ABOUT QUAHOG CORNER
Quahog Corner is a new children's show that is wrapped in an App.
It is an App-Show™
What is an App-Show™?
We all have a lot of great content on our tablets and mobile devices and it tends to be well-organized. Videos are available in the video player. Games are usually standalone apps. Music is in the music player. Compartmentalizing content this way is practical and it makes sense.
But something special happens when video, music, and interactivity are combined seamlessly. We want you to experience Quahog Corner the way we imagine it - like a world that becomes one of your favorite places to visit. Once you are there you can catch up on the latest stories with Captain Salty, hear the Mermaid's latest song and then perfect your aim in the Cook-the-Crab game - all without having to pop back into the real world. And if Gerti the Gull happens to fly across your screen while you are working on a drawing lesson - hey, that is just what you'd expect in Quahog Corner.
We are: John Sullivan (animator/illustrator) and Andrew Rapo (composer/programmer), two long-time collaborators with a long history of making fun, family-friendly entertainment.
Almost exactly one year ago, we began began developing characters, stories and songs inspired by the simple beauty and appealing nature of the place where we live - Cape Cod. Cape Cod is our home, but we’ve both traveled far and wide to pursue our interests in animation, film, music and games.
John spent thirty years as an art teacher at Barnstable High School where he was the director of the award-winning Barnstable High School Drama Club. John has a masters degree in teaching from Massachusetts College of Art and studied at the California Institute for the Arts (Cal Arts). While in California he worked on the Turner Pictures animated feature, The Pagemaster.
Andrew began composing original music as a student at John’s Barnstable Summer Family Theater on Cape Cod. Andrew spent many years developing games and interactive content at Disney Online Studios in Los Angeles. He was nominated for a Technical Emmy® in 2007 for his work on Disney's innovative DXD site which seamlessly integrated video, games and chat. He went on to be Executive Producer of The World of Cars Online, a game for kids based on the Pixar movie. He also worked closely with the founders of Club Penguin. On returning to New England in 2010, Andrew joined Hasbro’s Digital Marketing team as Vice President of Product Management & Platform Operations before co-founding Quahog Entertainment.
Developing the App
In addition to producing the stories, animation and music, we are also developing the app ourselves. Andrew is an experienced app developer and game programmer. We have working prototypes with functional drawing/coloring activities, gameplay, animation and audio.
Andrew has developed in Objective C for iOS but this app is authored using Flash (Actionscript) and packaged as a Air app so that it can be simultaneously deployed on iOS and Android.
The app will be free with a core set of features and content that will be available to anyone. A premium QuahogCorner.com account will unlock the Season 1 content.
The Project's History (So Far)
In early 2012 we decided it was time to combine our talents and take on a new challenge. We knew the time was right to make innovative content for tablet devices, and we had both been developing Cape-Cod-inspired concepts. By June, Quahog Corner had a growing cast of characters and a theme song. We could tell we were onto something and every time we showed our progress to friends and colleagues the response was energizing. By fall, Professor Ticonderoga had emerged as a new favorite character and his theme song was received with rave reviews.
We spent the winter and spring refining our concept and polishing our Kickstarter plan (and video). Now we are ready to reveal Quahog Corner to the world. We can honestly say that the project revealed in our Kickstarter video is the best reflection of our work and our vision that we have ever put together. We are proud of it and we hope you find it as appealing and exciting (and promising) as we do.
What is a "Season" of Content?
Excellent question. Because Quahog Corner is an App-Show™, a season will include full-length (22-minute) video episodes plus songs, music videos, drawing lessons, drawing activities, interactive storybooks, games, and more.
Season 1 will include:
- 2 full length episodes of The Quahog Corner Show
- 1 Professor Ticonderoga Adventure (~6-minutes)
- 4 Standalone drawing Lessons (~10-15 minutes each)
- 1 Game with at least 3 levels - Cook the Crab
- 2 Standalone music Videos (2-3 Minutes)
- 1 Interactive Coloring Activity
- 12 Interactive Coloring Pages
- 1 Interactive Storybook/Comic - i.e. Crabby's Bad Day
- The debut of the Magic Aquarium
- 12 Animated fish/creatures/objects for your personal Magic Aquarium
If we are successful with Season 1, Seasons 2, 3, 4, … will have a comparable volume of fresh, new content
What is the Magic Aquarium?
The Magic Aquarium is a virtual aquarium that you can populate with sea creatures and objects you find, unlock, collect, (maybe create). Think of it as an aquatic trophy case.

