Longevity is a photo exploration into love by photographing and interviewing couples that have been together for more than 30 years.
LONGEVITY is a photography project that has commenced since 2010 and has been included in the celebration of The United Nations International Day of Older Persons (solo exhibition) as well as been included in group exhibitions at Mpls Photo Center (Minneapolis, Minnesota) and Ferencvarosi Gallery (Budapest, Hungary).
The whole premise of LONGEVITY is to explore the uniquely personal narratives of couples that have been together for more than 30 years through photography and answers from a 20 question questionnaire about their perceptions of love and relationships which I have conceived and drafted.
The major goal of LONGEVITY is to travel all over the world to photograph and interview couples: England, Germany, France, Turkey, Japan, China, Chile, Brazil, New Zealand, Mexico, Italy, Greece, Morocco, Egypt, South Africa, The Netherlands, Spain, India, and so on. Through my travels, I would love to contrast and compare how each society views and maintains their relationship and what are their methodologies for maintaining such an enduring love beyond the 30 year mark.
For the past two years I have been trying launch LONGEVITY internationally by applying to art residences and grants. One by one, I have been turned down. But, I am not giving up.
On August 11th, I am flying out to California to shoot about 5 to 7 couples for LONGEVITY. This trip is crucial for creating new photographs for a $ 30,000 fellowship that is due in November for all the couples I am shooting, for the first time, are multicultural and will strengthen the overall visual message of LONGEVITY.
In order to make my trip affordable, I booked a one way ticket from New York to San Francisco using some frequent flyer miles that I had. This still leaves me with a return ticket home not yet purchased, which, at the moment I can't afford. I did some research and I found a return ticket around $250.00 (plus tax and fees). The funds that are donated towards this element of LONGEVITY (my travel) will allow me to focus on getting my photographs and not to worry about how I will be able to get back home!
Any surplus funds that are donated to LONGEVITY will be used towards film (120 Medium Format for my Seagull Twin Lens Reflex), film processing, administrative duties (printing of questionnaires), prints for the couples, and postage for prints.
I believe in the potential of this project, the potential to go all over the world and create a strong visual and written outlet for couples who have incredible stories to tell. I want to show the world through the results of LONGEVITY that love is not elusive or temporary, but that love has the steadfast capacity to build a foundation through time and patience.
