About

LIVE TABLETOP ROLEPLAYING OPEN TO EVERYONE

The Open Game Master is a live tabletop roleplaying show where everyone can watch and play!

Watch the adventure unfold as teams of players step into the game and pit their characters against fearsome foes. Then create your own character and step into the fold alongside fellow viewers!

Join me live on Friday to see how the games will work!

I'll be running a game session on Friday the 29th of September, at 18:00, answering all of your questions, and running two live play sessions.

If you want to play in the sessions sign up now on the Open Game Master website.

This is not your ordinary livestreaming show! This is a game where you can be the adventurer, and you can be part of the action!

Broadcast live on Twitch, players both new and old can come together in parties of up to six, playing in hour-long slots with several slots played each stream session.

When chosen, players connect directly with the Open Game Master via Discord and Roll20, and are taken into the game world. The obstacles, traps, and hazards that face the players are unknown, and there are sure to be many seeking to prevent passage deeper into the game. Whether you are playing or watching, you are sure to be in for a wild ride.

Each slot is only one hour long and so will focus around a few shorter encounters, or one large encounter. An encounter could see you fighting off horrific monsters, navigating treacherous paths, or dealing with fragile alliances.

Live Game Slot Demonstration

Want to see what a typical game slot of the Open Game Master will be like? Here's the very first hour-long test session I ran live!

A lot of things have been improved since the test, however there is still a lot that can be done with your help!

Initially the Open Game Master is running a custom campaign using Dungeons & Dragons 5th Edition. Not only is it a system I am comfortable with, it also presents a solid entry point for those unfamiliar with tabletop roleplaying games.

After the Open Game Master has been established, one-off convention style games in a range of systems will be offered in slots, alongside the continuing D&D 5e game.

What's the D&D 5e game about?

Far to the east of the Sword Coast lies an ancient mountain, shrouded in a cloak of eternal mist. Rumour has it that atop that ancient peak is an artefact that can grant its wielder wealth beyond measure, the power to topple kingdoms, and grant the wishes of its master.

You have ventured far from home to the Vale of Eternal Mist in search of this artefact, that you might use its power.

Dare you step into the mist? What dangers await you within that ever-shrouded labyrinth? You must find the courage to pass into the fog and face your fate.

Check out the Campaign Setting and Character Creation Guidelines for more information!

My name is Anthony 'Raven' Edmonds. I have been playing tabletop roleplaying games for over ten years, and fantasy computer games such as Baldur's Gate and Diablo long before that.

I have run many systems over the years, such as: Amber DRPG, Age of Rebellion, Star Trek TNG TRPG, Pathfinder, Dungeons & Dragons, and custom games. As a player, there are too many games both big and small to even start to list!

Most of my games are self-written, with short, long, and convention game mastering under my belt. One of my sandbox games has been running weekly for over two years!

As a game master I like to ensure that:

  • Everyone gets their turn
  • Players can take their own path
  • There is little Player vs Player conflict
  • There is more than one way to win

Interested in taking part? Everyone is welcome to join the games and become part of the adventure! See everything you need to know about creating your character, what you need to play, and how to join your fellow players live in the games on Twitch.

Utilising freely available software it is possible for anyone in the world to play in game sessions.

The entry requirements have been kept as low as possible, with only a very basic list of needs for you to fulfil – most of which you either already have or are free!

  • An internet connection
  • Roll20 account (free)
  • Discord account (free)
  • Headphones
  • Microphone
  • At least 1 hour to play!

When you sign up you will be given a link to your character sheet on Google Drive, that way we can both see your character sheet. You are responsible for maintaining your character sheet, so make sure you keep it up to date as you play. The link to your character sheet is private, so make sure you keep it safe. If you lose your link, just ask for a new one.

Initially we will only be using races and classes from the Player's Handbook. If you don't have a PHB, you can use the rules from the 5th Edition SRD for free!

Anyone will be able to watch the games being played on Twitch, and anyone can sign up to play!

  • Read the setting and creation guide
  • Join the Open Game Master Discord
  • Post in the #Signups channel
  • Get a sheet and create your character
  • Join the 'Ready to Play' voice channel

There will be several types of slot available to play in, some of which will be for inexperienced players, players without characters, or characters of a certain level range.

Using my own resources I have managed to make it this far, however there are a few things I need to launch the Open Game Master in the best state possible.

With your backing I can perform several improvements to the show right off the bat.

The base £500 goal will allow me to improve the basic physical setup, such as a more stable desk that doesn't wobble, an audio mixer with superior pre-amp, some cameras to replace the webcams I am using, and a small amount of art / audio assets for the game.

Reaching higher levels of funding would allow me to replace the main board camera with a new one that supports uncompressed video, making the chroma-key board cease flickering.

Any money raised beyond that will be used on extra game props, miniatures, tiles, and more art / audio.

What is the business model going forward?

Using a similar model to the traditional streamer model, the Open Game Master will be supported by its player base. Patreon and Twitch subscriptions will be available, as well as donations and Twitch Cheers.

We do not run any sort of advertisement on our streams, and any sponsored content will be noted during the session.

Aside from the costs of running the show, supporter’s money will be used to create more, and better content. Whether it is upgrading cameras and other technology, or buying new tiles and miniatures, I want to make this show the best it can be – which I can only do with your support!

Open and Fair
At no point will players be able to pay for in-game benefits, access to play slots, or other favourable actions. It is important to me that everyone regardless of supporter level has a fair chance to play, and an even playing field once in-game.

Open is one of our core principles, so I want you to be able to leave your stamp on the game world! Our reward tiers offer you the chance to add your flavour right from the start of the game.

What are Kickstarter Play Tokens?

This single-use token will allow you to join any Subscriber exclusive slot. You are still welcome to join any Open game session without spending your token. There may even initially be sessions exclusive for Kickstarter Backers!

What is involved in creating an NPC?

A basic template will be provided for you to fill out as you desire, covering basic things such as name, race, gender, profession, and personality traits. Details such as attributes and hit points are not included on the form, and will be handled by me as the need arises.

Your NPC will be inserted into the world either randomly or carefully placed, and I will do my best to portray your NPC as described. If anything on the template is inappropriate or unclear, I will contact you for revisions before using the NPC.

Ensuring that everyone at the table and watching at home are having fun is important to me, so I have created a simple set of rules and guidelines for viewers, players, and for resolving issues and disputes.

Moderation will initially be performed by me, and as required I will promote viewers to moderator status.

You can take a look at the current ruleset on the main Open Game Master website. These rules are a living document, and will be revised and amended as needed.

Feel free to ask any questions that you may have in the Kickstarter comments, or join the Open Game Master Discord Server and talk to me directly!

There's more information available on the Open Game Master website too!

Initially formed as Raven Productions back in the early 2000's, I have been producing web content for over fifteen years. With a primary focus on video and game content, my aim is to produce content for people to use and enjoy.

If you want to see some of the things Lair of the Raven has produced over the years, check out https://lairoftheraven.uk where you will find links to our other projects, videos, resources, and games.

Risks and challenges

Working from my own resources the majority of the planning, calculating, and scheming has already been completed.

I intend to launch in October, and having the extra funding from the success of this Kickstarter would allow me to invest in better cameras and technology right from the start.
