THANK YOU! Seriously, thank you. Our Kickstarter campaign is over, but you can still get a Quitbit. Visit quitbitlighter.com for more info.
If you can measure it, you can manage it.
You know how much you smoke, but what about when you make small changes? Challenge yourself to fight cravings one by one. Gradually cut back at your own pace or set reduction plans to help you achieve your goals.
Meet Quitbit. It is the world’s first smart lighter with a built-in display that shows you of how many cigarettes you’ve smoked and how long it’s been since your last cigarette. Quitbit also syncs with a mobile app to view smoking history, set reduction plans, and optionally limit how often and when the lighter can be used. It is entirely battery operated can light approximately 100 cigarettes before needing a recharge over USB.
How does the Quitbit Work?
The Quitbit lights cigarettes using a heating element, similar to car lighters. The electronics count each cigarette that is lit. The display on the Quitbit shows details about your smoking habits, like how many cigarettes you’ve smoked and how long it’s been since your last one. We’ve built some smarts into the Quitbit to keep track of only your smoking. Whether you’re just flicking your lighter or sharing it with friends, the Quitbit ensures that accurate data is collected.
Quitting smoking can be a long journey. Keeping track of your progress along the way helps keep you from getting lost. Use the Quitbit system to learn about your habits like never before and celebrate your achievements as you build new ones.
Quitbit can be used alone, but also plays nicely with others.
Know Your Smoking
Learn at what times of the day you’re smoking most and cut out the ones you don’t really need. Discover how long it’s been since your last cigarette and challenge yourself to see how long you can wait.
You can share your progress with Quitbit's community or with your friends on Facebook and Twitter. Leverage the power of social networks to celebrate your progress.
Designing the Experience
As smokers ourselves, we understand the challenges of trying to build new habits. From the start we have focused on smokers. By involving smokers from all backgrounds, we set out to design a product and experience that people would actually use. During that time we went through countless design iterations. We used everything from sketches, CAD renderings, and 3D printing to help us find a form factor and design that was just right.
Where Quitbit Is Now
We've had a lot of help along the way. First we learned from the best at Betaspring, a Providence based startup accelerator, where we refined our concepts, pumped out over 20 Quitbits and launched a beta trial. Ata even managed to quit smoking using the very same prototypes we were testing!
We were then lucky enough to head over to the premier hardware accelerator in the world, Haxlr8r, located in Shenzhen, China. There, we were able to work with an amazing team of manufacturing experts. We went from prototype to final designs, were able to find suppliers and build relationships with manufacturers all before launching on Kickstarter!

The Quitbit team consist of Ata, Kuji, Fred, and Pete. Ata and Kuji had the idea behind Quitbit when Ata was trying to quit smoking last year while studying at Brown University. When smoking before class, Kuji asked Ata how much he smoked that day. When he wasn’t sure they started to track their smoking and became frustrated with the existing ways to learn about their smoking habits. They teamed up with Fred and few months later they had hacked together their first prototypes. Later they also recruited Pete to join the team.
Prior to Quitbit, Kuji and Ata had 10 years of experience developing medical devices and sleep tracking products at Zeo. Fred, who handles the firmware development, worked with Kuji creating the Zeo sleep monitor and has tons of experience developing "bulletproof" code for everything from handheld speech translators to cryogenically-cooled super routers. Pete is our app specialist and has apps live in the app store. Together we have backgrounds in Biomedical Engineering, Electrical & Computer Engineering, Manufacturing, and Chemistry.
We Need Your Help!
We have working prototypes of the Quitbit and have begun small-batch manufacturing. We’re finalizing the electronics and the full version of the mobile application. We need your support to help cover the cost of tooling and prepare for manufacturing. Most of all, we need your support to build a community of people behind Quitbit.
Your Funds Will Go To:
- Create tooling for molded parts
- Finish development of the iOS and Android app
- Create packaging and ship it to your door!
Thank you for supporting Quitbit!
Risks and challenges
Producing consumer electronics is never easy, but we are confident in our abilities to deliver this project on time and with great quality. Our previous experience in manufacturing millions of dollars in sleep tracking devices and accessories makes us prepared for the unforeseen challenges we may encounter when transitioning to large-scale production. We have already manufactured small batches of the lighter, and released an iOS app.
Keep in mind that there are always issues that can arise, such as having to run multiple iterations during the tooling process or being out of key components that delay our schedule.
Despite all of this, we believe we will start shipping the Quitbit to our supporters in December 2014.
We are ready to ramp into production and we need your support!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
