We were surprised when Governor Jerry Brown mandated a 25 percent statewide water reduction (PBS NewsHour, April 1, 2015). We knew that water levels in our reservoirs were low and that everybody needed to cut back, but reducing water use by one-fourth was a major statement and a warning to all Californians.
Being a small startup in Berkeley, California, we immediately started sketching designs and documenting our initial ideas . . . and knew we were onto something!
Not only was it possible to create a device that gently reminded people (without being annoying) to save water, we also knew we could bring it to market quickly.
And we didn’t want to create just another piece of low-flow plumbing hardware—we wanted to SHAPE WATER-SAVING BEHAVIOR!
The Drop is an easy to use water saving device. Simply pop the Drop onto your faucet, and start saving water! It's really that easy!
The Drop’s influence extends beyond faucets: The Drop encourages adults and children to modify their behavior.
Drop users become aware of their water use and then turn off the faucet to save water when the Drop is not even there!
On average, each American uses 80 to 100 gallons of water inside their home each and every day! Think about that for just a second!
Sink faucets generally account for 15 to 20 percent of indoor use. According to the East Bay Municipal Utility District, our local water utility and one of the largest water districts in the San Francisco Bay Area, indoor water consumption breaks down this way:
Simply put --> Far too much fresh water runs down the drain without ever being touched or used in any way.
Below is an illustration representing what your savings might look like (conservatively, in our opinion) if you always turned off the faucet when brushing your teeth, washing your face and hands, shaving, preparing food, and washing dishes.
If each home in California conserved 10,000 gallons a year (a mere 833 gallons per month) . . .
We know you will learn fast, and when you do... CONSIDER SHARING THE DROP with a neighbor, a friend, or bring it to your workplace, and everyone can begin saving!
After studying home water-use habits, we realized there was an enormous opportunity to save water by reducing the amount of water running straight down the drain.
After less than a month of prototyping, we were testing our initial Drop prototypes in the homes of our friends and families. The results were analyzed, and . . .
To be honest though — everyone wastes water — primarily:
Qonserve Technologies wants to make it easier for everybody to reduce.
Just a bit more awareness about how we use water during our daily activities can make a huge difference in overall consumption—and that is precisely what the Drop can do for you!
Why do we need your help?
Prototyping small devices can often be done with relatively low initial capital. However, producing thousands of production-quality units (even better looking than the prototypes we show above) is a different story [often] requiring a significantly larger investment of time, energy, and money.
Although scaling up production will become more cost effective with higher unit volume, the upfront costs associated with manufacturing a new device can be daunting and even impossible to absorb without some help.
This is where YOU, the Kickstarter community, comes in.
We are ready and excited to make this dream a reality, but we need your pledge of support!
We have already:
Sourced all Drop components
Met with manufacturing partners
Accounted and budgeted for initial capital costs
Prepared contracts and agreements
. . . and we are prepared to go!!
Please support our goals of raising water-use awareness and creating positive change now.
A Fully Functioning Drop, of course.
Drop T-shirt - We know you'll like them.
Sticker: Thank you very much! (other designs may follow)
3D printed Drops: We're proud of our little prototypes!
Visit to the lab: Only for a select few of the most giving individuals!
With some luck we are hoping to provide you with some additional rewards. Stay tuned to the Drop campaign to find out what comes next...

Risks and challenges
As with any new product, there are occasionally unexpected hiccups that can affect the actual delivery schedule.
Our primary risk is associated with our ability to forecast the size and quantity of specialty tools (primarily injection molds) that will be needed to produce the number of rewards (fully functional Drops) according to our Timeline. If we only need to make a few thousand units, then a single mold (which costs less) is likely sufficient. However, if we need to produce significantly more units, and need to deliver them in January 2016, then we will need to increase our production capacity and efficiency. The sooner we have a reasonable idea of the number of Drops we need to manufacture, the more reliable our estimated timeline for production and delivery becomes.
One of our challenges with Drop manufacturing is to be able to accommodate the vast number of different faucet designs we wish to connect the Drop to. Current designs allow for rapid attachment to a majority of standard faucets. Certainly an ongoing challenge in terms of Drop manufacturing is to continue to expand the number of faucets it will work with. We are advancing quickly, and with your support, we can continue to expand the Drop's capabilities.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
