Fresco is Celebrating Its 10 Year Anniversary!
That is nothing compared to the great Frescoes of the Renaissance that are 500 years old, but still something to be proud of. Fresco, which celebrates the great history of Italian art, has become one of Queen Games' most successful products, garnering several international awards, including the Game of the Year in Germany (awarded each year at the Spiel Fair).
In honor of this anniversary, we are releasing a number of new Fresco products, including a new expansion (containing four new modules), a combined box with a Card and Dice version of Fresco, and a new Fresco MegaBox.
New Fresco Products
All products in this campaign will come standard in English, with German or French rules included if shipping to an appropriate country. There is no need to select a language with your pledge.
Fresco Expansion 3: For those who already own our previously released Big Box, or who own just the base game, the new expansion modules are being packaged together as a new expansion, with artwork that is congruent with previous releases. This product can be combined with the Card and Dice Game (below).
Fresco: The Card & Dice Game: Two new smaller games based on the gameplay of Fresco, and combined here in a special box with both games. While it is possible that each game would get a separate print run in the future, it would not be until after this campaign fulfills.
Fresco MegaBox (Gold & Diamond Edition): For those looking to get everything released for Fresco, including all of the new and old expansion modules, with all new artwork on the box and game components, plus a specially designed double layer insert, there is the Gold Edition. This "MegaBox" includes everything released for Fresco, plus the new Card and Dice Game.
Finally, for those looking for a premium experience with upgraded components, there is the Diamond Edition. This edition will come with acrylic Fresco and Paint tiles, and through a number of stretch goals, we hope to upgrade a number of other components for the ultimate Fresco experience.
Please see our content picture to see all the component upgrades in the Diamond Edition.
Pledging for This Campaign
Please note that we do not use a pledge manager. You will need to pledge for what you want during the course of the campaign. To see shipping costs to your country, please click on the pledge level you are interested in.
The MegaBox will be reserved for direct sales from Queen Games only, including this campaign, and if copies are left over from conventions and possibly our webstore. We do our best to deliver to Kickstarter backers first before any other channel, and to give backers the most competitive price possible.
The Card and Dice games are not currently released as stand-alone products. They most likely will be in the future, but pledging in this campaign will allow you to receive them first.
New Content Bundle
Our previously released Fresco Big Box included the Base game and 10 expansion modules (which were also released separately). To accommodate those who already own these, we are also offering a limited print run Fresco bundle, that contains the 4 new expansion modules, as well as the Card and Dice Game, all in an art style that is consistent with the original Big Box.
Please note that these boxes do not contain acrylic tiles, these are only available in the Mega Box Diamond Edition.
The New Expansions
The wealthy Damsels of the city might just be interested in supporting a struggling artist like yourself.
In this module, players receive an extra player board that allows for special actions. Two tiles can be switched in the market, a fresco tile can be reserved in the Cathedral, more coins can be earned in the studio, colors can be exchanged in the workshop, and in the Theater the mood can be lifted even further.
Catacombs have been found under the cathedral. What treasures await, what mysteries to uncover?!
This module changes the Hostel, Cathedral, and the Planning phase. The catacomb tiles are first placed face down in the cathedral and the fresco tiles are placed on top of them. Players can now purchase cartographer tiles in the hostel, which show locations in the cathedral that have to be painted in order to gain access to the catacomb tiles below. A catacomb tile can be sold for coins or kept till the end of the game, in which case the bishop awards extra victory points to the players.
The Dome will be the crowning achievement of the cathedral, but it can only be painted once the main Fresco has been finished.
The dome tiles are shuffled and placed on the nine central fresco spaces, before the fresco tiles are placed on top. When a player finishes a fresco tile, they take the dome tile underneath and places it in front of them. A dome tile shows a combination of two colors that the player needs to gain the depicted victory points. However, these tiles can only be painted at the end of the game, after the fresco in the cathedral is finished. So good planning and timing will be needed in order to keep the necessary paint cubes to finish the dome at the end of the game.