The Quahog Corner Show (Full-length Episodes)
These full-length (~22-minute) episodes are where all the various story lines and characters come together. Captain Salty, the host of the show, has traveled far and wide and has tales of his adventures that will amaze you. Many of his friends love to visit him at Quahog Corner. When they do, he will let you know so you can meet them, too. Professor Ticonderoga and Dave (The Maestro) make regular appearances. Each episode features a new story-line, at least one new song and culminates in a story-specific drawing lesson with Professor Ticonderoga.
Professor Ticonderoga Adventures
Professor Ticonderoga is an old friend of Captain Salty. As you can tell from his Victorian charm (and outfit) he's from another time. Thanks to his Magnificent Machine, Ticonderoga is not constrained to the present or even to planet Earth. He is the quintessential artist and uses his drawing skills to design fantastic gear as well as to document all of his amazing adventures. He can draw anything and can unlock your own artistic genius.
Drawing Lessons - Learn to Draw 'Em All!!!
Professor Ticonderoga's system for teaching you how to draw is pure genius. He'll start you off with a simple Level 1 challenge (say a Quahog character) and once you've mastered that, and once he's certified your work, he will promote you to Level 2. In no time you'll be drawing Level 10 Mermaids and Dinosaurs. Once you learn to draw all the characters in Professor Ticonderoga's lessons you will be ready to design your own!
Some stories are the most fun when you read them. Take Crabby's Bad Day, for example. This comic is filled with funny punchlines about Crabby and his many hilarious misfortunes. And of course, Crabby will act out some of the hi-lights.
** ADDITIONAL CONTENT IDEAS **
If we exceed our funding goal, we have plenty of other content ideas. Some of our favorites include:
Cooking with Constance
Learn how to make traditional seafood specialties with Captain Salty's gourmet wife, Constance.
A Max and the Mechanic's Minute
Peer into Professor Ticonderoga's machine shop and hear his lead engineer, Max, explain his way out of another mechanical mishap.
A Musical Maestro Moment
Learn about music from the Maestro - the Magical Metaphysical Miniature Miracle Maestro, to be exact. But you can call him Dave. Dave loves to share his musical expertise with aspiring songwriters and performers. And you'll be thrilled by Dave's musical guests. He knows everybody.
Chilling Stories from Davey Jones' Locker
Join Red Beard the Russian Pirate (if you dare) for retellings of some of his favorite - and most chilling - ghost stories.
Raging Scallop - In Concert
Enjoy the latest music videos from Quahog Corner's resident maritime punk (high-school) trio.
We have done a ton of work over the last twelve months but we realize it is just the beginning of what needs to be done to make Quahog Corner a success. And we know we will need lots of help. We have been inspired and encouraged by the way the Kickstarter community has embraced and supported creative projects. And through the various projects we have funded, we know how rewarding it is to help make someone else’s project a reality. Please Help Us Spread the Word
Quahog Corner is designed specifically for kids (and parents of kids) so it won’t appeal to everyone. But even if it is not for you, you may know someone who would like it. In that case, we will appreciate help spreading the word.
Learn With Us
It is also worth pointing out that to make Quahog Corner we are using some really cool tools and techniques to produce the video effects and to program the app for iOS and Android devices. We believe in sharing as much of our craft and technology as we can, so you may find that Quahog Corner’s behind-the-scenes content and how-to videos will be a great way to discover tools and techniques that you can use for your own projects. All rewards for contributions of $25 or more will include all the behind-the-scenes and how-to content that we can produce.
We Value Your Input
Finally, we know we can make Quahog Corner great. But we we can make it greater with your help; not just with your contributions but with your input and feedback. When you support our project we will invite you to become part of the community that will make Quahog Corner more fun than we could ever make it by ourselves.
So come with us to Quahog Corner!
Risks and challenges
We know we have the skills and tools to realize our vision for Quahog Corner. And since we have done so much work already, we are confident that with a successful Kickstarter campaign we will be able to deliver a high-quality app with the content described in our goals.
Because we are building and delivering a digital product, we do not face difficult inventory and manufacturing challenges. But, the app will rely on an account system to grant access to the content and (if we are as successful as we would like to be) we may have a sizable account database to manage. Also, the regulations governing online privacy are in flux and we will spend significant effort making sure that we comply. Fortunately we have good experience in these areas.
And in order to work with the best talent we expect to establish a contract with the Screen Actors Guild. This is new territory for us and it will introduce some new complexities and expenses. But we believe it will also help us develop important relationships and ultimately deliver the best product.
If we fall short of our funding goal, it will be very hard for us to complete even a basic version of the product. (But even in that case we will do our best to make it work)Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
