Decorate your wall with a unique scalemail banner, hand-woven to your custom design.
We're celebrating the launch of our Scalemail Inlay Designer v2 by offering you the chance to have a custom banner woven out of metal scales. With eighteen colours, four banner sizes, and the use of our designer, you can create a truly unique piece of metal art to display on your wall.
Each banner is woven out of anodised aluminium scales and joined with steel split rings. A limited number of plastic scale options are also available.
The scales come in various colours, each of which has at least one of the following texture options:
- Untextured (All plastic) - Light surface brush, or smooth
- Brushed - Dark 15° diagonal brush effect
- Mirror - Smooth, polished, reflective surface
Each scale is linked diagonally with two split rings to create the overlapping weave. Each edge scale is then stabilised to ensure there are no errant scales sticking out.
Designing scalemail banners has never been easier thanks to our Scalemail Designer tool. The designer provides a simple interface for creating your own custom patterns from scratch, or based upon a source image.
The designer is freely available for anyone to use, and we encourage you to browse through the gallery of designs and give making your own design a try.

While it is currently in beta there are only a handful of features to implement and bugs to correct, which will be the prime focus during the time between launching the Kickstarter and sending out backer surveys.
There are several templates available for you to use as a starting point, with common shapes in each of the tier sizes.
There are 18 colours available to create your pattern from, with brushed, mirror, and plastic scales available too. From left to right, the colours as pictured are:
- Aluminium (Brushed, Mirror)
- Copper (Mirror)
- Gold (Brushed, Mirror)
- Plastic (Clear, Black, Glow-in-the-dark)
Be aware that the glow-in-the-dark scales are more expensive than any other colour, and as such will count as two scales each toward your total scale limit.
There are some design considerations you will need to take into account when making a pattern:
- The top row of the pattern should be flat with either a diagonal or straight edge going down. Any horizontal edges below the top row will hang limp.
- A pattern cannot contain any holes, as this will cause the scales below the hole to hang limp. Consider using clear plastic scales if a hole is needed, though the linking rings will show through.
- Don't make ridiculously thin or narrow patterns. It won't hang correctly and you won't be happy.
More information on using the designer is available via the 'Help' button within the designer, and on the Lair of the Raven YouTube channel.
Each banner comes with a painted wooden hanging bar which you can mount to your wall, along with an appropriate amount of mounting hooks for your wall based on the size of the banner.
To best compliment each banner, the hanging bars are available in a range of colours with either brass or silver hooks:
Also included are an appropriate number of tension bars to keep your banner from curling up. These wires are optional if you prefer your scales to furl naturally, and can be moved and adjusted as you desire.
When considering where to mount your banner, we strongly recommend ensuring that it will be securely fixed to the wall - especially on plasterboard or other hollow wall materials. Refer to the estimated weight and dimensions in the scalemail designer!
There are four tiers of wall banner on offer, as well as lower reward tiers for backers who simply want to support the inlay designer.
Every banner tier comes with a timelapse video of the assembly process, which will be available on the Lair of the Raven YouTube channel shortly after it has been shipped out to you. If you would prefer to not have your design timelapsed you can opt out in the backer survey.
All the banner and diamond tiers come fully assembled and ready to hang with a hanging bar, hooks, and tension bars!
Need a handful more scales to complete your design? Add 10 more scales for £5 - simply increase your pledge by £5 for every 10 scales that you require.
At the basic level we will only be offering hanging bars in black, gold, silver, and white. When the project reaches the £5000 mark we will extend the paint options for all banner tier backers.
There are limited options for add-ons and stretch goals, however if you have an idea for something you would like to see feel free to drop us a message.
Postage within the United Kingdom and the European Union is included within the cost of each tier.
For countries beyond the European Union all physical tiers will incur an additional postage cost. Due to the size and weight of the large and extra large banners, they are not currently offered to countries outside of the European Union.
If your country is not included in our shipping areas, please contact us so that we can look into how much it will cost to ship to your country.
If you are outside of the European Union and want to receive a large or extra large baner, please contact us for information on shipping costs.
Any import duty fees or taxes that are applicable to your country are your responsibility to pay.

The scalemail banners project is the perfect way for us to celebrate the launch of the Scalemail Inlay Designer version two, and at the same time recoup some of our time and resources spent on making it.
Importing scalemail materials is expensive, so the only way to do it cost-effectively is to order a large quantity in one go.
We have been supporting ourselves throughout this process, including buying the initial scalemail materials and resources. If we meet our Kickstarter goal we will be able to recoup those costs and have a little left over to work on our next project.
After the banners project is complete we fully intend to run more projects using crowd funding sources, as well as continuing to produce freely available content.