The Church Pews:
The work never stops when you work in a big cathedral. Now the bishop needs the pews to be restored for more visitors to come.
This module changes the market action and the planning phase. The chapel board is placed next to the game board and every player takes six wooden planks and places them in front of their screen. New market tiles will allow the players to purchase these when they visit the market. In the planning phase players may place their assistants on the new action tiles to use their collected wood to build pews for the church and collect some extra points.
Special Acrylic Components
For the Mega Box Diamond Edition, we are upgrading components to acrylic. The Fresco pieces will be partially transparent (with the paint requirements and points printed on the otherwise clear tile), allowing you to see the Fresco underneath. The acrylic tiles are durable and scratch resistant, and provide a unique look and tactile feel to the game.
The color tokens, previously cubes, have also been upgraded to acrylic.
Note: The shape and symbols on the containers have been designed to be color-blind friendly.
These upgrades will in the Diamond Edition of the MegaBox, and even more upgrades will be unloacked through our stretch goals!
Fresco - The Card Game
Fresco: The Card Game takes the core game play of Fresco and distills it into a smaller, faster playing design.
The Bishop has specific wishes when it comes to the new fresco that should brighten up the cathedral. He has very particular instructions about what should be painted in specific places. Players will take on the role of painters attempting to paint the new fresco according to his instruction, receiving points in the game for painting the Fresco and bonus points for fulfilling the Bishops' requests.
During the game players draw color cards which they will use to paint sections of the fresco. Color cards can be gained from the market, which holds the three basic colors, or from the workshop, which contains the mixed color palette. When players have enough colors they can paint a section of the fresco and gain points. Play the right combination of cards, and you will extra points.
When all sections of the fresco are painted, players total up their points and who has the most points is the winner of the game.
Fresco - The Dice Game
Roll and combine the right combination of dice to gain fresco tiles and be the first to complete your fresco!
The goal of the game is to complete the five different tiles to form a complete fresco. In order to complete a fresco tile players have to roll a result that matches the number next to each fresco tile.
On their turn, players roll the dice exactly three times, on each roll setting one die aside. After the three rolls, the pips on the three set aside dice are added together, which allows the player to collect the corresponding tile. If the result does not match a fresco tile number, they gain a portrait token which will grant bonuses or points. The two color dice can be used to double the number on the corresponding colored die, making it easier to reach the higher numbers.
Before a turn players can place the bishop on one of the five fresco tile spaces, earning extra points if they manage to roll that exact number. Other players can bet on whether the player is successful or not, and will earn some extra points if they guess correctly. At the end of the game, players count the points on their fresco and portrait tiles, and whomever has the most points is the winner of the game.
Fresco - Base Game
Fresco is one of those rare games that from the moment you sit down to play, you can truly get immersed in the theme and really feel the game come alive. There is a wonderful satisfaction of successfully managing your apprentices, acquiring your necessary resources, and then finally blending and applying paints to watch the beautiful Fresco come back to life in all its vibrant magnificence. This is an engaging game for families and gamers that has been recognized with over 15 major award nominations and wins worldwide, including a nomination for the Spiel de Jahres (German Board Game of the Year) and the winner of the Deutscher Spiel Preis.
In Fresco, you take the role of a master painter. By order of the bishop, you have been commissioned to restore a large fresco painting on the cathedral's ceiling. But not surprisingly, you are not the only master commissioned for the project.
You will need to carefully plan your workday: when to wake the apprentices, what stalls to visit, which paints to buy, which tiles to paint, and when it is appropriate to make a generous donation to the bishop. Buying materials costs money, so be prepared to take on additional projects to earn money to acquire the paints and materials necessary for completing your tasks; but your apprentices are not automatons, you need to keep them happy too. An evening at the theater can go a long way toward keeping your apprentices happy. By managing your decisions carefully and planning ahead, you can become one of the masters of the ages. The decisions you make in Fresco are all wonderfully woven into the theme of managing the challenging undertaking of restoring a Renaissance masterpiece!
