a number of projects over the last few years, we tried to tailor our rewards to be things that we would be excited about-- cool stuff for reasonable pledges. We hope you agree!
THE SHORT VERSION
We're trying to make a unique, microbudget psychological thriller/horror feature film and give you cool incentives for helping out. No zombies, no vampires, no redneck cannibals, no demons, no ghosts, no exorcisms, no magical teenagers, no "grindhouse" posturing. This is not a sequel, remake, or adaptation of anything else. And we want you to get your money's worth: SD downloads are available from $5, DVDs from $20. Let's make some intelligent genre cinema together!
THE LONG VERSION: WHO ARE WE AND WHAT ARE WE DOING?
We are an independent film production collective based out of Chicago. We started out as Rabbit Room Productions, and made our first short film, "TAPE," in early 2012. We are dedicated to creating interesting, unique films and strive for intelligence, reverence, and subtlety in genre cinema that's largely become shrill and affected. We're true believers. We believe that your attention is a truly priceless commodity, and we're grateful for every second you spend with us.
Now we need your help as we are preparing to produce our most ambitious project yet.
A feature film entitled Still. The concept behind Still has been kicking around writer/director Jason Coffman's head for the better part of a decade, and it is finally coming together on the page and-- hopefully before too long!-- in front of the cameras.
THE SHORT VERSION
Still is sort of like La Jetée meets Let's Scare Jessica to Death. You know you want to see that.
THE LONG VERSION
Still is the story of a young woman named Alice, who lives with her cousin and his girlfriend in Chicago. Alice finds a great new job, but one night she goes back into the office with a coworker and the two women are attacked, having seemingly stumbled upon a robbery in progress.
Alice is hospitalized, and when she wakes she discovers that she has an extraordinarily rare condition: akinetopsia, or "motion blindness." The part of her brain that processes motion has been damaged, even though the rest of her senses function normally. In addition to the difficulty of adjusting to life with a new kind of perception, Alice has to deal with threats both internal (strange dreams) and external (a strange figure following her). Why is she having these nightmares? Will she remember what really happened in the office the night of the attack? Who is following her, and why?
Still will draw heavily from some of our favorite female-centered psychological horror films of the 1970s (such as Season of the Witch, Let's Scare Jessica to Death, Neither the Sea Nor the Sand, etc.) and focus on character first and foremost. The look of the film will borrow everything from 1970s giallo to film noir and the grainy 16mm low-budget American genre (and/or French New Wave) films of the 1960s to the latest high-resolution digital photography.
We are film fans. We are horror fans. We want to see something different from the glut of cookie-cutter monsters and plots that have taken over the genre. No zombies, no vampires, no werewolves, no backwoods killers, no elaborate death traps, no teenagers who wake up one day to find they have supernatural powers and have to save the world. This will be a unique viewing experience, and we can't wait to share it with you.
One of the most important lessons Kickstarter has taught us is to figure in the cost of incentives, and there's a great post from the producers of Star Command explaining how their funds were split between reward costs, Kickstarter and Amazon fees, and actual funds received. It's a tricky balance to provide worthwhile rewards and still end up with enough funds to actually do what you wanted to do in the first place!
Everyone knows making movies is insanely expensive, but we've managed to make all of our stuff so far with severely limited financial resources. We think our results speak for themselves and we're proud of what we've managed to do with microbudget (nanobudget?) filmmaking, but now we want to take things to the next level. If you liked what we achieved with "TAPE", "The Secret Cinema" and "The Gamma-Ray Man" on just a few hundred bucks, wait until you see what we can do with a few thousand.
That said, we think we've got a good balance of our goal earmarked for covering expenses tied to the campaign and leaving enough for us to do some great things on what is still a comparatively tiny budget. Every extra dollar we make over our goal goes directly toward improving the finished product and helping get it out to another festival. We look forward to the challenge of creating something great and sharing it with all of you.
In order to complete the film, we need to raise some funds to rent a few locations and/or studio space for a few key scenes. Additionally, we need funds to get software to help us perform color grading and correction before calling it done and sending it out to festivals for consideration. There's a lot that we can do--and have already done!--on our own, but finishing these last few things will require your help.
And of course, if we don't raise the whole goal amount, you aren't charged anything and we don't get a penny. Ouch.
WHAT DO *I* GET OUT OF THIS?
Well, beyond our eternal gratitude and the fact that you helped fund the first feature film ever made that deals with akinetopsia (two pretty sweet intangibles if we do say so ourselves), you can get all sorts of cool stuff! All backers who pledge at least $10 will get early streaming access to the finished film, and things start to get really interesting at $15 and above: handmade DVDs of our previous short films ("TAPE," "The Secret Cinema," "Una Chiave..." & "The Gamma-Ray Man"), film logo shirts, a backers-only DVD of the film with our previous shorts as extras, a limited edition double CDr by Cinchel with hand-painted art, a limited edition VHS copy of our short film "TAPE," and much more!
SO WHAT'S THE PLAN?
The plan is to raise funds through this Kickstarter, line up the remaining locations and services we need, and complete principal photography by late December or early January. After that, we move into final editing and post-production, with an eye toward being finished with the film in time to submit to 2014 festivals and deliver the completed film to backers (in some format) by March 2014.
It's a hell of a lot of work on a daunting schedule. We know. And we're really, really excited about taking it on. This is a dream project for us, and it's one that could never get made in the mainstream studio system. Help us create something truly unique, and hopefully we'll be able to bring you more of this kind of story in the future!
HOW ABOUT STRETCH GOALS?
Due to the fact that we're going to be putting every penny toward making the film better and paying for festival fees, our plan is to keep "stretch goals" to a minimum. But we do have *one* in mind:
At $10,000 we will have a special sneak preview screening in Chicago once the film is complete, and all backers over $25 will get in along with one guest for no charge! Out-of-towners will need to make their own arrangements to come to the show, of course, but if you can get here backers will get first call on tickets. Obviously the venue and such will be determined later, but the plan is to get as many of the people who made the film and as many of the people who helped fund the film in one room at the same time!
Jason Coffman: Back in 2002 (or 2003?), I was reading The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat, a collection of writings by Oliver Sacks. In one of the chapters was a footnote about a person who had suffered an injury that left them with motion blindness. The basic storyline (and title) of Still immediately sprang to mind: a young woman living in a new city, with a new job, becomes afflicted with this strange disorder. After that, though, other projects came and went, but Still continued simmering in the back of my mind.
I wrote a screenplay for a short film version of Still in 2010, but it didn't feel quite ready. After a few more years, including making four short films between March 2012 and March 2013 and generating ideas for many more projects, Still finally began to take a final, concrete shape. Details came into focus. Characters made their home in this story.
Our aim with Still is to create something interesting and unique. We're anxious to bring this story to the screen, and hope you'll be as excited as we are about making this happen!

Risks and challenges
Making even the most modest short film is an insane nightmare of complications, collapses, and compromises. Coordinating the schedules of a cast and crew is always difficult, and keeping all those plates spinning long enough to see a film to completion is a difficult task. There is always the possibility of scheduling changes and obstacles to shooting, and it's the intrepid filmmaker's task to take each one as they come and keep moving.
With each of our previous projects, we have been thrown a new set of challenges. Whether these are during pre-production (a location falls through), production (an actor suddenly becoming unavailable) or in post-production (completely unusable on-location sound), we have always dealt with these obstacles quickly, creatively and effectively. Though things didn't always go as planned, the final results have been well received by audiences.
