Igniting Queen City Clay

$27,200

Queen City Clay wants to give you an art experience. We have no agenda and no hidden plans for your future at the shop. We simply know that when we get clay in someone’s hands and give them the tools to succeed, they change. People gain confidence, find purpose, get creative, and find community.

Our studio has grown to be one of the largest clay education centers in the country. Our growth has happened quickly and our educational offerings have expanded to encompass all levels of wheel throwing, hand building, and sculpture. We want to be the perfect home for beginners and professionals alike.

Through field trips and special events, we currently get clay into the hands of over 2,500 adults and children every year. This level of traffic is amazing for our mission, but disastrous to our energy and water usage. We want to be a leader in clay education and conservation in the arts. This is where we need your help.

In addition to classes, studio rental, and ceramic supply shop, we also make a low-fire white clay body in house.
In addition to classes, studio rental, and ceramic supply shop, we also make a low-fire white clay body in house.

With the addition of a new energy efficient BLAAUW gas kiln, our studio can continue to offer firings at our current rates, avoiding an increase in fees for our students and members. Gas and energy prices are rising, and arts funding is being cut all over the country. We need to remain an available and affordable resource to those who want, and need art experiences.

Teachers and students from all districts can continue participating in our programs if we keep field trip and firing costs at their current levels. This helps ensure that our diverse community can continue to grow. We want to freeze costs for these experiences and the firings that go along with them for the next decade.

Studio Member SKT Ceramics fires her porcelain wares in our current gas kiln at ^10 reduction. The new kiln could take her turnaround time from 3 days to 24 hours.

Margins in the clay business are small but we have an amazing group of volunteers and local support who will put months of labor into these projects if we can get the funding to make them happen.

We are looking to raise $25,000 to get this project under way. We would love to surpass this goal, as our total costs for the project will likely be triple this amount, but we know we have to be realistic. We'll take a loan for the rest of the funding we need, but loans are not free. Borrowing money will keep us from expanding the studio as quickly as we need to, but we can make it work.

Queen City Clay is a place where people can rediscover their own importance in the creative community. In this space shared ideas and skills help keep the community inspired and relevant. Younger people come to learn a skill, a trade, an art form too valuable to lose. Through this, people become problem solvers. They also get contact with people from all ages and background. In a world reliant on technology, we're giving people a space to physically create and relate to others.

We want to be here for the long haul. We have to ensure this space is an inviting environment where people can explore their ideas and try something new, without judgement.

The Queen City Clay team is always dedicated to improving our studio and our community. We work hard, but we genuinely love our jobs and we love this studio. For staff and students alike, this place is our home. If you live in the Cincinnati area (or you're visiting!), please stop by and say hello. We'd love to show you around!

Thank you for checking out our Kickstarter, we appreciate it more than you know!

Risks and challenges

- These kilns are custom built in Canada so, in addition to shipping costs, we also will need to cover import taxes and an international customs broker. Luckily, these are only issues as far as funding is concerned; BLAAUW has incredible customer service to assist and assure we have everything covered from the beginning.

- We'll need to remove our 25-year old gas kiln to make way for our new energy efficient kiln, but we have experienced staff and volunteers willing to help with this process. It will be an extensive amount of work but our dedicated, hard-working community is up for the challenge.
