LATE TO THE GAME?
This campaign ended on June 30, 2013. To download your own copy of Quick Key, visit our Website WWW.POWER2TEACH.COM
What does Quick Key do?
Quick Key turns your phone into an optical scanner to grade quizzes, tests, and surveys on paper, up to 30 questions long. Then, Quick Key allows you to run analytics right on your phone, then upload the data to your electronic grade book.

Why is This Kickstarter Campaign Special?
Hi, and thank you so much for visiting our Kickstarter campaign page! My name is Walter Duncan, and I am the co-founder of Design by Educators, Inc. (DBE) and the inventor of Quick Key, the smartphone app for teachers. I’m supposed to tell you our story in this space. But before I do, I want to say a little something about this campaign, because, like all good Kickstarter campaigns, there’s more to it than just finding backers for a cool project.
Ever since our YouTube demo video was picked up by the Reddit community back in late February of this year, teachers have been asking us to do a Kickstarter campaign. And ever since we founded this company nine months ago, we have been searching for a new way to bring real, working teachers into our software design & development process.
We finally realized that Kickstarter is an amazing forum for projects like ours, where the makers want direct input from their backers and end users.
The Quick Key Project puts our end users at the center of the action. Not only can our users help us finish the Quick Key Beta as soon as possible, but we asked them what else Quick Key should be able to do in our recent "Features Survey". They told us their dream features, and now we aim to build those dream features, as many as we can fund in this Kickstarter campaign. In other words, the more backing we get, the more features we can build, and the more powerful the software becomes. Is that beautiful, or what?
I think this is one of the best parts of Kickstarter, and it’s also the best way to make software for professionals in the Information age: with deep involvement from the users at every stage of development. Thank you Kickstarter for taking part in this amazing process!
Why I had to Build Quick Key
As a career teacher, I have used formative assessment as a tool to identify my students’ individual learning needs. Formal, formative assessment has helped me become a better teacher. But there have been times in my career when I have been faced with grading nearly one hundred quizzes a day, five days a week. At one point I was grading 93 exit tickets (short, daily quizzes) by hand every night. Each night, when I was done grading and transcribing the grades into my school’s electronic grade book, I barely had the energy to figure out what all the data meant.
Last summer I had an idea for a smartphone app that could turn the process of grading quizzes and other assessments from an hours-long task into a few simple minutes with my phone. I got a business-minded friend of mine (Isaac D. Van Wesep) to help me, and we started exploring the idea.
And since then Quick Key has just taken off. This campaign is our debut to the world.
THANK YOU TO EVERYBODY WHO HAS BACKED OUR CAMPAIGN!
This project is all about giving teachers the power to teach, and control over their technology. You are helping to make this possible, and your support is going to catalyze so much more!
I encourage you to follow me on Twitter for up-to-the-minute news about Quick Key, and to ask me any questions you have, at @4_teachers. I will also be talking to Quick Key backers at the Quick Key Facebook Page.

Risks and challenges
Bringing a new software application to market, and supporting its users long-term, is far from straightforward. It’s too complicated for a career teacher like me to do on his or her own. In the Project Description, I mentioned my business partner and some of the other people who have joined our team since we founded the company behind Quick Key, back in August 2012.
Our company, Design by Educators, Inc. (DBE), was formed to address all of the risks and challenges that go along with bringing Quick Key to users. Having a “real” company standing behind Quick Key means your investment in backing our project will pay dividends for years to come.
We now have three seasoned technology professionals on our Advisory Board, legal counsel to guide and codify our strategy, a dedicated team of mobile software developers, a user experience (UX) designer, a Web developer, 34 years of combined K-12 experience on our three-person executive team, a family of investors who stand behind our work, and our most important people: the community of educators who are helping us make Quick Key the most powerful tool ever for teachers.
